kickitinok - 2010-04-14 11:20 AM Race plan? Do I really need a race plan for a sprint? Don't I just swim as fast as I can, bike like mad, then gimp-run for 10 minutes into my run until my quads relax?

no.

you have to go at 98% of you're FTP.

you have to have at least a 45 oz aero bottle.  and one behind your seat.

tape 6 gu's to your bike.

two spare tubes.  and 8 CO2's.

you have to wear newtons.

compression sleeves on the legs and arm coolers.

you have to have a tri bike and race wheels.

this is all a bunch of crap.  you just have to have fun.

i've tried calling galveston beach patrol twice today but to no avail.  my wife also want to do it.  we'll get it figured out. andy's right on about the booties.  you won't need them.

You forgot about a complete change in tranistion. don't be embarassed about being naked in public

I'm never embarrassed about being naked in public. Just ask the people at the lake that I did my OWS in. Yes, I got naked in the parking lot afterwards - I needed dry clothes because I had to stop by the vet and pick up my two little snot rocket schnauzers. In an attempt to shield everyone that is the greatness of my body, hubby did hold up a beach towel. I think the wind kind of defeated the purpose, but in the end I only had to sign a couple of autographs so it wasn't too bad.

First OWS was a rousing success! I wasn't scared and it felt GREAT! Woohoo!! I do see where I'm going to need to work on sighting, though. I tend to veer right.

No way I am missing the sprint now at Lonestar!! Maybe I'll sign up to be a stripper...

I think I just threw up some in my mouth...  I pray that you mean wetsuit stripper....

i was reading about this race in new zealand where the RD encourages this.  and after the race they have a contest to see who wins that "race".  no joke.  we should put this on the mg agenda.  i'll sherpa for all the girls that make it.

He!! I'll offer to help in transition. How about a naked muddy buddy. I get to hand wash to girls at the end

Ryan - couple of questions.  At 181W, what was your watts to kg ratio at that power level?  Also wondering what the Boise course was like, cause that's a crushing pace.  Last thing, the average - was that the actual average or you pedaling or NP average?

Thanks

I sent you a PM on this... didn't want to bog down the board with a bunch of numbers, but quickly: ~3 w/kg; and that was average watts, NP was slightly higher.

swbkrun - 2010-04-14 5:16 PM

This was Boise--- Not easy to get a "REAL" idea when you are dancing around HUGE puddles, and avoiding lightning storms!  MISERABLE!  And yes if you haven't figured it out yet... LISTEN TO EVERYTHING RYAN says.  He did crush the bike... And the run... and every other race that he does!  (this MAY or MAY NOT be Ryan on the bike you decide !)

Steve/Kyla and the folk in that area may not say its the 2nd year of the franchise Surprised

Durant was the best think that could have happened to Seattle OKC

Yeah, just think, Portland could have taken him, but they took Greg Oden...

If I am reading everything right there is no problem - limit for a wetsuit is 5mm which is what Helix has...  the rest of it seems to address speed suits that the pros wear - apparently they started to contain too much flotation materials such as neoprene, etc...

Took my first ride on the new bike tonight - felt great!  This was also my first outdoor ride of the year (except for the test ride of the bike).  Last year my fastest pace over a ride was right at 20 mph.  Tonight I made 19.6, granted it was less than an hour ride.  Hopefully after some work, I will be able to make those speeds consistently!

Yay, go Thunder!!!!

Have you tried Schlegals or Bicycle Alley downtown?  They've got quite a bit of tri clothing.  Actually, the last time I was in Schlegals, which was about a month ago, they had a pretty good selection of stuff.

Holly - Yes, I practically live at Schlegel's. Did you see their killer selection of She Beest Cycling wear? Adorable! I purchased a blue leopard print shirt. Going back for the skort in a couple of weeks No bras, though...

Suzy, check with your fitter before you get to upset because my fitter actually turned my seat a 1/4 inch or so off center on purpose during my last fit.  It is supposed to give some room for keeping everything out of the way when in aero.  (Don't know if that applies to men and women????)  I can say, it took a week or so to get used to but I don't think I will ever ride a straight seat again.  Some of the seat manufacturers (I have read it in Cobb's lit for sure) actually tell you that the seat should be turned left or right a little in their manuals.

Just a thought........

Very sad, my New Balance 1063's have been discontinued.  Tried on the 1064's last night and didn't like the feel of them.  Luckilly they had one last pair 0f 63's in my size.

Not sure why they have to change shoes so often.  They tend to never feel the same.  I used to use Brooks Glycerin and they did the same to them.

Here is my big news for the day.  After fighting with my HR monitor (Old trusty Polar F6) for the last 6 weeks, it finally died.  Either that I don't have a HR at all.  Looked at repairing it again and replacing the HR transmitter and after comparing the costs decided it was time and bit the bullet.

My new Garmin 305 Forerunner is on its way!

Now I will have a whole bunch of data to stress over!  Anybody got any tips on what features you really like and don't like????  I have a "training" sprint race in 2 weeks and don't want to have watch issues....even though I will now be wearing 2 watches during my races along with already having a computer on my bike.  Let the zingers begin.

What is your size? There is a New Balance Outlet near  my work. I will check for you to see if they have any pairs of the 1063's in your size if you like.

My new Garmin 305 Forerunner is on its way!

Love my 305 - just a suggestion, get the cadence sensor for the bike, and the quick release strap.  This way you can dump your current bike computer and just use the 305 for both bike and run.

http://www.gpscity.ca/garmin-forerunner-205-and-305-quick-release-bike-wrist-mount-kit.html

http://www.gpscity.ca/garmin-cadence-sensor-gsc-10.html

The only downside I have about the 305 is that I don't swim with it, so when I get to transition it takes me a couple of seconds to get on the quick release strap (much better than the plastic one).  I don't put the strap on before hand because I'm worried I might tear the wetsuit when pulling it off over the strap (there's a piece of plastic that sticks up).

Single best thing I've bought for training, and it's great for racing.  I know a lot of people say to ignore the numbers at the Sprint distance but the 305 keeps me honest - especially on the run.  I know when I'm not running fast enough.

Don't worry about wearing 2 watches... I know some really smokin' hot chicks that do it.
Seriously though, get the quick release kit for it. Easily mounts on bike, and then can snap off, and pop onto velcro wrist band. And the cadense sensor. For $40 its great and easy to mount.
My wife has the 305, and really like the virtual partner feature. Essentially racing yourself.

Only the coolest of triathletes can pull off the two watch look, so welcome to the elite club Wink

I am a fan of Under Armour myself. They have lots of black.  Dicks carries a nice selection.  Only problem is they don't go on sale.

Suzy, more important than if it is straight, how does it feel?  If I remember you have a leg length discrepancy so maybe this fitting accounts for that.  My aero bars are not parallel and I want them that way.  Go by feel.

Glen - strength training.  That is one of my goals for this season.  I did a lot in college and am sad that I can't lift as often as I like.  The question is what are you lifting for, strength or larger mass?  Remember with larger mass comes more weight.  Try to visualize this:  you muscles have blood vessels flowing all throughout;  the larger the muscle mass the more compression you have on all those blood vessels when the muscles contract and thus reduced blood flow.  That is why endurance athletes don't have large buldging muscles = reduced blood flow.  The calves are larger b/c they are more explosive (fast twitch) muscles when powering up hills or sprinting on the bike. If you plan on racing the faster races (sprints and olympics) then you want a good balance of fast and slow twitch muscles, but if you plan on going longer work towards the slow twitch direction.  Upper body needs strength in the shoulders for supporting your body in aero and lats for swimming.  Good abs and lower back are needed for all around core strength.

If you want to increase strength but not add too much bulk then do lower weight/ high reps.   It is a bonus if you can combine activities.  For example, do dumbbell bicep curls and alternate leg lifts to the side while standing.  Or military press with dumbbells while squatting on each lift.  Just be very concious of your form.   If you belong to a gym that teaches fitness classes I recommend taking one every now and then for good ideas on new lifting techniques.  Aerobic classes have come a long way from the Jane Fonda days and they incorporate plyometrics, strength training, core, aerobic threshold workouts and active recovery.
