Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Hey all. I've been largely off the board for a bit over a week, but am back (and catching up). A week with very little data and essentially no phone was, well… AWESOME! Can feel a little buried on return, but worth it. Was tough to get the workouts in, even with it being a scheduled rest week. Managed decent run volume (and ALL of it was straight up and down, most of it with the Better Half and a lot accompanied by green vervet monkeys - seriously) and some good swims in the salt (with my kids and turtles and rays and such). So, no complaints - until I hit the trainer again tonight! Congrats on the racing - awesome run and bike work! Fred, congrats on your daughter's swimming (my Meghan has championships in 2 weeks - so much fun, and I'll be on the deck, too). OK - gotta go dig out from about eleventy-three other piles, but good to be back! Matt |

Master 2621 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by axteraa Congratulations Arend! Great job on improvement on a tough course. 1:33:40 for my Half Marathon this morning, about a 4:30 improvement over last year. The lack of any hard runs in the last few months resulted in some pretty good suffering for the last 5-6 Kms. The hills on the second loop absolutely punished me but I was able to (mostly) maintain my pace for the whole race. Pretty happy with the result! The bottoms of my feet feel like hamburger. |

Master 2621 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by Jason N Congratulations Jason on the Makaha TT! That is pretty impressive.I did the Makaha TT 2 or 3 times in the mid 80's. I don't remember any stats, but I know I did well. I wonder if they have the stats for back then.First TT in the books. Overall a good showing with small room for improvements.http://www.strava.com/activities/115624799/overview 10 miles Good enough for 8th overall and 2nd in the Men 18-34 Cat 4/5. I placed right about where I thought I would given the competition. Winning time was 21:4X. First half was 296 AP and second half was 297 AP, the turn around was 0 watts for 9 seconds which brought my AP down to 294. I was closer to 291 AP at the 3/4 point, but had enough left in the tank (too much) and pushed it up to 294 by averaging 336 for the last 2 minutes. I've got another TT next weekend...likely about 1.5-2 minutes longer in duration, but I should be able to squeeze out 300 I think. It's point to point, so I don't lose any watts as there is no turn around. |

Elite 3779 Ontario | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by Fred D Awesome work Arend and Jason! I was at a swim meet all weekend. Megan went 2:38.96 for the 200 free, which I'm pleased with as it was the 8/9 the event she swam this weekend. Funny, my legs are fried from standing on the pool deck all weekend as a timer lol. Wow, what an amazing time for her age. Out of curiosity, how much do your kids swim at the moment? |

Seattle | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by Fred D Originally posted by AsalzwedWorked on execution today in my 15k. The course was very hilly but, other than a few snow fluries, it remained dry. The plan was to go out easy for the first two miles then bring down the pace for the rest to bring the average down to 6:38 pace. I think I went a little too easy and ended up with a 6:40 average. I got the OA women's win but am conflicted as to wether or not I'm happy with the run. After all, I didn't quite execute perfectly. I did a long CD to make it a complete workout. . You won and you aren't happy. That sounds eerily like me.... Ha! Well, winning is a great consolation but it wasn't the goal. I decided I'm happy with the run though

I know bike racing used to be a lot bigger in Hawaii, but it's good to see that a race like this can survive. Our club currently puts it on, but we alternate locations between Makaha and Mokuleia each year. We got 126 people to register this year...our biggest total since I joined the club about 4 years ago. We're usually pretty happy to get 80 or more, but I've heard stories where they would consistently get 150 plus. We had a lot of first timers out there...either solid triathletes taking their first dip into TTs or just new fitness and bike clubs that are encouraging their members to come out. Either way, we were really happy with how the race went. Edited by Jason N 2014-02-24 1:10 PM |

Nice job to the rest of the racers! Sounds like lots of improving is happening here! Agree 100% very exciting to be part of a group that never rests and doesn't believe in an "off" season. Congrats to Salty, Jason, Chris, and even honorary SBR Utopian Megan! I am bringing up the rear with 1:45:01 trail HM on Saturday, which was :14 per mile faster than my time last year (which I did not think I would break on this particular course - it is a tough one. Went out a little faster than I intended but settled in to the plan very quickly and executed almost perfectly, so very happy with the results. Last year I managed to grab a 2nd AG, but this year with a much better time I got bumped to 4th by 3 darn "kids" that aged up. Just puts a fine point on our discussion last week about goal setting. Congratulations again to everyone - it really is motivational to be in your company (and to know you are watching). And I for one can't wait to see what Salty does in an actual "A" race! |

I did run across an old USCF rule book and it had a licenses stuffed inside. USCF was before USA cycling. Some of the other cycling races I can remember are; Kahuka Team TT, North Shore RR, Dick Evens RR, Honolulu Crit Series, Like Like TT, Pali RR or TT, and Tantalus TT off the top of my head. There was some Crits in an industrial park between Mililani and Perl City. I think Waipio? I did a LOT of Crits overall.

I stayed an unaffiliated racer my first two years then I joined a team. The two teams I was on; Wahiawa Bike Shop and McCully Bike Shop. Wahiawa team really did work out but McCully’s was pretty good. The Bike Shop had the best team mid 80’s.

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by BrotherTri Good question, James - probably a 1:33:39. Wait, what was Arend's time again......?Honestly hard to say, but based on my current road paces I am guessing 1:31~1:32 - I am just not sure these legs have sub 1:30 left in them any more. It would really depend on the course (of course) - it would need to be a little rolly as I historically do not do so good on flat courses (just don't run the flats enough and all the repetition just hammers my legs). I do think I am reasonably good at running hills & trails - these kinds of races alway expose how upside down many folks run hills. At the 5k mark I was 62 OA male but finished 31st OA male (the top 2 women also finished in front of me). It is crazy to see how folks hammer the ups and then desperately try and recover on the downs. On these longer races I try and run just like I ride with a low VI, so wind up yoyo-ing runners in front a couple of times before they are gone off the back. I think if we ever get running power meters a lot of folks would run hills VERY different and to much better success.Originally posted by TankBoy Agree 100% very exciting to be part of a group that never rests and doesn't believe in an "off" season. Wow...that's so cool. I currently race for McCully's team who are offically called Cambiamento D' Andaturo. That's the roadie side of it, but McCully also is affiliated with a Tri group called Team Core. So we're generally referred to as Cambio Core Hawaii as one team, and our USAC team licensing is also referenced that way currently. I train with both groups, as do a handful of others, and we all help each other out for putting on races. Dick Evans and Tantalus TT are still around, and there still is a 40k TT in the Kahuku area, but it's called the Malaekahana 40k. The only other races we have now are the Castle to Hanauma TT, Olomana RR and Pineapple Hill RR. We have a new Pinapple Hill "Sprint" RR coming up which is just one time up Pinapple Hill and a sprint finish on the flats into Wahaiwa. Wahiawa Bike Shop no longer exists, and The Bike Shop is still going strong. A lot has changed since you left as far as residential and business development...as well as increased traffic...so finding roads to close for races are harder and harder to come by. |

Yeahhh, that's always hard to say in terms of trail vs road times. I just keep them separate, because really, they are very different styles of racing. Same with XC/track/road. It's all different.
Are you saying you try and run hills at the same effort up and down? |

Seems to be mostly resolved. Can't explain it but not complaining. These days, I try to take every day tht is injury free as a win, because I know it won't last. Been using Hokas for my weekday running. Also dropping some vacation weight, came back last week at 196 and this morning was 192. Want to race at 185, like last year. |

I don't seem to be having any issues, so can't really explain the post 10K flareup. But the Hokas seem to help, altho I think I need to size down a bit. I've read they are either true to size or require slightly bigger, seems I need to downsize 1/2 size in the bondi 3s |
