It is called Bigfuzzydoug's Ten Points to Swimming. Many of you have probably read it but thought I would post the link in case anyone hasn't. A lot of the concepts help me a lot after I read it. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=117554&start=1 George Thanks George, this looks very interesting. Will read it tonight. Always looking for some good swimming tips. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Where to begin....there is so much information and support in this group that it gets a bit overwhelming for a rookie like me...but fun and really helpful too. I just wanted to say thanks, again, for all the info and inspires to date. I am still trying to figure out all the features on this site with inspires, logs, etc. I did my weight training today. It was a struggle, but I gutted through it. I think the biggest mistake I made was due to a change in routine today, I did not eat well before working out. It showed by the time I got to the last few sets. Tomorrow is swim day, so I will digest all the links and tips that everyone has provided on the early catch technique. I am hoping for that 'ah-ha' moment soon, maybe tomorrow? I did want to share a personal story that is in progress. My wife and I signed my two teenagers up for the 5k that is held in conjunction with the Houston Marathon in January. She plans to run the HM, and I will run with the kids in the 5k. Long story short, it has been a saga with my 15 year daughter who had her 3rd knee surgery in November (that is a story for another thread...a long story). Today she got the clearance from her PT to run in the 5k, so we are pleased. My son is a different story. A great kid, but a 6' tall, video game playing couch potato not in small part due to the poor example I have set for most of his 13 years. Well, today, we got him outside running and started a program to go from 0 to 5K in six weeks. He also has asthma, but that is controlled now. He did the run today with a positive attitude before and after the run. My wife and I are elated.....small steps with low key encouragement.....teenagers do not like to be over-coached by their parents..... Anyway, we will be working with him over the holidays into January to get him, and our daughter, ready for the 5k. Wish us luck....and any tips to share for this kind of situation, I would love to hear them. I know it is a bit outside the scope of this MG, but thought I would put that out there. Sorry for the long post. Glen |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glen-you are a good parent. Helping your kids build self confidence through sports is awesome. Sounds like you have two very different kids, but have been able to bring the family together through a race. Neat. Don't get frustrated with the swim and try too many changes. I did that frequently last year and found myself in a tailspin. Maybe focus on one or two things each swim until you have mastered them. The EVF is a very advanced drill and we have a lot of very advanced swimmers in the group. Sometimes the basics will do wonders. George-I do remember reading that post and will review it again. I thought it was helpful way back when, but much of it was so far out of my reach that I had forgotten it. I'm a better swimmer now so hopefully will gain some new insight. John--leave it to you to have TWO Jack Russels. The spazziest dogs of all. My niece has three and the house is crazy when they are around. Personally, the foot feels remarkably calm today. Woke up fine, biked and swam and still fine. Perhaps a little zen healing is taking place. No change in my friend although Paul went to Milwaukee to visit his wife and hopefully see Bob in ICU. Should have an update tonight. I'm off to dinner to celebrate Christmas with my best friend since Kindergarten which will be a very nice break. PS. The double swims are gonna kill me. I haven't done 3,000 yards since the summer. I left looking like a shriveled prune (I cannot afford to look any smaller!) and my upper back is sore. I guess the good news is only two more of these suckers this week. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a GREAT short run today. 3 miles but was only 1 sec. per mile from being in the 9's....AWESOME. Weather was PERFECT and I ran on a new and very fun course. This was the 3rd day in a row to run and I was a little worried about ramping up too quickly but I couldn't pass up on 57 and sunny. Going to make it 4 in a row tomorrow because I came home and jumped in a "ice bath". (cold water only actually) And the legs feel better right now than they did this morning. Really feel good about the training to this point and am really getting back in the groove....Lord knows I need it, to help with the mental distraction. Hope everyone has had Happy Holidays and looking forward to a Merry Christmas...especially those with small kids....I wrote in my blog the other day that the sound of children's laughter is one of the greatest things in the universe.....enjoy it while you can for it will be gone before you know it. I just remembered my son's first experience with charitable work. He won a drawing at our local Chevy dealer for a truck bed full of toys. And I mean FULL. He was 4 or 5. We explained to him what we thought we should do with it and he nodded. He picked out 6 or 8 things he really liked and we took the rest to a local charity that collects toys at christmas that I cannot remember the name of (I'm pretty they're listed in the phone book like that). Anyhow, you could see on his face as we carried toys in for about 20 minutes he wasn't totally convinced that this was a good idea. He has since caught on - he and his sisters are very generous now. I'm nearly broke from a recent can drive at school. They insisted on about 6 cans a days for two weeks. I'm enjoying and appreciating the swim discussion. Keep it coming.
It's great to hear that you son got into the giving spirit. It nice when something like that happens. You can see that there is still a lot of good on the world. |

Steve Congratulations on the fast run! Yay!! I did a little experiment this fall where I ran 30 days in a row, minimum of 20 minutes. I was amazed pretty far into it how great I felt in general -- the consistency really showed in my performance on days when I opted to push it. Every run was what I felt like when I was out there, so I was often changing plans because some days I'd plan longer or faster and wouldn't be feeling it so I'd make it short. Other days, vice versa. Anyway, listen to your body and be careful not to ramp up too fast. Sounds like you are smart. And such a great reminder of children's laughter. My kids have been manic today and had me totally on the edge. But I'll take the loud and out-of-control laughter over fighting any day (or so I tell myself). I'm always taken back to my childhood when they act so crazy, remembering how insane my parents would be with my sister's and my manic energy... I get it now!! |

While I am not anal about it I check mine about once or twice per run. I have been working for almost a year on some Chi Running techniques and to become more of a mid-foot striker. When I was heel striking my rate was about 78-84 depending on the speed. Now I try to keep it in the 86-92 area....For information- I am 6'4" and currently run about a 10 minute mile. One thing I know is that when the rate is in the 88 range I am very comfortable and feel very strong. Just my .02 worth. Steve Edited by Reno8 2009-12-22 7:44 PM |

I feel really good in the 88-90, the way my coach has me keep track is counting how many foot strikes per 20 sec every 30 minutes or so, just check it. As long as I am at 29-30/20 sec, I am much "lighter" on my feet...heel striker by nature, I, too, have tried to stay more conscious of a more midfoot strike (doesn't always work) and at that cadence, I feel there is much less pounding. No recurrence of my old plantar fasciitis during marathon training or marathon... combined with proactively performing religious foam rolling and trigger point therapy. I'm a lot shorter than Steve ... like 14 inches! and a little bit lighter due to my shrimp status. Not sure that that matters as much as the lighter step for less pounding. I do find that keeping track of cadence helps keep my pace up without a big increase in effort. |
