NyNy asked me to check in with a proof of life post, so here I am

Finally back into regular (all low-intensity even though I did a semi-longish bike today) training.

Trying to breathe in between trying to keep my boys in jail breathing too. Again THANK YOU for all who voted in polls, signed petitions, wrote emails, etc. The hugely good news from today is that one of their legal challenges in court was adjourned to next week because the attorneys for the government failed to show up! (and an important document wasn't signed) So, we have another week. Precious, precious minutes.

It's one of those rare times I say THANK GOD for the complete incompetence of Indonesian officials ...

I GET TO SEE KINGSLEY ON SUNDAY!!!!!

Is that a rattlesnake?

If it's a Clark's Spiny Lizard, then it's clearly part of the family. Nice job

I forgot to say that the next year, same tri (Tri for the Cure) almost everyone was stopped on one spot in the course. My coach would have killed me if I stopped so I kept riding. Ran over a snake crossing the road. Yes, everyone stopped because of the snake.

Like I said, at least it wasn't a spider!

We got a long sought after yellow and green puffer fish. We named it HR Pufnstuf.  It is the cutest little thing.

And the dog is off the table for now.

So much cuteness and funny ^^^^. Good luck with those chicks.

Bummer that neither the chicks nor the fish will make a good running partner.  Oh well.  Maybe the chicks will grow into beasties that encourage you to run like heck to get away from them.   Or as a protein source...

Wow, thankfully I missed those years! Or at least had different timing on the bike.

Yep. It's supposed to hit 90+ this next week. Betting hikers/bikers see them all over the trails as they come out of their dens.

Looks like all kinds of epic.  I would be very nervous riding in a tight pack when they talk about the potholes to avoid.  Does the peleton stay mainly intact for most of the race or does it string out?  I noticed some of the tires looked like reduced air pressure.  What psi are you thinking about?

There is a series of very similar races in Eastern Washington that has been on my longer term radar.  I can't wait to hear your thoughts after the race.  Good luck and try to be safe.

I was visiting my parents when they lived in Mammoth and my mom was riding a bike and I was running. Our conversation was something like this:

Me "So when I go run on the trails, do I need to worry about rattlesnakes or anything?"

Mom "Not that I know of. We've been here for a year and a half and I have yet to see a snake."

Me "Mom?"

Mom "Yes?"

Me "What's that on the road?"

I'm looking at my race schedule and thinking about making some major revisions.  I originally had this:

Mar 14 – Stewart Mt. Trail HM

Mar 28 – Yakima River Canyon Marathon

Apr 4 – Honeywagon HM

May 2 – Haggen to Haggen 5k

May 9 - Lost Lake 25k

Jun 13 – Boise 70.3

These HM's are taking a toll on my ability to stick to my HIM plan which is for my A race in Boise.  I'm thinking of cutting some of these longer races and adding a few 5k's.  I've got the strength and base to add another quality session to my weekly tempo run and I'd sure like to break 20 minutes this year.  I like where I'm at with my run fitness relative to my HIM run goal so feeling like this doesn't detract much if any as long as I keep descent weekly mileage up.

My swim is going great.  I did a comfortably hard 2100 yard effort in the pool recently and was several minutes under my swim goal time so I think I'm happy with my progress there.

I'm getting my trainer sessions in but the long races have hindered my long rides which I think are really going to be the key to my race.  I've been chasing a six year old goal for my HIM (4 attempts) and really want to crush it.

Anyway, I'm just stepping back a bit and reevaluating where I'm at and what I want to focus on going into June.  I thought I could handle all the long races but really after leaving it all out there last weekend I'm pretty fatigued. Thankfully my foot pain is gone.  I do see the 5k's as less risk and they are a lot of fun to me.  Do you think I should do the longer races and try to tone them down, skip them and do the 5k's, or scale back the racing all together (not likely) and focus strictly on the training plan?

Oh and I ran across this:

http://www.nwrunarcheryclassic.com/

Anybody ever done anything like this.  Looks like fun.  Out there getting my Katniss on.

Wow, those are a lot of races leading up to your A race!  If it were me, I'd probably drop all but the April HM and May 5k.  And, I'd probably treat the HM as a training run.  Of course, I've only done a few HIM, so you should probably wait for advise from those with more experience

Dude, didn't you race like 3 HMs in a row?

It's not just the fact that you are racing longer distances. It's the frequency, the intensity and the distance.

I wouldn't run a marathon 2.5 months out from an A race and I would question the purpose of the other races as they relate to my A. Then I would decide.

For me, to run a marathon well I have to dedicate quite a bit of time to the training. Which would leave little room for the S and B. Once I ran the marathon, I would need some time off, followed by some recovery/ramping back up slowly building base with little to no quality. THEN I would start another training block. 2 months between a marathon and a 70.3 seems really, really short.

Thanks.  I guess this is my takeaway and makes a lot of sense.

"the purpose of the other races as they relate to my A"

I think I was thinking that in the back of my mind and my intent was to do the longer races as supported training efforts.  If I can keep myself reined in I think that works.  Any race I do should not interfere with my HIM training plan with maybe the exception of the marathon.  It is kind of a sentimental race for me.  This would be the fifth year in a row for me and none of them had a great deal of specific training focus as prep.  It was just something I had to prove to myself I could do after being sick.  The other races I don't really care that much about other than they are fun.  I love the experience of events even if I not racing all out.

Not exactly sure where I'll be draw but I will definately keep in mind the purpose.

PS Ran in the Solanas yesterday.

It's lightweight and neutral. I liked the padded collar and general comfort of the interior since it's meant to accommodate barefoot running.

There seemed to be an excessive amount of cushioning in the heel and under the arch. The toe box was very narrow.

In general, it's a solid shoe. I am glad to see Zoot "reaching the broader running audience" but honestly, running is running and I'm  not sure why they weren't doing this from the beginning.

The $100 price-point is great. As more and more shoes are starting to get away from that.

So, I won't be buying them any time soon but I was pleasantly surprised.

The reigned in part concerns me too.  I am not always as disciplined as I think I am or can be.  I think I'm safer on the trail races because time is so irrelevent and I know I am not going to compete in my age group.  I think I'm more inclined to just do my own thing there.  It is the road races that worry me and are the ones I probably should avoid.

YMC marathon is the race where I have seen the most people taking pictures along the way and just soaking it all in.  The whole course is closed to traffic and it is a surreal environment.   Maybe you should do it as a training run this year and just jump in as my pacer, there's a spot about 5 miles in that's accessible.

The reigned in part does concern me though Steve. But you know better than I if you can actually do that.

That marathon is on my todo list. I love that area.

Maybe you should do it as a training run this year and just jump in as my pacer, there's a spot about 5 miles in that's accessible.

hahaha I think I could have a long career of rabbiting middle portions of races! Plus I wouldn't have to pay race entry every again!

The one time I have run on the canyon road was when I was in highschool.  Some track and field invite was coming up and I was border line on my weight for my pole (remember I was a pole vaulter) My pole was rated for 115 lb and I was right at 115. For invite meets they actually weighed you in on occasion, to make sure you weren't over the rated weight and our highschool didn't own a 120 pole so I HAD to be that weight or under.

We were on a camping trip in the canyon and I went out and ran once (because I hated running and it was such a big deal I figured doing it once would be all it would take LOL)

That looks awesome. I didn't realize your gravel road race was over 100 miles long, crazy! Can't wait to hear about it!

So much awesome in one post! Glad to see things lookin up, and that you are taking care of yourself!!!!

Agreed!

Glad to see that you're back in action and that the boys in jail are continuing to have those precious minutes.  I really really hope that that situation can be resolved in their favor.

Yay for Kingsley time!!!!!!

I tried them because they were supposed to be great for triathlons -sockless, quick to get on- but I ended up hating them.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
