Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread

I hope everyone's training is going well.  I am back at it after being sick for 2 weeks with no training at all. I think mentally it has affected me more than anything, but like on race day you have to adapt and keep moving forward.

FYI -  I live in Madison and this is my 3rd time doing IMOOOOO,  so if there is anything I can answer or help with please PM me or ask on here. I never mind helping anyone out.

For those of you who are doing IMOOOO for the first time, it is an experience of a lifetime, as the volunteers and spectators make this such a fabulous day and the course is fun.

BuckHamilton - 2011-08-10 4:29 PM Sunscreen question. Is there a station that they put on sunscreen for you after the swim?
Yes. Exiting the terrace by the line of portojohns an entire row of vounteers.

Yep, just make sure that you rub it in. They just kind of add a whole bunch really fast and not very
thorough.

4,000 yards swim just done.

This is the hardest part of IM training imho.... the 4-6 weeks out where the fatigue is so heavy and the goal isn't quite there.

Almost there folks!!

I'm recovering OK but I am tired. I admit it.

Agreed about tough time training right now. I am completely beat up and tired. Just got back from a 2.5 hour run and my body did not respond too well. One more long run to go and some recuperation and recovery can begin. Hang in there everyone!

As we all approach the much need taper period, my question for everyone is this. This being my 2nd ironman( 2010 IMmoo) how does everyone approach taper? Last year I used a 3 week taper bringing down my volume each week but I think my I intensities stayed pretty high, do you also bring down your training intensities along with your volume or a mixture of both, just curious what everyone says, taper for all races have been hard for me, probably more mental than physical, always think I should be doing more! Hope everyone is staying healthy and strong as possible right now!

Scott,

Now that you've ridden the "stick", interested in your perspective on how important you feel that section is to ride? Just like you I've ridden the loops a few times, but have yet to ride ( or drive ) the out/back section. How does that hill on the return compare to the loop hills? Good luck w/ your last big training week.

I'd put that last hill on the stick as nearly a non-event comparatively.  Not sure if that is a result of location and excitement of getting to the run or if it is really simply easier.  That being said, it is always good to have that ride of the "stick" in to know what is coming and where to give that extra little "push" to carry a hill etc... I'm a believer is riding the whole course.

And I would say that when I hit it I was like... come on already I am done with hills! But then again that is just me and I suck at hills

Honestly there are many different and valid approaches to tapering. I'm coached so I don't even know what my taper looks like yet lol.

There is a school of thought that for the average AGer that a 1-2 week taper might be better than a 3 week taper as too much fitness is lost in the long tapers.

Again, kind of a grey area....

I have a coach too.  Looked ahead to next week on Trainiing peaks, with no sign of taper there.   Whatever.  He says it I do it.  I trust the process.

I just wanted to stop in and say good luck and finish strong on your last couple weeks of training. As mentioned above this part is the hardest portion of the traning, just get the work done, trust your plan, and of course get the rest needed.

I am not racing this year, but volunteering instead. I will be lending out my services as well since my family lives in Madison and will be staying with my parents. If anyone needs anything, questions, recommendations, etc, just let me know.

Finally if any of your are driving from out of town, and have yet to ride the course, I would be happy to give a ride of the course for all of you maybe on Friday?

I come from a swimming background and I know that many coaches will taper each member of their team differently based on how they are feeling.  Personally, I do better with more taper.  Less intensity, and a slow progression down in time.  Easier bikes and runs.  I do tend to get foot/knee issues late in my training programs for long events -- 1/2 irons and marathons, so I actually have bailed out of workouts and even one marathon not run at all the week of the event.  I still felt refreshed and performed well.  I am definitely a MOPer though too.  I'm not out to set land records - just feel good about my race.

As long as you show up rested, and don't rest too long, I'm not sure there is much difference in how you taper.  I used a 2-week taper for IMWI last year, it worked well, and I'll do the same this year.  Check my logs for details.

If you're doing a lot of running, you might want to taper in that sport a bit earlier for obvious reasons.  I wouldn't do much intensity on the run during taper, as the injury risk doesn't seem worthwhile.  Besides, we'll be running painfully slow during the race.

I tried a four month taper before my half in Racine..I felt very rested on the walk to the start but it kind of fell apart after that.

With regard to tapering, I am fortunate to have a friend who is a Tri coach and 4 time Kona qualifier, he is heading back again this year.  In short he said it all depends  His first question was what volume per week I was doing and based taper off that.  Some pros will hit high volume weeks of 26+ hours and will actually taper down up to a month prior to an event.  Keep in mind a pros taper week/weeks could equal many of our peak training weeks.  My peak weeks will be anywhere from 15-18 hours and I will be tapering about 11-14 days prior to the event.

I think it comes down to how much work you have to recover from coupled with each individuals ability to recover.

Best of luck to everyone leading into the last month of training and tapering.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone meeting their goals come race day!

One month to go . . .

had a fabulous 2.5 hour run tonight minus the lady who ran a stop sign and almost took me out. I live in the country, and assume that people do not see me and are not going to come to a complete stop at the stop signs.

I know we all run and bike on the defensive side, and it keeps us 'safe'.

Road kill + Manure made me thankful it was not a hot and humid day here in Madison.

On a lighter side, I would think the same herd of cattle I run by all the time would not stamped away from me like I am some wild banshee.

Anyone out there dealing with insomnia? I have noticed one of the issues I have dealt with in the past when training really ramps up and my mind and body are exhausted is I just can't sleep. Going on the 4th night of staring up at the ceiling. I'm tired beyond belief and it is starting to affect workouts but still, wide awake as soon as head hits the pillow. Hopefully this breaks soon.

not full insomnia, but I'm certainly not sleeping as well as I usually do the past few nights!  Last big weekend and then I start pulling back (well, 6 hr ride sat, 4.5 hr ride the following, so it's all relative I guess!)

I also don't sleep as well after a difficult day of training as I do following lighter days.  I tend to wake up several times during the night after a big day.  Thankfully, I usually fall back to sleep before too long after waking.

I'm so glad to hear this!  I have not been sleeping well this week at all and it is starting to annoy me!  The humidity is gone. We have the windows open.  I'm TIRED!  But I wake up all of the time in the night.  I don't get much sleep to begin with!!  Hopefully it ends soon!
