Expert 663 A little slice of paradise | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread harleyclone - 2011-08-18 4:31 PM I haven't posted on here much, but I am planning on doing the meeting on Friday and would be in for a get together. My daugther has been in the ICU for the last 3 weeks since birth, so my wife and kids will more than likely not be making the trip....so any new faces I can meet along the way will surely help on race day.
I am so sorry to hear about your daughter and will keep your family in my prayers. I will be at the Friday dinner with a big group of my Tri friends. I hope to meet up with everyone too ! Nicole

Swim race was delayed about an hour and a half while the storms blew through. High winds blew the registration tents all over the place and blew the buoys off the course as well. They reset the buoys as best they could, but the big turn buoys were not in the right spots so the swim was a wee bit long... like 2.8 vs. 2.4. Times were slow, the water was choppy. Weather cleared up nicely, but due to the delay, we didn't get onto our bikes and onto the bike course until almost 1 pm. And we rode until about 7:30 pm. It started raining toward the end and my pal and I just gave up. It'd been a long day. We got 92 out of 112 miles in and that seemed like more than enough. Rode the stick out, did 2 loops of the course and bailed. |

Member 51 Cincinnati, OH | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Whizzzzz - 2011-08-21 5:01 PM Yeah, that late swim start played games with my schedule, too. I got on the bike about 12:10pm, and rode the whole course. Due to the fact that I was stopping every hour or so to refill water bottles, I barely made it back to Madison before dark. It did turn out to be a great day weather-wise, though. Thee was a pretty good storm brewing south of Verona near the end, but it produced a great double rainbow. Anyone else see this? What a great bike course - challenging, but completely awesome. Hope everyone had a great weekend of training. We're getting close!! Oh, by the way, I did a short run after the bike course yesterday, and headed south toward the Alliant Energy center. When I got to the parking lot, I really debated running through it to find the infamous IM truck in the picture. But it was dark and the lot was definitely closed, and I figured security was somewhere around there as well. But I really considered it, though! GRB1 - 2011-08-21 12:10 PM 21 Days! It takes awhile, and there are STILL persons walking in just when the cannon goes off. Yep, first come and try to grab a spot in the open water and tread around for awhile (you'll have a wetsuit on so it shouldn't be a problem). My best advice - STAY RELAXED and swim YOUR race, and you'll be fine! Good luck! |

Veteran 361 Colorful Colorado | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Be sure to head to the water early. It takes a LONG time to get everyone into the water. Last year I got stuck in the crowd and got to the start line about 10 seconds before the gun. I'll be heading down much earlier this year. |

GF swam a 1:04 on Sat at MOWS. Hah. Yes, prepare for a chicking. I swam a 1:14 ( sans wetsuit ) at MOWS. I've gone 1:04 at IMWI for the swim. So a 1:04 on a longer course, with a smaller draft pack, and yeah, she's under an hour on race day. |

I'm a mid pack swimmer, not fast, not slow. thanks todd I am not fast/not slow and did WI last year (in 1:23). 1TT had great advice, my only other suggestion would be as they are singing the national anthem and counting down, try to move your body from vertically treading water to horizontal - spread out your body and claim a few extra inches if you can. Someone may have said that already in this thread. But I remember last year's start getting kicked a lot in the chest, I'm guessing just from thousands of bodies moving from vertical to horizontal at once. Don't misunderstand, you will still get kicked , but getting into "position" earlier might minimize some of it.

Just looking for advice. About half way between the ski jump and the buoy line. Perhaps a little closer to the ski jump than the buoy line. About 1-2 rows back from the front. That avoided most of the mess at the start. Take the first two turn buoys a little wide, and then it was pretty much jump on the feet in front of me and move in to the buoy line on the return half of the first loop. By then it's pretty much sorted out. Unlike LP unfortunately, there's no magic cable under the water, so sighting is a little more necessary at IMWI. ( Though since you swim parallel to shore, I breath to the shore side, and use that as a frame of reference to keep swimming straight. If you can't see the Terrace, you are heading the wrong direction :D ) |
