Kirsten, with the achilles challenges you have been having, my thought would be to give as much time to healing as you could. So, given that I want to heal up and I am cheap, Vancouver wins in my book. The HM would give you a good idea where you are in your training as well. Thanks for the replies, guys. My achilles was uncrunchy/uncreaky since Friday afternoon, so I did a couple (3 really) eccentric drops just to see, and I could feel it creaking a bit. So, I don't think there is any way I will be ready June 2. Honestly, I am cheap too, so Vancouver is probably the better option, but you know, if someone tells me I can't do Option B, it's the one I really want to do... I got up early this am and went to the pool. I wanted to make sure I hadn't forgotten how to swim (Haven't been since Dec 14) as masters starts back up tomorrow. I just did 1000m, but felt ok. I then did 30 min of aquajogging. Going to do a ride on the drainer later. Happy Sunday everyone! |

![]() | ![]() jogo - 2013-01-06 12:12 PM Well, several things come to mind. The first being that a marathon plan should be started with a base. It's REALLY difficult to go from zero to marathon, even with an 18 week plan. Not sure if that's what you are doing or not. Second, If you are already overwhelmed i don't think you should be investing so much time in cross training (since your tuns are only starting at 30 minutes) or squats and lunges (personally I can't do much for leg strength exercises when I'm running a lot, let alone every day.) But of course it all depends on your goals. I think it's fine to train with time instead of miles though, just don't cheat yourself. 1 week into training for Big Sur and I am melting down already. I forgot how hard it is to train when you are a blob who has done nothing in a long time. This has been the longest I have gone "out of shape" in my adult life (at least in the past 18 years since I started running). I feel like I am starting from nothing. It seems like a totally different body than one that has run 6 marathons in the past, and just PR'd in 4/12 at Big Sur.
What do you all think of this: 4 days a week running-starting at 30 min (3 days) and 1 hour for the long run building to 60 min (3 days) and 4 hour long run 2 days a week doing 1 hour crosstraining moderately hard(Tuesday) and one as active recovery (Sunday) Squats and lunges daily. I am thinking of training to minutes only, not mileage. Should I try to pace to a HR monitor and build this plan with some zone work in it, letting my HR set the pace? This is new territory but when I think miles I am feeling way too overwhelmed. I may drop to a lesser race (21 mile, 10.9 or 9 mile option). Ultimately, I would like to start the marathon (and finish) and make it to the 22 mile mark (which has a sag bus for those that don't make the cut off). That way I would still do at least the 21 mile but get to run on the best part of the Big Sur course, not the 21 mile course which does not run the Highway 1 area of Big Sur. What do you think of my minutes/HR plan? I will be incorporating a basically meatless diet and hydration and sleep into my plan. |

What do you think of my minutes/HR plan? I will be incorporating a basically meatless diet and hydration and sleep into my plan. Salty, I am totally going from 0 to marathon and I have 16 weeks. However, as one of my trainer friends told me, I can't call it couch to marathon because I have 6 marathons under my belt (4 since 8/11). I am hoping for some muscle memory. The Hanson's plan starts out with 10-15 miles per week and increases to 60mpw. It is an 18 week plan. Crosstraining is NOT part of their plan. They run you 6 times/week after the 1st 5 weeks (only 3, 4, 5 times/wk to start). They don't believe that crosstraining is benefitial to marathon training except for active recovery. I guess you are right about it not being enough. I will just stick with what I am doing. I love the idea of just going from week to week and not looking ahead. I think that is what freaks me out the most. I am quite realistic, as I was last year, that this goal might be too lofty. However, I was able to pull it off and PR last year even with my minimal training (remember calf issues and pneumonia, along with my daughter being in the ICU). I am going to beg that the manatees keep me on track and when I start to doubt myself that you guys remind me to have faith in myself. I hope that you all call me out if I am slacking. I will try hard not to cheat myself. Thanks for the reminder!! |

I remember doing Jeff Galloway's plan and thinking no effing way! But I did it about 40lbs heavier than now. I know how challenging it is feeling unhappy with your body but just train as it says and eat healthily you'll get there. Cross training I'd leave it.Asalzwed - 2013-01-06 2:55 PM jogo - 2013-01-06 12:12 PM Well, several things come to mind. The first being that a marathon plan should be started with a base. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jobaxas - 2013-01-07 1:26 AM Hey Jo is riding on a bike track an option to start with? I don't know if Melbourne has them to the same extent as Perth does, but it might be good way to get outside and practice the handling without the added stress of the traffic. If you could go at a less busy time, like not early in the morning when all the walkers are out, it might be easier. Muskrat37 - 2013-01-07 3:57 AM it's much appreciated without BT I'd have given up a while ago and stuck to running! My aim is to find an average speed of 25kph to 'get me through' IM that's all I wantjobaxas - 2013-01-06 6:52 AM Hey Manatees can't sleep due to time zone change gotta love that! Also stressing about IM!!! Original Manatees you know of my cycling phobia new manatees welcome! I am a triathlete who just cannot ride!! I can put in hours and hours on the drainer but road riding just a cold sweat! Not really asking advice though its always welcome! I've got eleven weeks til IM so serious hours on the drainer coming up I figure all time in the saddle is worthwhile. Can I do IM with this plus minimal riding around a local track? I did my HIM on that alone and it was fine not pretty as I didn't have nearly enough hours in the saddle and wasn't used to steep climbs. Melbourne not hilly no reason to stop (my big hang up) but I need handling skills to eat and drink comfortably. I'm gonna wear a camelpak and two bottles on the bike unless its 100F that will be fine. Aero bars - can I complete IM without I did HIM without and not uncomfortable except wear and tear on nether regions!!! Thoughts manatees. I've got this far I don't wanna pull out. I want to learn to love my bike One hell of a trip - hope the little one gets better soon. I would say forget aero. I have a tri bike - it was my first tri bike ever, and my first good bike in a long time (20 years)... the first time I tried to ride aero, it was a sight to see! I'm not afraid of my bike or riding (I love doing it) and I love to go super fast, but at about 40 - 45 mph I always come out of aero and get on the horns anyways... Aero just doesn't feel as stable as the horns do. I would suspect aero would be scary for you. That's it...that's all I can offer.. Mind you if the weather in Melbourne is anything like it has been here then I would stay inside in the aircon. |

Instead I text DH and asked him to pick me up a SBux and went inside for a warm chai. I'm not worthy. :'( |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Question for the bike smarties. I have an old rim driven Minoura trainer. I have no idea what the model is, so when I set things up on trainerroad, I just picked a trainer from the list of the same make and type (ie a Minoura RDA). I have noticed that at lower powers, I am very steady, but once I get up near my FTP, the power bounces around a ton. I'm wondering if this is a common thing with less experienced cyclists or is it a function of the fact that I don't have the correct trainer setup? |

I guess I'm not worthy either and should be booted from the group too! |

I know that my power at higher levels bounces around a little. i also know that my "stroke" is not even and I am sure that it bounces because of my stroke. I have the correct trainer setup in TR and everything, so I would lean more towards the difference in pedal stroke. Remember to try to have even pressure all of the way around the stroke. Do not try to push down, but more of push out of the front, and scrape back. I will see if I can find the link that talks about pedal stroke and evening it up and making it more efficient. |

What's your name on trainer road, so I can look at the ride you just did to see how much the power was jumping around. As for setting it up for a specific model, it is important because each model has a unique power/speed curve ratio, so I would imagine it can screw with the power output as speed increases. You should pose the question to Nate on trainer roads forum/support, he's usually really quick at getting back to you. Have you thought about putting a couple of pics up of the trainer on the main forum to see if someone can identify which model is on there. Sorry I haven't been on for a while peeps, been hectic in work, and a full(ish) training schedule, but I have been lurking ![]() ![]() |
