Hey Kathy,

I used to be stationed at Vandenberg AFB in California, it's right near Solvang. You'll have some nice riding out there. Wine country as well. Maybe you can put some in your water bottlesWink

I got outside for a ride yesterday.  This am raining and did a Cycle Center erg video ride instead.

We are definitely turning the corner in CT though.  Still not great but you can ride outside now.  Sandy and wet in spots so have to ride conservative but still nice to get out.  A couple of more weeks and we should be good (well at least for weekend rides, I'll still be suffering intervals in the early morning inside during the week).

I need some advice on how to best incorporate some races into my training plan. I'm doing the Gale Bernhardt 26 week IM plan.

I'm a fairly experience triathlete, been in the sport since the mid 90's, and I've done several half IM's, my best was a 5:50 in 2009. Lake Placid is my first full ironman.

Unlike Don Fink's Be Iron Fit, my plan doesn't include any racing. I'd like to do a half and an olympic distance prior to Lake Placid. I'd like to do this so I can check out my race day gear, and get a warm fuzzy for doing some longer swims and bikes.

I was thinking I could do Mooseman on June 5th, this is seven weeks prior to Lake Placid, and an olympic distance race about two to three weeks prior to IM.

I'd really appreciate some feedback from some of the iron vets in this group.

BTW, anyone in our group older than 52? Just want to see if I'm the old fart in the crew!

thanks,

Ralph

I know atleast a dozen triathletes who do half Ironman's the end of May or first week in June in prep for LP!

I would be hesitant to do an Oly 2-3 weeks out of Placid. You have been in the sport much longer than I have (4 years) but I tend to be a bit beat up after an Oly race and will likely start my taper 2-3 weeks out. I don't want to be beat up starting my taper. Just my thoughts.

In '09 my coach wanted me to do an Oly 3 weeks out from IM Canada. I did a big week of 28 hours of training, little rest week then the Oly, couple easier days then trained until 10 days out when I tapered. It worked well for me, but I had a coach watching my training, fatigue level and all that. We didn't decide on the Oly until about month before the race.

I'm not gifted athlete or recover quickly as I'm older but it worked for me the year I did it.

I know someone mentioned earlier that they thought they were probably going to change back to the original bike course but does anyone know for sure? Looking at the official Ironman Lake Placid webpage, which has now been updated for the 2011 race, it still shows the bike course the way it was in 2010.

2,903 participants are registered as of 2/28/2011 according to the website roster. I hope I can find a chair in transition.

Started my training program today.  First up a swim, got the pool and it was closed as someone crapped their pants while swimming.  What a way to start   138 days and counting!

Wow, almost 3,000 people.  Race morning, everyone should stand around the banks of the lake, and on a 1-2-3 count, do a simultaneous cannonball into the Lake and all the water will splash out.  Then we can just jog two 1.2 mile laps and not worry about all the contact while swimming.  Simple

More people=more drafting=faster swim time for me

I sent my bike to CA yesterday for Solvang Tri camp after swapping out rear derailuer to a XT MTB with Apex 11-32 cassette to help not spike my power up hills...can't wait..if I do longest ride each day I could do 423 miles but guessing I won't given I've been sick.

One day is 'The Fig' a 9.3 mile TT/ride with average grade of 9% should be an interesting

20 weeks out...spring is almost here...can't wait for outdoor training.

I've reset my IMLP goals...get to starting line...have fun...if I can run train, I'll be a bit more optimistic. Right now my focus will be improving my cycling.

Less than 20 weeks of training to go! This is about the time when my clients start to freak out. I enjoy watching this thread and look forward to seeing you all in Lake Placid.

Even though I've been planning this for years I had a mild and short lived freak out last night. Now that I've started the actual 20 week IM plan it's more real than ever but I'm focused and determined, with some anticipatory excitement (yeah, that's what it is...)

Let me know if I can help in anyway. I will also have a crew on location during race week if anything should come up.

Curious on everyone's wheel selection for IM-LP.  Specifically, is anyone going to run a disc or an aero cover for the rear?  For those that have done LP before...or those that watched or volunteered before...are there a lot of discs for this race?  Wondering if an aero cover is a smart choice considering the extra weight for the climbs?

I may change up something later (only if I can rent a different set) but as of now I am planning on running a disc/trispoke or front and rear trispoke cause that is all I have.

I'm most likely going to go with FP60's for front and rear. Contemplated the Jet Disc for the rear, but you never know when the winds will want to kick up.

I used a 404/1080 combination in 2010. I would stay away from a disc due to the potential for wind. The 1080 in the rear gave me the aerodynamics I was looking for while the 404 on the front provided stability in the wind and on the descents.
