Thank you for the advice! I will avoid it, along with Sea cucumbers, bird's nest soup, shark fin soup and Century eggs. :-D
I agree about beets and caffeine though! And carbohydrates, best type of fuel there is!

My swim tonight made me want to eat the kitchen. After reading this, not so much!

Funny thing. Swimming makes me hungry. I just thought I was weird that way.
Me too. I could eat the crutch out of a low flying duck most days after I'm done in the pool.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. We're all good. Fortunately this time the bad guys were idiots, didn't wreak widespread havoc, and got themselves killed.

Really heartbreaking about the cops and bystander, though.

By and large Jakarta is actually really safe! (Except for the traffic and pollution--that'll kill you pretty fast)

Bad news, I didn't have any dry clothes to change into after and got a little hypothermia. I know, you would think someone who runs in all this snow and weather would never have that happen! I was standing there waiting for the bus, totally drenched and in shorts, shaking violently. A man even stopped to ask if I needed a blanket! I probably should have taken him up on that. The bus came and it was much better on the bus but then I had a short jog from the bus stop to home and it really hit me. I got really disoriented and couldn't stop shaking.

I'm ok now though, lesson learned!

I'm glad that the new group seems good. Casual can be good.  It doesn't have to mean *easy.*I don't think that we'll have to remind you to bring dry gear in the future :-(  I hate that shivery feeling.  On the plus side, 1.5 more hours a week to play rather than commute! Woo hoo!

I was just over in Strava.  We are a busy bunch!

As a reminder, be sure to follow each other.  The easiest way to do that is to go to the Manatee group (https://www.strava.com/clubs/manatees) and click each individual in the Athletes list and then click Follow in the upper right of their profiles.

so question about strava cause I've never even looked at it. Can you make so it isn't totally open? I guess what I mean is if I started to use it can I make it so only the Manatee group can see it? I'm wandering if using it might motivate me to train outside more often (or let's face it just train!).

Yes.  Both Connor and I are set up so that people have to Request to Follow.  I also have a few privacy blocks set up so that my home address and work address are kind of obscured on the maps.  Ben mentioned that adding surrounding addresses can further obscure it.

Just to be clear, Strava is not at all a requirement of the group.  I find it to be a nice way to see who is and isn't being active.  I can see that maybe Sean isn't talking much here because he's been on his bike all the time, etc. or notice that Robin K is killing it in the pool (again).  The talk and the workout details and such are all here so if you don't Strava with us, it's all good.

Whereas I'm just biding time with elliptical usage. Not something I've put on Strava.

Also know that you can filter between groups and those you follow on the Activity Feed (drop down list selects what group) and also under each of the Groups you are a part of (Recent Activity). I follow people there as part of the groups that I haven't specifically selected to Follow.

I have never used a forum so I have no idea how any of this works but here is my bio.

    *****

    NAME: Kingsley

STORY: I was a competitive swimmer for 19 years until October 2000. Then I got fat then skinny... for a few years before taking up open water swimming. That led to meeting Yanti and her infecting me with the triathlon virus.

    FAMILY STATUS: Married to Yanti

CURRENT TRAINING: Barely training at all. I need to get my motivation and self discipline sorted out.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: An Olympic late January at Busselton Australia, the 20km Rottnest channel swim in February, an Olympic at Sungailiat Indonesia in late April, 70.3 Vietnam and maybe IM Malaysia in November.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I have a good idea about how to train for swimming but know nothing about cycling or running so the chance to learn something is good.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I have a reasonably extensive sporting background and I'm happy to share my experience with others about training if only as an example of how *not* to train.

Wagged work and took my mum and my sister shoe shopping this afternoon. They scored some decent bargains in the new year sales so then they decided they needed running clothes. They are now all fired up to start training for the half marathon.

Most of these types of apps and such have pretty good privacy features. It may take a bit of hunting to get the settings sorted out on some of them.  BT is pretty good about privacy, Strava has some nice settings that you can take advantage of as well. Like Ben and Janyne said, you can hide some of where you are with a little planning.  I follow a couple of pros on Strava as well, because it is kinda cool to see what they are posting.  I figure if these are the workouts they post, I can only imagine what they aren't sharing.

    Morning Pod!

Yanti - so glad to hear your friends/fam are safe.

Kinsgley - welcome! How have you not been an official Manatee yet?

For my update...sounds like I'm the big winner out of the group. $7! Read em and weep guys...I'm headed to 7-Eleven for a chocolate milk and the jumbo bag of pizzeria Combos.

And now for my training question: so I've been plugging away since spring building up from nothing, and doing quite well with it. Starting soon here I'll be switching to a real training plan! Nothing fancy, just the BT 3x Sprint 16 week one. I like that the run and cycle volume build up so gently, which is what I need. But my swimming is a bit beyond that particular plan. Can I get some suggestions of how I should ramp up my swimming from where it is now to an eventual 1500m swim at the end of the season? My logs are up to date if that helps anyone with tips. My concern is that while I can swim a pretty decent sized workout now, I don't really get how that translates to swimming the full distance nonstop, and need some confidence and planning help.

    Thanks!!

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
