Hiya Manatees!  I am back from visiting my family in Wisconsin and got back today.  Sorry for the radio silence. We decided to try computer-free travel.  I did some FB updates, but that's about it.  Sadly, no running. I got a cold and spent most of the week sick.  That and the cold weather seemed like a disaster for my lungs.  Going to run tomorrow, though. Temps here are in the 40s, and it feels downright balmy!

Not like I have been NO WAY NOT LIKE I HAVE BEEN NOT THIS TIME NO NO NO

I think the post-IM, post-crazy holidays "depression" was me getting sick; I just didn't notice the particulars until a low fever set in yesterday which has been spiking high today.

It's okay, the brief periods of feeling okay are quickly taken over by the WORST HEADACHE EVER or another fever spell. I'm very tired and need to rest but feel terribly restless. But I'm in bed, anyway.

Also, I'm not feeling run-over sick (yet) and really do not want to go there / put myself there (indeed, some old dogs CAN learn new tricks). Not having any respiratory or horrible-GI symptoms (I'd call 'em mild GI symptoms), so that's good. I really hope it isn't one of my teeth again, in hiding waiting to blow up.

Yanti, been thinking about you today, you haven't ended up really sick again have you?

Asalzwed - 2013-01-05 2:00 PM Also Chad, if I decide to pursue triathlon I might steal your expertise. If you are willing. I'd make it worth your while.

That can be taken many different ways... LOL  Wink

And yes, I would be interested...I love teaching / coaching... I give swim lessons on the side and wish I could do it or coaching for a living.

can't you? My coach does well he has between 20-60 at each squad at my pool and OWS. That's eight sessions a week minimum twenty people at $6 each - it's good money!

Hey Manatees can't sleep due to time zone change gotta love that! Also stressing about IM!!! Original Manatees you know of my cycling phobia new manatees welcome! I am a triathlete who just cannot ride!! I can put in hours and hours on the drainer but road riding just a cold sweat! Not really asking advice though its always welcome! I've got eleven weeks til IM so serious hours on the drainer coming up I figure all time in the saddle is worthwhile. Can I do IM with this plus minimal riding around a local track? I did my HIM on that alone and it was fine not pretty as I didn't have nearly enough hours in the saddle and wasn't used to steep climbs. Melbourne not hilly no reason to stop (my big hang up) but I need handling skills to eat and drink comfortably. I'm gonna wear a camelpak and two bottles on the bike unless its 100F that will be fine. Aero bars - can I complete IM without I did HIM without and not uncomfortable except wear and tear on nether regions!!! Thoughts manatees. I've got this far I don't wanna pull out. I want to learn to love my bike

8.35 mile run yesterday. I feel great about my effort, my pace, and how good I felt after. My heart rate was a little elevated this morning, well, at 82, quite a bit elevated, so I am going to take it really easy today. A one mile run and an easy 30 minutes on the trainer. I'm playing Blokus with my 6 year old this morning. I hope everyone has a great day.

Dear, dear Jo. GET OUTSIDE!!!!!! Can you schedule more time with your bike coach? You were doing so well after you saw him!

Many triathletes do most of their bike training on the drainer but they will also say that handling skills suffer. When your handlling skills are already, um, uncomfortable, then you REALLY need to ride outside some. Get outside for at least part of your long rides if you can get away. (I can't imagine doing my long rides on a drainer, ugh). What if Melbourne throws some weather related issues at you? You need to have a solid comfort on the bike so that you can handle unexpected issues.

As for aero, I think the main benefit loss is time savings. If you're not worried about that then I wouldn't worry about aero. Besides, that brings a whole new set of handling challenges Laughing

hey thanks! Yes Piglet Coach Mark will be reinstated around 25th jan I figure Friday afternoons straight after work every Friday until March! I know I got a huge confidence boost when I saw him last. I will call him tomorrow. Also need another fit on the bike as Mark said my seats a little high! Aero I don't think it's gonna make enough difference just make me more stressed! Thanks so much for the words of wisdom. I knew the manatees would make me feel better

One hell of a trip - hope the little one gets better soon.

I would say forget aero.  I have a tri bike - it was my first tri bike ever, and my first good bike in a long time (20 years)... the first time I tried to ride aero, it was a sight to see!  I'm not afraid of my bike or riding (I love doing it) and I love to go super fast, but at about 40 - 45 mph I always come out of aero and get on the horns anyways... Aero just doesn't feel as stable as the horns do.

I would suspect aero would be scary for you.

That's it...that's all I can offer.. Have fun - I'll be here on the other side of the world rooting for you to find a love of the bike.

Great to hear from everyone, will try to get back to folks' questions and individual inspires ASAP--thank you all for being such great Manatees, everything gets covered anyway (perhaps in even more detail than desired LOL)

I'm still struggling with health, feel like I've been run over by a truck (well, I've been hit by one, just not run over but I bet it feels this way). Truly just stayed in bed all day, am in bed now. *MAY* attempt an easy swim tomorrow based on how I feel.

Thanks Stacey for the concern and everyone who checked in on my blog.

For the folks who've been around a while, this isn't serious--doesn't have that Grim Reaper feeling, but it just sucks.

For the newer Manatees, I'm Typhoid Mary, except I get sick too. Heh. Not so funny ... 20 serious (not counting the not serious! Is there a calculator available for that?) illnesses/injuries/infections in the space of 2.5 years. I plan to keep that at 20.

Off to zzzzzzzz

it's much appreciated without BT I'd have given up a while ago and stuck to running! My aim is to find an average speed of 25kph to 'get me through' IM that's all I want

1 week into training for Big Sur and I am melting down already.  I forgot how hard it is to train when you are a blob who has done nothing in a long time.  This has been the longest I have gone "out of shape" in my adult life (at least in the past 18 years since I started running).  I feel like I am starting from nothing.  It seems like a totally different body than one that has run 6 marathons in the past, and just PR'd in 4/12 at Big Sur.

I am struggling and a traditional marathon plan seems overwhelming right now (Hanson's is not bad right now but I feel like even that is too much and Higdon's, with the long run is very overwhelming).

What do you all think of this:

4 days a week running-starting at 30 min (3 days) and 1 hour for the long run building to 60 min (3 days) and 4 hour long run

2 days a week doing 1 hour crosstraining moderately hard(Tuesday) and one as active recovery (Sunday)

Squats and lunges daily.

I am thinking of training to minutes only, not mileage.  Should I try to pace to a HR monitor and build this plan with some zone work in it, letting my HR set the pace?

This is new territory but when I think miles I am feeling way too overwhelmed.  I may drop to a lesser race (21 mile, 10.9 or 9 mile option).  Ultimately, I would like to start the marathon (and finish) and make it to the 22 mile mark (which has a sag bus for those that don't make the cut off).  That way I would still do at least the 21 mile but get to run on the best part of the Big Sur course, not the 21 mile course which does not run the Highway 1 area of Big Sur.

What do you think of my minutes/HR plan?

I will be incorporating a basically meatless diet and hydration and sleep into my plan.

Jo, I cannot really comment on your plan as I am still too new to this.  That being said, I think whatever will help you feel less overwhelmed is the way to go.  Start slow and just look at the run that is in front of you, not the whole 16 (or whatever) week plan.  Your fitness will come back quickly.  You can do it!

Still trying to decide between two Half Iron Races...

Pros to Oliver

1 swim loop, 2 bike, 2 run (I don't love loops)

Little holiday and visit with friends

3 weeks before HM

Cons to Oliver

Have to travel

June 2nd (enough time given recent injury?)

Pros to Vancouver

25-40$ cheaper

No travel required

July 14th--more time to prep

Cons to Vancouver

No holiday/visit with friends

2 swim loops, 4 bike loops (with a b!tch of a hill at the start of each lap), 2 run loops (did I mention I don't love loops?)

3 weeks after HM

WWMD? (What Would Manatees Do?)

Kirsten, with the achilles challenges you have been having, my thought would be to give as much time to healing as you could. So, given that I want to heal up and I am cheap, Vancouver wins in my book. The HM would give you a good idea where you are in your training as well.

Good job!!! Cool how it all came together, pace, effort, etc.

jobaxas - 2013-01-06 7:52 AM Hey Manatees can't sleep due to time zone change gotta love that!

Jo, I second the coach sentiment. You were a cycling mama when you got a few sessions under your belt.

I can't tell Mr. Hershey how to make chocolate, he's been at it a bit longer then me. And I can't tell you what training plan to do, you have done way more running then I.  However, Kirsten mentioned it and I second it. Break the training down into increments. One week at a time. And trust that your past training and races will help you mentally get through it as well.

Joanne, you are a running rockstar! Have faith in you!!!!!
