Cool - can't wait to hear how it goes. I am racing a trail HM this weekend, And Arend has a HM as well. Anybody else got races coming up?

Oh nice! Any goals in mind?

I imagine by nature, it's probably a little difficult to have specific goals for trail events.

My goal is "faster than last year" (1:38:10).  I'm not sure yet what goal pace Shane is going to throw at me...

It should be interesting.  This time last year I was doing some speedwork with a little less mileage.  This year, zero speedwork but more mileage.  Easy run paces are 15-30s/km faster than this time last year.

Hmm interesting. And that is by Shane's design?

And without any specific goals and no "speedwork", how does he figure out the goal pace? Just perception of how training has been going? Or is it more just a target to see how it goes to establish some sort of a baseline for running?

Arend - very nicely done.  6 of them had to hurt.

Been really busy with life lately and had very little time for BT - wish I could hang with this group more, but it's nice just to get a few minutes to check in.

Well, it's by design in the sense that I'm in the middle of a bike focus block so all my running has been easy while I hit the bike hard.  There has been no focus towards this race, it's just something to break up the winter a bit.  I'll be switching to a run focus once the weather starts to cooperate.  This should give an idea of what to use as a baseline if the road conditions are decent on the weekend.

I'm racing the next 3 Sundays.  10 mile TT, 20k TT, and a 7.2 mile uphill road race.

Your goal should be to beat Jimmy Johnson's (the NASCAR driver) recent HM at Daytona.

Home from Costa Rica. Yesterday was tough, 20 hour travel day door to door (tiny violins, I know.,,,,). Schedule started up again today but travel hangover forces the bike to tonite. Was able to get 4 runs in and basically pushed in the weight department so happy about that

Nothing for me today as we are digging out from another snow storm.  Did I mention it's getting old?

Jason, the goal pace Shane has set for me won't quite get me to Jimmy Johnson's 1:29 HM.  I'll be a few minutes off that.

Actually fun.

Anyone else training?

Always.

Doing 4 miles at 15K race pace tonight on the track + WU/CD

Other than that, it's a little bit lighter of a week in anticipation of the race.

I've been trying to be more diligent about my strength and drills. I fell off a touch when I was on vacation.

At least after your HM, you won't have to jump in a race car and qualify for the Daytona 500 later in the day.

But I was thinking around 1:35 for you as a WAG not knowing how poor the conditions might be.  1:33ish if they are more ideal.  Then again...what do I know...I've never run in the snow before.

Yeah it really depends on the road conditions.  The forecast for Sunday looks good now but some more snow is coming on Friday so it depends on how well that gets cleaned up.

Had 1:15 of what was mostly a recovery set of intervals on the trainer early this morning that ended with:

8 min race cadence @98%
4 EZ
6 @ 102%
3 EZ
4 @ 106%

Normally that would be very manageable, but this morning it went complete bust halfway through the 6 minute interval. My legs are evidently toast at the moment. I have had some tough workouts piled up recently, and I am work-driving in the car a lot this week (8 hours total today, probably 16 total by Thursday) so that probably has something to do with it. On the upside, it is currently 72F/22c and sunny here and tomorrow is supposed to be 75F/24c!

Hey Salty - as one who spends their life in strategic planning mode, I tend to think of goals a little bit differently than many when it comes to racing. in my world goals are very specific things in which you have a great amount of control over and thus your ability to control and execute those goals as planned becomes the primary measure of success. In other words, effective goals focus on performance, not outcomes. So just some of my goals for the race are to:

1) Get to the race early enough to get a legit 30 minute warm up under my belt.
2) Manage the first 3.5 miles of the race at an endurance effort primarily by RPE
3) from there through mile 8.5 run at steady state effort, really managing the effort on the ups and then hammer the downs (quads will not be happy at the end of this race)
4) through 11 miles allow the uphills to climb into tempo effort, and still hammer the downs.
5) 11 to finish is just a foot race with anyone that is around. I cannot beat anyone in a close sprint to the finish, so if I am not alone in space then it is here that I have to get away.

Achieving the first 3 goals are the hardest, but If I can execute each of those goals perfectly, it will set me up in position to execute the next ones well, and the end outcome will be the best it possibly could be. Other goals are to only make well-considered passes after the initial sort-out, don't run up on the runners in front so that I can maintain vision, and really focus on an inside foot strike, particularly late in the race.

So I have no idea how these goals will manifest themselves as an overall pace, finish time, finish place, or qualification. But I do know if I execute these goals perfectly I will have had the best race possible for me, and the above outcomes will absolutely be the best they could be.

All that said, should I happen to blow my goals but somehow still manage an 8 minute pace on this particular course and AG podium, well, then I suppose I would find some consolation in that. ;^)

I think this is excellent, Rusty.

It's pretty similar to how I prefer to do things as well. There are just so many things that you can't control, it seems that time and energy is better spent creating goals around the things that you can.

Running XC, where the courses often have hugely varying terrain and rarely 100% accurate measurement really lent itself to creating these types of goals.

It actually makes me a little bit uncomfortable when people start throwing  time goals at me. Especially our coach.

My goal for NZ is to have fun   I might even do it w/o electronics so I just look up more and enjoy the day.

For upcoming months, I found a pool close to where I work and they do masters swimming at noon every weekday.  So I might see how that goes.

Yup, leaving this Sunday (arrive Tuesday), and I'll be staying till March 10th.  I'm planning a couple days on the beach after the race, then a little time to explore the south island.  Hope I'll be used to driving on the left by then

Actually, Taupo is just 1 timezone away from Hawaii and only -21 hours to the U.S. west coast, so race start time is 10am PST on Feb 28th.  It'll give you guys something to do at work!

Not exactly Freddite numbers, but this licked my butt tonight.  5x5min @ 260, 265, 270, 280, 285 - last one was tough, and it should be since it's about 117% based on my current CP.

Oh, and I swam 2600M this morning.  It was a good day for me.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
