I don't have much to do for a couple of weeks so I signed up for a Red Cross lifeguarding course.   This afternoon was the pre-test and consisted of a 300 yard swim, a two minute treading water with legs only and a 20 yard swim and dive for a 10 lb weight  and return 20 yards with it.

Let's just say the teenagers were in awe of me.

The things we do when we are bored.....    Cool

Ok if you are that bored do you want to write my paper for me? The topic is "accounting profit is the best measure of success." You need to comment on this and explore other measures.

by the way I need a HD mark because the lecturer is my old boss and he will mark me hard

if that one doesn't spin your wheels I have at least 5 more that you can choose from that are due before the start of July.

Accounting is the redheaded step child of mathematics.  I won't touch that subject with a ten foot pole.   Please elaborate on the other five choices.

LMAO

(I feel that way about swimming but Yanti gets mad when I say that)

How does swimming relate to mathematics in that fashion?

Other than they are both of the scientific world I"m not sure.

so these are what you have:

1. Leading when you aren't the leader (3,000 words) this one is due today I have nearly finished only about 1,000 to go.

2. Something about the difference between leadership and management and if this is a useful distinction and should organisations prioritise one over the other (1,500 words) due Monday.

3. Something on evaluating the concept of "servant leadership" (2,500 words) due next Friday.

4. Describe the structure and design of your organisation, describe the methods of your organisation, and what is your assessment of the satisfaction levels of workers within your organisation (2,500 words) due July 1.

5. Something on legal issues within education but I don't have the details of that one yet (2,500 words) due July 1.

so any takers? I could send pop tarts I think we can get them here in Oz.

rrrunner - 2013-05-10 9:53 AMHey now! My degree is in accounting!

Oh mine too. But for some reason the uni that I am doing my masters at didn't give me any credit for the accounting unit so they can't stop me from taking it.

initially they wanted me to do a double unit project (10,000 words) on the effect of corporate governance on leadership (which is boring even by accounting standards) but I managed to convince them to let me do the law and accounting units instead (well actually I just said I wasn't doing it and as you can grad doing all course work and no project they couldn't make me).

It doesn't relate to mathematics, it's your apparent dislike for accounting and my known aversion for swimming that relate.

Oxymoron.    My  concentration in math and in English is optimization theory.  That translate in lay terms as getting the most bang for the bucks.

Sorry but I'm signing off as my introversion has reared it's ugly head.

Tootles, all.

Aaaand just because I can't stop posting about myself ... well, okay, none of these things have to do with me directly. (One of them tangentially).

I know I keep saying how awesome and incredible it is that endurance sport and multisport have just TAKEN OFF here in the last 4 years, but it's just been amazing and dizzying to be part of it from the ground up. These are from the inflight magazine of our national airline (Garuda, in case anyone is a trivia buff) ... so cool. I mean, think about how relatively popular cycling and triathlon are in the U.S. and whether two such events would be featured in the magazine of a major carrier.

My sister is organizing something like a Tour de Bali, a multi-stage charity cycling challenge around the island. Unfortunately, it's the frickin' WEEKEND BEFORE Ironman Japan (which is on Aug 31)!

The beautiful building is the private-club restaurant at the St. Regis resort that it seems tradition for me to go to before Ironmans for their 50-course Sunday brunch (I've never managed more than 40, though). I have a date with my brother and sister to go there on Aug. 18 to get me out of depression taper, motivated to go race, and send me off well.

That's awesome! What? You can't HTFU and just use it as a warm up for IMJPAN. Ahhh I love Japan. Yokohama and Tokyo are probably my favorite cities I have ever been to.

Additionally, when I come visit let's have an eat off. I think I can at least get to 41

I have an advantage. Included are free-flow cocktails. I don't need cocktails.

Pshhhh, I've already learned that in the case of an eat off, I don't either. Actually it's pretty rare that I drink cocktails anyhoo. Member I'm a beer girl. That other stuff makes weird stuff happen, usually including misplaced clothing

You too, huh?

Well, I guess I'm going to have to insist on cocktails for you then.

I'll have the syrupy mocktails. Oddly enough they still have the same effect on me, though.

Sweet, HFCS gets your clothes off? That's so perfect. I'll drink a cocktail to that.

Well do I need alcohol to get my clothes off.....prolly not.Embarassed

The power of words.

**********

        Four Years Gone

Again this night
I awake to find
my dad walking the halls
going from
room to room
searching for his wife
who is four years gone.

I tell him once
denial
I tell him twice
confusion
I tell him thrice
cognition

And once again
he realizes then
that his wife, Marie,
my mother,
is four years gone.

He returns to sleep
and I pace the halls
going from
room to room.

 ******

Goes to ground.

I need to get on trainer, but wanted to throw this out before I forgot to ask.

Has anyone had odd reactions to chlorine? I had my swim last night, and shortly after I got home my nose was running uncontrollably and I was sneezing like crazy. It was so bad I couldn't lean over my daughter's crib to put her to sleep without grabbing one of her shirts to plug my nose. When I went to bed I stuck tissue up my nose...and was still sneezing. I think I netted 2-3 hours sleep.

I know I have allergies, but they've been better the last week, and this reaction only started after swimming. It hasn't continued throughout today even though I've been outside for several hours. I also noticed the pool guy was just leaving as we checked in at the gym. Lots of times my nose is runny after a swim, but this was ridiculous...and the sneezing became painful.

Yes. Sometimes I do have that reaction to the pool. I've assumed it's the chlorine. But I don't have it all the time, so I don't know.

I am back from my bike ride, glad I could get out there tonight.

I told my husband I was going to ride tonight and swim tomorrow morning and he laughed since I haven't managed to get out of bed with the 5 AM alarm all week.

Who is going to call my cell phone at 5 AM eastern time to tell me to get my a$$ out of bed to the pool before work tomorrow?

Umm. Since that's 4:00 a.m. my time, I think I'll pass. But I'm right there with you. I stay up too late, especially when my husband is not home.

Good for you! I've thought of doing this as well, but I can't dive down very deep. Inner ear issues -- it's the same thing that keeps me from those flip turns. (blasted balance issues)

Talking of which I still got dizzy ear labyrinthitis....it's intermittent.  Always worse after swimming.  I cannot close my eyes in the shower ever coz i fall over - hehe!

An antihistamine eases it when it's really bad.

I think as long as I swim I'm stuck with it.  Ho hum.

Ok Manatees, need some help making a decision.  I have missed a couple bike commutes and a swim this week owing to being sick.  I am still not completely well, but feeling pretty good.  I was thinking about going for a swim tonight, but also about riding to work in the AM.  I'm not sure I should do this at this point as I will lose out on about an hour of sleep if I do both (and sleep is what is helping me get better quickly...).  It's looking like we will be getting some rain S/M/Tu so won't be riding outside for those days at least.  I *could* swim on Saturday morning, but not sure I want to be up at the crack of dawn...  Whaddya'll think?

I feel like doing both!  But know it would be a mistake.  Right now, sitting on my couch, I don't totally feel like getting up and ready to go for a swim though.  And considering Salty is taking me on a 40mile bike ride next Saturday, I should probably get the bike in...But then again, swimming with all women on Thurs eve vs. the old men on Saturday morning... sigh.

Ride.

Swimming when sick not good.

However set the alarm for that Saturday morning swim, if you feel like bouncing out of bed then do it.  If not enjoy the luxury of telling the alarm to fook off.

Ah Jo, I like the way you think.  I have been sitting here trying to convince myself to go swimming.  I know if I am struggling this badly to make a decision, I just shouldn't do it.  So ride it is.

Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)

Good day all. I hope you are all doing well and are ready for a great weekend. A few thoughts:

Ben - Have you tried the rice in a bag with the computer thing? I know a few people like my daughter who have saved electronic devices that way.

Stacey - The major difference between leaders and managers that I have seen is that leaders have the vision to plot a course for the future of a company. Managers can motivate people to do the jobs that the leaders need done so that the vision is brought to life. I have way more I could go in to, but I'll save you all the rant.

Michael - TW and I are just starting to dip our toes into the pool of parental challenges. I truly feel for you and you are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you enjoy the lifeguard class, show those kids what a real adult can do!

Kirsten - All I know is that sleep and rest will help eliminate any sickness I have much better than exercise. YMMV

Renee - I think that some of your formatting woes may go away in a week or so. One of the benefits of the new site, I believe.

Jen - Great job on the yoga. Keep stretching!

JoGo - Foam roller. Do it. Now!

Judi - Did you get up and get to the pool this morning???? Send me your cell number, I'll get your butt outta bed

Kate - School's out FOREVER!!! Soon, very soon. Great job.

Erin - I have had that sort of thing happen on days where community pool was a bit stronger on the chems. Never at home in our pool, but we are not having to fight multiple people of unknown hygiene quality in our pool either. I think a high level of chlorine has an affect.

TJ - I have much love for the accounting folks. Well, OK, for one in particular anyway

Felicia - I hope that you are at least trying to get a good night sleep while your husband is away. I know you are a highly functioning Mom, but sometimes we need to take care of ourselves first.

I leave today with this:

We all need lots of powerful long-range goals to help us past the short-term obstacles!

I want to add something to my streak-green smoothies in the morning.

I had a friend have a C-T-J talk with me about goals last night.  She was brutally honest.  I need to lose weight.  I am going to see how much I can lose in 8 weeks as part of my base building/prep for MCM training.  Focus!!  Green smoothies are my breakfast weapon.

Send me your cell number, I'll get your butt outta bed  YES, I DID!!  Shocking isn't it?

Kate - School's out FOREVER!!! Soon, very soon. Great job.

Erin - I have had that sort of thing happen on days where community pool was a bit stronger on the chems. Never at home in our pool, but we are not having to fight multiple people of unknown hygiene quality in our pool either. I think a high level of chlorine has an affect.

Darn! My husband uses those rice-like chips when he needs to get moisture out of his electronics. I think rubbing alcohol also helps.

Going to try that today if it doesn't take care of itself in the meantime.

bcraht - 2013-05-09 8:15 PMOk Manatees, need some help making a decision.
Bike!!!! Of course I could be a bit biased right now. lol. Last you swam was Monday and last bike was Saturday. Need a bike ride But besides that, which do you feel most "up to" doing?

After being sick, I tend to pick up riding before swimming too. Bit less sensitive to problems from that.

Most of my lunches are green smoothies. They're great, even my dog loves them
