cmsklein - 2010-12-15 6:05 PM i have a quick question for those who have done IMCDA before...How easy/hard is it for family and friends to track you as you progress though the race?  Can it be done by lap top, or is there some other ways to do this?
I have three kids and the 2 year old has the attention span of a.... two year old, and mimics Houdini every chance she gets.   I am having nightmares about my wife trying to entertain the kids for 11-12 hours.

You sound like an ideal candidate for: http://www.myathletegps.com/

They are at every ironman I believe.  Reserve in advance.

CdA is a spectator friendly course because of it's multi-loop format and the way it goes through town... so your family will have plenty of opportunity to see you, but that device will let them know when (approximately) you'll be coming through.  I've never used it but feedback has been positive from those I know that have.

Also--while not dealing with tracking--there is an AMAZING and HUGE jungle gym/kids play area in the park where the transition area is set up, so it'd be easy to have the kids there for some of the time you're on the bike and run.  It truly is an awesome playground--makes me wish I was 6 again and could play on it!

You will just have to play on it before IM, but don't get too tired

To JK and TMPG thank you so much for the info.  The playground news was music to my wife's ears, and I will definitely look into the gps website.  Slainte.

Ok so my wife and I have been trying to have a second child for about 2 years now with no luck.  I am all signed up and have been building a base for my CdA training and to our very happy surprise we finally found out that my wife is pregnant.  We couldn't be more happy, except we found out that the baby is due the second week of July.  Yup two weeks after CdA.  Needless to say my wife is definately not going to be able to make it CdA and don't know what to do.  She is definately having a scheduled C-Section but I still don't know if I should chance it.  Best case scenario for me is fly out as late as possible on Friday and come home early Monday morning.  That may be my only option if I am able to do it at all.  As of right now I am going to stick with my training program and see what happens.  Just thought I would share the news....Happy training and hope to see you guys all there

Congratulations on the great news, Ryan! I'm sure you'll figure out how to handle the race once you've had some more time to let things sink in.

Congratulations! Enjoy this exciting time.  Life events always make these triathlon plans pretty interesting. I think you're right to stick with the plan for now.  There is lots of time between now and then and I'm guessing the right course will become more clear, one way or the other, as you get closer to June.

I am really pleased that you two are pregnant! Congrats Galas2. I wasn't sure if this was going to be your first IM. Its hard to imagine you not being around your wife under those circumstances as you know what childbirthing time is like. Also to not have your sherpa and to try and rush the weekend may be tough.

Have you considered others IM options or different plans so that you can be there for her? Not trying to lay a guilt trip, but just seeing what your thoughts are.

We took the advice of a friend last year and I gave my husband a pass for the bike leg (kids older, 7 and 9, but a long day for anyone spectating). They came to see me finish the swim (or tried, they missed me), then spent the day doing their own thing while tracking me online. We had a plan for them to see me mid-way through the run and then be at the finish. They planted near run special needs, so I saw them twice on the run and they were in the finish chute. It's a late evening for young kids, so since they were only out for a couple of hours they had good energy for me after the race (i.e. no meltdowns!). It worked for us!

Gotta say, if it were me, I'd rather have you do the IM while the baby was still in my belly!! Ha!

Life has a way of working itself out one way or another. Just keep an open mind and take what comes your way! Very exciting!!

Anyone with knowledge of the course think 80mm wheels are too deep given the 3,000 feet of climbing each loop?  I train on 40mm wheels and my wife talked about getting me some 808s for Christmas.

Second, I have a 52/38T, 12-25T cassette now.  Is a 12-27T the best choice for CDA?

I rode it this year on a front 808 + rear disc, and I'll be using that setup again.  The climbs are relatively short, steep sections.  A majority of the course is flat.  Wind can pick up at times but it wasn't enough to bother me.

It's good insurance if you haven't ridden the course before.  It gives you 21-24-27 on your last three gears instead of 21-23-25.  All the other gears remain the same.

How's everybody's training looking over the holidays?

I ran a marathon a couple of weeks ago.  Goal was to go sub 4hr, and I finished in 3:53...13 minute PR.
Got a 50k trail run on new years eve...goal is to just finish.

Ran with a IMCDA finisher during the marathon for a couple of miles.  He had three suggestions:
1) Wear neoprene cap during swim
2) Wear neoprene booties if legal
3) Spend a little time in hot tub after swim to warm up.

He said he got so cold with just a wetsuit that he was cycling around like a drunk man for the 1st 30 miles of the bike.

Nice job on the PR and doing these off season races!

I use the arm sleeves to stay warm on the bike if it is cold. I noticed some pros wear these even in warmer weather, are they using them to be more aero?

A lot of the pro's at  Kona (including Lieto) were wearing white arm sleeves.  I remember hearing during the live broadcast that these were something like the Craft Compression Arm Cooler which are somehow supposed to enhance evaporation, and possible reflect more sun.

Not the same as the more standard arm warmer sleeves.

The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated so cancel the search party and put away the blood hounds.  If anyone was starting to plan a good old Irish wake for me you can keep those plans rolling, June 27th will work well for me.

My log is accurate, I have not worked out since mid-November.  The kids are healthy and my marriage is strong.  However, mentally I am beat up.  I’m going through a very rough patch with work right now (that I cannot post about).   I’m not worried about getting fired but it’s sucking the fun out of life.  80++ hours per week and I’m not sleeping well.  Something had to give.

Thanks for the concern, I will try to check in more often.  The big push is almost over, I hope to be back at it soon.   But for now (5:00am) I’m at work…

I have DeSoto arm coolers and will vouch for their effectiveness... and I am generally VERY skeptical of the claims of clothing to do the miracles it says it does.  Once you are sweating faster than evaporation (for me anything above 50 degrees, especially if there's any humidity), I honestly think a tee shirt is just as good as technical fabric.

But the arm coolers really did FEEL cool during my trials in training and during IMLP for me.  They come in black and white and I've had people I swear the black ones are just as cool, which means they work via evaporation not so much reflecting heat/light.  But I'd rather play it safe and have white ones.  If it's not humid, and if you dump some water on them at each aid station on the bike, it will definitely keep you cooler.  I do not wear them for the run, though might consider it if I was racing in a particularly hot/sunny but dry race (to keep the sun off of me and keep me cool).  I do not like messing with sunscreen any more than necessary on race day.
