Update on the doctor appointment:

He said that it sounds like a stress fracture, but couldn't see anything on the x-ray.  He did think it's odd that I've had the symptoms on and off since April.  Apparently, there is a small number of people who experience shin splints with more localized pain.  So, I have a bone scan on Friday and a follow-up on Tuesday.  He doesn't want to treat for a stress fracture when it might be a mechanics issue.

Bummer, hope the bone scan is conclusive and you get treated for what ails you quickly.

Have they looked at a root cause for the stress fractures? I mean we both have asthma and take steroid inhalers....we both have hyopthyroid.....and my guess is we both take the H2 blockers cause they say they help the silent gerd of asthma.....I have never (KNOCK ON WOOK) had a stress fracture.  It seems like our risk factors are pretty equal so it doesn't make sense to me.

I don't take h2 blockers.  I had a bone-density test done the first time through this, and it was all fine.  I would be surprised if it changed that much in 5 years.

I think that's why he's thinking there may be something else going on that's causing this.  My right leg hurts sometimes even when it's "healed."

Skrat - I love that you raced for your friend Heather, she sounds like an amazing person

Jo - way to go with your bike rides!!!

Yanti - as long as you've got your bike, you'll be fine.

Jen - I hope the bone scan shows something!

Kirsten - WOOO HOOOOOO IMCANADA!!!  (I'm planning on being broke and signing up for 2015)

To everyone I've missed/forgotten... my apologies, my brain hates me.

I've been meaning to buy the Pure Drifts (and some new T7s for HM-M)

I didn't get the same mileage from the Asics 2170's that I got from my Saucony Guide's. I keep trying different stuff, NB's didn't last. Guide's were changed (and I would still be in them otherwise), Asics didn't last, etc.

I'm like the friggin' Goldilocks of shoes.

Go run in soft sand or dirt or grass for a year barefoot.

Maybe kidding. That's just my n=1. But very few people (no one I've met) has had foot/shoe problems like I did. NOT kidding when I say I made more than one shoe store clerk cry. Finally it came down to making my feet so that any (large enough) shoe would fit.

Also, it's ballz good for your running without too much impact.

There's actually an article here on BT that cites me that I didn't even know existed ... google TriAya beginnertriathlete and "dog ate my orthotics" and you should find it.

Originally posted by cdban66 I wandered into the sporting goods store at lunch today to buy goggles. "Hey look, they have running shoes, I must go try some on". No, I didn't walk out with a pair, but I did try on a pair of Brooks Pure Flow's and the Pure Cadence as well. Actually, one on one foot, one on the other at one point, trying to find the difference. I have been considering a lower drop then my current 10 mm. Does anyone have any experience with the Pure line from Brooks? Any info would be appreciated.

Chris - I love my Pure Flows.  4mm drop vs 10mm is huge difference.  I can not imagine ever wearing a shoe with a huge drop again.

Hi all -

Sorry for the delay.

Short version:

5:45 total time - Good Swim, Great Bike, Ok run (but a good excuse for it being slower than normal) and absolutely horrible, inexcusable transitions.

5th place overall, 3rd in my age group!  First ever podium.  I'm super duper happy, and had a wonderful time.

Felicia, I hope your surgical sites heal up well and quickly.

Joanne, sorry to hear about your Marathon, but glad to hear that you should be able to do the 10k.

Jo, congrats on the long ride, that is awesome!

Chad, I hope your race went well; your friend is lucky to have a friend such as you.

Elesa, very cool about your not-for-profit.  Sounds like a great cause.

Yanti, have you packed your bike?

Jen, I really hope it isn't a stress fracture, but if it is, take care of it.  Two words: Aqua jogging.  Sorry to hear about your other injuries...and I hope your kitty is ok too!

I think that catches me up.

Congrats, and have, uhhh fun

I know, right?  This is why I wonder why people don't live off the course--gotta get your money's worth!

Which one are you doing again? Maybe I can come up and spectate. I'll be sure my lawn chair has two cup holders.

Salty - you want to carpool?  I would kill to be part of a Salty Shyte Show road trip!

Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach (hadn't been there since I was a kid)

Running on the beach at Seaside

The finish line goes under the stage

I have ran on that beach at Seaside.  I loved it.  At first, I was avoiding the water - but then I decided to just run a straight line.  When the waves crashed and ran up further, I just kept running my straight line.  Sometimes that water was knee deep.  Talk about a workout.  It was one of my favorite runs to date.  I love Seaside.

Last August 2012 I had an MRI which showed the beginning of a stress fracture. Ortho said do nothing but swim - I wasn't a swimmer at the time (which is actually how I ended up here doing tris - heh). Anyway, it took FOREVER to heal. Turns out, it did heal in time BUT I also had posterior tibial tendonitis. I found a PT who knows his stuff and is en endurance athlete himself. Took him about 10 minutes to diagnose it. I had 10 graston sessions and FINALLY it's just about gone.

Does the pain actually go away while you run and then come back after? That's a classic tendon sign because once the tendon gets good and warm it'll slide better - but once you stop......EEK! Where on your leg is the pain?

Good luck - I kind of hope it is a stress fracture because at least you can ID the problem and start to work towards the solution. If not - don't give up!!

Chad, there are things in life that matter and those things are not things at all, they are people. You had an awesome experience with a number of people through out your entire report. From Heather to the folks at your new job to your trainer all the way to your competitors, all top notch stuff! You truly were blessed and you brought back some icing on the cake, PODIUM!!!!!

Nice, nice job, I'm glad things are turning around for you!
