I need advice.

I blew out my right hip flexors about 1 month ago.  I have been doing PT 2x/week.  Progress is slow and I am not able to run train yet.  I tried running just to test yesterday and made it just under a mile before the pain got to a 5 of 10.  I have felt the hip ever since the run.  It is tender and inflamed again just from that short distance. I have to accept, I think, that the marathon will not happen.  I haven't crunched the numbers to see what pace I will need to finish and if I can walk it.  I was considering dropping to the 10k but I would still have to walk most of that too at the rate I am progressing.  I already have my plane ticket.  Not doing anything seems torturous especially with the hotel and flight investment.

Do I walk the marathon? Do I walk the 10k?  Do I watch it all from the sidelines?  What would a manatee do?????

So sorry to hear about your injury Since you already have sunk costs, going to the race is a must, but i don't think walking a marathon would be fun -even if you can do it in time, plus it might hurt you further.  So, go ahead and walk the 10K and have a great time.

So taking manatee advice to heart, I looked at 10k training plans.  Hal Higdon plans are 8 weeks.  It seems like everything is falling in place for the 10k!!!   I might be a little excited again!!   I can switch my registration to the 10k with no cost or pay a price to defer my marathon registration to 2014 and then separately pay the registration for the 10k.  I am not sure what to do yet but the 10k seems like the way to go!  That takes a lot of pressure off and maybe now I will have the patience to let my body actually heal.

Love you Manatees!!!  YOU ROCK!!  You give me the courage to make smart decisions!

Good day all, I hope the weekend treated you well. A few things from this weekend:
Chad - I hope that your race went well and that your friend is doing the best that she possibly can. It sounds like she is at peace with where she is, and that is a pretty awesome gift for any of us.
Yanti - I am blown away by the depth and love of those on your life. Your friends seem like some pretty special people and you are blessed to have them. How much longer until you are in Japan? Are they prepared for what's coming?
Jo - I hope that you are coming to terms with your hip issue and what you will do, it certainly looks that way. I had no idea that you were in that much pain. I am so sorry for that, but on the other hand, it looks like your outlook is really in a good place. I think that no matter how you end up racing it, you will have a stellar race weekend.
Stacey - It may soon be time for a new couch! That is a whole lot of dog on there.
Randee - It looks like your race really wiped you out. You mentioned getting a physical, please make sure you mention the way you felt after your race. It is probably nothing, but you may not want to take a chance.
Erin - That backpack is awesome. I hope that ya'll enjoy it and we see more of those smiles.
Enjoy today for it truly is the best present we may have!

Hey everyone. Long lost manatee here. I'm back at work, with extra duties; classes started last Wednesday; I had out-patient surgery last Tuesday; all three kids are back at their schools (finally); hubby is still jet setting around the country teaching stuff to people. My house is a disaster. My training since surgery is in the toilet. My arms look like I got into a serious bar brawl . . . and lost. And now my wounds are itching like crazy.

So no swimming for a while.

Absolutely no biking outside, but I may try to get on the spin bike at the gym, without going into aero.

I ran last night for the first time since surgery. I was so afraid I would fall and mess up my arms even more, but I managed to keep on my feet. I had a couple deep lypomas on the underside of my upper left arm, and those spots are giving me a bit of trouble. They hurt while running, and it's difficult to stretch to reach things. The bruising there is particularly alarming.

But at least the most obvious lypomas are gone. My family claims they never noticed them. Whatever.

I made the local paper (not because of my lypoma issues), but I can't get the picture to paste, so you'll just have to take my word for it. :-)

I'm on drugs for my menopause symptoms. Hooray.

I think that gets everyone up to date. I will try to be a better pod mate.

Regarding Starbucks recycling, we have barrels that are always full, never properly sorted and seem to be kind of an afterthought.  I suspect a management issue -- local management doesn't care so it's not handled.

I agree with Salty that the way to be sustainable is to bring your own cup.  I do that if I am having regular coffee but not if I'm getting an espresso drink.

These photos were taken in Raleigh but I've seen the same thing in Cary and other local stores.

[... hours ahead of me. We will be running at the same time, by my calculations.

OK, I can't format, but I have 13 hour difference.

Completely agree!

My husband and I started and run a non-profit that is dedicated to teaching sustainability and systems thinking to children.  We do this primarily by taking kids to natural environments, local farms, and some businesses (biodiesel cooperative, local food coop, landfill, water treatment facility) and using teachable moments to encourage this kind of thinking.  It's kind of a two pronged approach--let kids have supervised, unstructured play in lots of different natural environments so they develop a love for nature, and teach them how to think critically and make choices about protecting and caring for the natural environment.  I absolutely do the things that Salty mentioned and for me it's just an extension of the choices I make everyday.  However, for many it is not so automaticand integrated, and it seems that because Starbucks places value in sustainability practices, having recycling available at stores should be a given.

Today well what can I say - I took Terenzo (my Trek) for a ride, we rode 80km.  stopped at around 50km for breakfast with the girls then rode more.  Great day for it, overcast but not cold and not windy.

I am so damn proud of myself!

DH went to SoCal for a motocross race with his friends. So I have today with just me n the kiddos. I planned on getting a good swim in this morning. Pulled up to the gym and saw there were three open lanes. Dropped off kids at daycare and changed...5-10min tops. Walked into pool aaaaaand no open lanes and two already doubled. Doh!  I sat down at the end and played with my phone for a few minutes, debating what I wanted to do. Probably just a new swimmer thing, but I always feel like I'm intruding to ask a stranger to lane share. The only person who was actually swimming (two girls were floating around, one lady walking, two men talking/floating) stopped and cheerfully offered to share her lane. We swam without incident for 20-30min and then two lanes opened and I took one. She was not swimming fast, but she was killing the endurance!!! Started before I got in and was still swimming when I left. I didn't want to bother her, so I wrote her a thank you note and left it on her towel.

I was pretty happy with this swim. Ok, I was really, really happy with it Laughing Gave me a bit of a boost I've been needing. 1950m in just under an hour. Don't think I've had a swim that far for months. Best part is I could've gone longer, but daycare was closing.

Here's a pic of Mak in her new Kelty backpack. She's so excited to try it out for real. Every time she sees it she says, "I want to go hiking with dad!"

Erin, I love, love, love that you left your lane mate a thank you note.  How sweet are you?  Nice swim too, btw.

The Kelty backpack survived everyday use with all three of our kids.  It is the ABSOLUTE single best investment we made in terms of cost per use items for our kids.  Actually, we didn't even buy it, but I know how much they are, and I'm telling you that bad boy got into the pennies per use column.  We still have ours, and though it looks pretty gross, it would make it through a couple more kids if anyone finds themselves in need of one

We look for quality kids' things on Craigslist. $70 for this barely used one! Hard to pay full price for anything you don't have to have brand new. Kids grow too fast.

Reading through the past few pages and it's getting super dusty in here.  No idea why my allergies are acting up so bad.

Skrat, I hope R4HG day went well.  She sounds like an amazing person.

Yanti, lots of love for Chris and the rest of Paige's family. The picture of her is gorgeous.
