Had a 45min 1 on 1 coached swim session last night.  I think there was more talking than there was swimming, but it was all about the things she noted needed improvement/refinement in my stroke.  After the initial warm up she said what I expected - good looking stroke, just needs some refinement.  I was hoping for, but not expecting, a magic bullet of "you're doing this one thing horribly wrong, and if we fix it you'll gain some speed" - it was nice to dream.

So, I need to work on my arms being wider at entry - much wider apparently, need to work on a high elbow during recovery (I swing my arm wide at the moment and then bring the hand inside), need to finish my pull, but the catch looks decent.  I also have a tendency to snake my lower body through the water, and thta needs to be worked on.

I'll incorporate drills over the next few weeks and then see about scheduling another session with her.  All and all it was valuable, but it also highlighted that having someone work on your stroke would be something that needs to happen on a regular basis to consistently tweak and refine the stroke and make sure the expected changes are taking place.

That is great, Neil - it is always good to have concrete things to work on.
FWIW I my coach gave me the same advice two years ago during a 1-on-1 session: Swim with "wide" arms. That is when I REALLY learned that it is important for someone smart to put actual eyeballs on you in the swim, as often what it FEELS like you are doing is not what is actually going on. My coach kept telling me "wider! wider!" and I swear I felt like my hands were entering the water almost perpendicular to my body. When I saw the video I couldn't believe that it actually looked "normal." I work on it a lot every swim, but I still catch myself on occasion with my hands entering on my centerline, which will def cause snaking as you pull your hand diagonally to clear your hip.

Did she get in the water with you and look at your goings-on underwater? IF not I highly suggest you get some of that next time as well.

Yes to all of that Fred - especially the "swim more" and "learn the strokes." I would definitely add proper backstroke to the list; getting that one right has helped me tremendously with hand anchor and pull for some reason.

Originally posted by Fred D As for the poor power test or result, I would just blow it off. Some days you are the windshield, some days you are the bug. It's one reason I don't love testing that much, but I digress. Hey, more serious question????????? I'm doing more and more of my tri communication through Facebook. I will still always be a part of this group, I'm more just inviting anyone here who wants to friend me that I will of course accept. I am FRED DOUCETTE and my avatar has me crossing an IM finish line. Pretty much 98% of the people on my friends list are triathletes. I don't ever post any political type stuff, but the old BT crowd: Rick, Bryan, Jorge are all there. So are a bunch of STers and pros. This is an open invitation and not an attempt to divert away from BT ( BT is doing that quite well without my help lol).

Hey Fred - missing all you guys, but I still don't do Facebook for all the same reasons you USED to not do Facebook.:^)

And in MY bike news (must be something in the air - could it be spring ?!?), it looks like I am going to be able to pick up a new toy from my LBS tonight that I ordered a while ago. It has been in for about 10 days now, but we have been working through some odds and ends to get it right.

. My fly is quite decent. My backstroke is truly abysmal....

We should do a relay - I am just the opposite!

Absolutely awesome

Is the bottle going to stay, or what's your hydration setup going to be?

Considering adding a felt specific torhans frame mount?  Wonder if that's more aero than the bottle in the triangle?

Might be steep enough where Rusty's LBS threw in the Garmin Vectors for free...

Holy moly Rusty.

The designer in me is flipping out a little and I'm not that into bikes. That thing is sexy!

. Awesomeness! For me I will be at my girls swim meet all weekend. Looking for a run this am and a trainer ride tomorrow. I am finding the trainer getting better. I've found hbo go and with a dedicated program, I am gaining back some of my losses in FTP. Hey how much FTP do you think you would lose with 3.5 months of little if any riding? I was guessing 5-10%?
Fred - It is only a guesstimate based on what I think my FTP was vs. what I think it is currently, but my FTP looks like a full -10% loss after a work-induced herky-jerky September-November training cycle followed by run and swim focus and only minimal bike maintenance since December. I have also been working on getting lightened up, so the w/kg are still looking pretty good.

I see what you did there Jason - too funny! You know I seriously almost didn't post that pic because of the small chairing thing - So apologies for the faux pas, but that is the photo the shop sent me while I was traveling. I'll try to get "better" ones up so that I can stay in the club.Good eye on the drop Fred - that pic was just a little under -13cm, and my fit is -10cm - the shop had raised the seat so it was easier to clamp while they were working on it in their bike stand.I decided to go to shorter cranks, so that caused me to consider a different powermeter (currently using a quarq) AND I wanted to keep the DA rings, so that is why I added the vectors - will keep the quarq on the roadie. I will learn to live with the delta between the two so no more switching back and forth. Will use the frame bottle for training, still have to work out race hydration and computer setup. Sprints I will probably stay with BTA, for olympic I may consider adding a bladder inside the frame - easy to do.Salty - I would be WAY less than honest if I did not admit the designer in me selected this bike over all the others that fit....Hopefully will get to roll it on the road tomorrow. Jumping out of the car to get my pre-race warm up in - race goal #1 accomplished!Good luck to you, Arend!!

I was more towards the 10% mark (240 down to 215) but that was also coming off pneumonia so you might do a little better.  Don't test right away though... do at least a week or 2 of riding first.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
