Quick question, maybe silly since this is my first IM. So whatever you left or add to your special needs bag you get it back right?

At this race you CAN get it back.  But you have to go retrieve the bags and typically they will be in a huge jumbled pile so you'll have to search for it.  And they are only available for a brief time...the morning after the race maybe?  For a few hours?

The typical advice is to not put anything in special needs that you couldn't live without if you can't get it back.

Ditto.  2006 they threw them away and you could not even look for your stuff. 2008 and 2009 I found both bags 2010 could only find one of my 2 special needs bags (dont' rememebr which one) and there was some guy throwing a HUGE fit because he had a spare pair of shoes in one of his bags and could not find them.  Dont be that guy!!

the rule is going up, on your long run, 10% of your last long run (not more) and my experience is that this is a great rule. If you go more than 10% you will get knee issues (for ex. IT-band) and need more time to recover. Better to run more often with not too many miles every time - don't forget your legs still need the milage.

No it is kept in transition so you get them when you or a designated person with card picks up your bike. You will get T1 and T2 bags back.

Thanks for your comments on the special needs bag. Here is another newbie question:

I am following a training plan from Matt Fitzgerald, that was published about a year ago on Triathlete magazine. http://triathlete-europe.competitor.com/2011/02/03/super-simple-20-week-ironman-training-plan/

The longest ride on the plan is 100 miles which looks ok since is very close to the 112, BUT the longest run is only 18 miles about 3 weeks before race day..

Does 18 miles sound like normal/common for a full Ironman to you

I wil appreciate any comments on this

Thanks

Last year I did B2B full and my longest run was 18 miles. I did it twice, two months apart. It's not a problem at all.

Longest bike was 99.4 miles, too.

I still beat my estimated time by an hour.

Just looking at my logs, seems my longest runs last year were both 15 miles.

I am doing three 20 mile runs and 3 100 mile bikes.  It might be too much but helps boost my confidence.

Did my 18 mile run yesterday and it went very badly. Sure hope that race day is much beter. Every 2 miles or so was in the porta john or behind a tree. Ive had GI issues alot before but never that bad. Good thing is that it didnt stop me and was able to push through. Sucks that it took me so dang long to run it though. We never stopped the clock because you dont get to for the race. 6 hour bike tomorrow.

Much debate on this topic even between coaches.

Most coaches I trust believe max out long runs at 2.5 hours. The recovery cost is to great when running longer. Distance you run in training is only small part of how your IM run goes.

Pacing, nutrition on race day is key to having a good run.

Frequency on running some believe is key.

In my IMs..

First I did runs up to 4 hours long and 21 miles I think, but didn't pace well so walked last 20 miles. But mostly the long runs got me really tired.

Second I did quite a few runs in the 2:45-3:15 time frame, ran more often in training. In race I had some major issues on the bike and threw up for few hours so was quite dehydrated and low on calories. Running in training was solid....run fastest miles were last 3...ended up with 7' difference between first and second half.

Third, I had injury, was undertrained and longest run was 2 hours. Yet I was able to execute my run/walk plan whole run....not fast but given my training pleased I didn't get to that place gave up and just walked.

#172!!!!!!  Surprising how low my number is...its' certainly not because of my speed

I've done 3 16 mile runs and planning on an 18 miler this Saturday if the IT band cooperates.  I've done 1 100 miler and 1 hilly 95 miler and have 3 more planned.

It seems like just yesterday I was registering for this thing and it was a distant goal.  Never thought a whole year of 5 a.m. wake-ups would go so fast.

Good luck in the home stretch everyone.  Stay healthy, focused and positive!

Numbers this year start with women from pros youngest to oldest, male pros youngest to oldest, PC athletes, then they start with AGers women 18 A-Z, women 19 A-Z, ect to oldest women, then men youngest to oldest.

I'm 606 and oldest women I found has 706 which means I'm one of the oldest 100 women doing FL...somehow that seems kind of cool.

It is cool!

And you pointed out something that makes this race unique...a MUCH MUCH smaller number of women!  This race is a sausage fest!

Worked for me...I got to watch a bunch of HAWT dudes pass me on the bike.
