Whats up gang?

I am officially being sorry this week.  Haven't done a thing and probably won't until the 5k thursday morning.  My IT band has put me on the sidelines this week.  Probably hurt my spirit more than anything, but it just hasn't been a good week for the bike and I obviously havent been running.  Hopefully a little rest will do it good and next week I can get back at it.

Been stretching and rolling the ITB so hopefully it will help.

I hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving weekend.  Be SAFE out there!

Hey Barry--Hang in there!  I spent about a week feeling sorry for myself and moping around until SJ kicked me in the rear end.  Told me that staying mentally positive was important to healing.  So even though I am still on the running sidelines, I am focusing on some of the cool things I get to do--fun VO2/LT rides on my CT and new swim workouts.  Believe it or not, it's helping.   My RHR is the lowest it has been since May and my biking is getting better.  Good stuff in the grand scheme of things.  When will I get to run again? Not sure.  I miss it, but eventually it will come back to me.

Tony--you are scaring me with all this preplanning.  I'm not even thinking about Lonestar and tumbleweeds and whales in the water (or it is sharks? can never remember).

Today is the start of my holiday cooking..off to get the bird this morning and then mess up the kitchen for the next two days!

haha not that much planning yet, just I have been looking at new front wheels and I know how the tri-spoke works around here but wasn't sure about in windy texas so didn't want to get something I couldn't use there.

Well I went running this AM with my new coach. We ran in Umstead Park, which for those of you not familiar with the area is like 5500 acres of parkland with miles of trails. Unfortanately none of it is flat. Man here I am breathing hard up the hills and he seems to be able to carry on a regular conversation. Near the end, going up a lon hill, I had to tell myself that hills are my friends. this is going to be an interesting 4 months until my marathon.

I am glad there is a shower in the bulding I work in otherwise I am not sure how I would get this to work as Marty lives in Cary, near my work, but Ilive 21 miles away. He also said it would be ok to enter the Nations olympic tri in DC which is 2 weeks before my A race: Augusta 1/2 IM. i am working on my schedule. Only one of the two companies that put on events in NC had released their schedule. The other company wont release theirs until 12/1. That company puts on 2 of the races I did last year that I want to do again.

Barry hang in there.... It is not going to hurt you to take some time off.  You will come back stronger than before..... Just get better!  Otherwise next season (WHICH IS A LONG TIME AWAY) is going to suck because you will constantly be battling these nagging injuries.  It is harder on you mentally than it is physically.

Hang in there Barry. I've been sidelined with you and like Suzy said, am focusing on the positive. We've all worked very hard this past season and now it is time to take care of our bodies.  Lets put our feet up, enjoy the holidays and heal. Then we'll go get em even stronger than before in 2010!!

Just one more "Hang in there, Barry!!!"

You will be up and running in no time as long as you take the time to heal...great to see you rolling and stretching in the meantime.

Last night, I had another Taper dream...in this one, Tony and Sam, who I've only seen in their avatars were my muddy buddies and in a running/slogging race...this was a much less frustrating dream than the night before when I had to back my truck up into a dead end... because the three of us were actually leading the race!    I might have to re-dream that one to see how we did!

OKAY ALREADY!    I didn't say I was quitting.  lol

Really, thanks for the hang in theres.  I am going to run a little 5k with my sis in law and nephew on Thanksgiving, so I will give it a try then and see how it does.  I am really not that down, just a little lazy this week with lack of focus, since running was going to be my focus.  Guess I'll have to get back in the pool strong since I have totally been ignoring that.

Thanks again peeps and have a good holiday.

Have you ever tried the fist exercise? Basically swim laps with your fist, not open handed. This exercise makes you really pay attention to when you break/make your arm vertical or you basically don't move that efficiently. It highlights how important the arm is in the pull (especially the forearm) and once you get good at it you can really feel the pull. Every time i swim i do it with a swim buoy between my legs and combine it with the delayed recovery exercise for 400-800 yrds. It tremendously improved my swim time and efficiency, 8-9 arm strokes per 20 yrds for 800 yrds (without the buoy).

The fist is a great idea!  See, I knew someone would come up with something to help me.  I'll give it a try today.  What is the delayed recovery exercise?

I would also love your 8-9 arm strokes per  25 yards.  I am supposed to start counting mine and dare I say they are more than double yours? I gotta lot of work to do.  Or maybe I should just get a lot taller and learn to push off the wall in a streamline position!

It's Wednesday!  I am going to shake things up a bit...today is usually the day I compile the things I am most thankful for this year.  Want to share some of yours? race details welcome too.......

Here are mine:

1. A solid releationship with my 86 year old mom.  It is amazing what putting a manic depressive parent on the right medication can do for quality of life for the family.  I only wish it happened sooner as her health continues to fail.
2. My friendship with the SWBKRUN crazies, especially Kim who feels like a sister to me and we haven't even met.
3. The man's new job that has made him a much better person to be around. Can't beat being happy in life.
4. My coach who has not only taught me how to be a better more confident swimmer, but also understand the importance of recovery to the whole triathlon experience.
5. My BFF Diane got married to a great man for the first time at the age of 45 years old.  Couldn't be happier for her.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but when I used to teach, I used to have my students concentrate on their first two fingers entering the water first (index and middle finger).  This should keep your elbow high and bent.  If the palm of your hand hits the water first, it's easy for your elbow to drop.  Like I said, not exactly sure if that is what you are asking,  but hopefully it might help.

closed fist drills are great.  I second everything Stan said.  Also don't get too caught up in achieving a low number of strokes per length.  I've discovered that if I get a strong push off or not I can drop 5 strokes, but to me that doesn't really matter. Unless you are doing pool swims during your race a strong push off does nothing for you in open water. Therefore a stroke count doesn't tell you that much.  It is a good tool for measuring efficiency but don't worry too much about the overall number.

I am also a big fan of FINIS Freestyle swim paddles. They are specifically designed for freestyle but have taught me a lot about high elbow, fingertip and hand positioning when entering the water, and how to recognize a strong pull under the water.

SSMinnow - 2009-11-25 6:39 AM It's Wednesday!

1. I am thankful for having a wonderful wife and 2 gret kids
2. Having healthy and local parents and relatives who seem to love watching our kids.
3. My "internet" friends here.
4. Did I mention my wonderful wife who buys her husband nice race wheels for x-mas? ; )

Ya know I thought the first line sounded a little fishy!
