My goal starting the year was to complete a Oly in June and lose weight. I have been fairly consistent in my training with the exception of some travel days related to my work. I have been holding a steady 1000 calorie deficit Since January 1st. I have lost a total of 17 lbs so far. I have not been this small since I was in the Marines about 16 years ago. I think I will actually fit back in my uniform in about 5 more lbs. Darin--BIG Congratulations for really adopting the healthy lifestyle! I think it is terrific. You are obviously very motivated to succeed. One question, are you telling us you dropped 17lbs in a month? I'm no weight loss expert, but that seems like an awful lot in four weeks. Are you being mindful of nutrition when you create that daily deficit? X2 on the big congrats and X2 on Suzy's concerns. Actually, if you do the math, assuming you started on Jan 1 to loose those 17 pounds, you have maintained a 1600 calorie per day difference and that is a lot. I know my HR Monitor figures more calories burned than the BT figures, so maybe I am a little more deficit than I am seeing. I am going to start pulling back and try to ease in to 175 for a final weight for a while. I don't want to keep dropping right past it and I don't want to over indulge either. I tend to be extreme one way or the other, moderation is my weakness. I have been sure to eat plenty of fruits and vitamins, just very low fat |

Elite 3072 san francisco | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed jfought - 2013-02-06 3:48 AM Who's lacing up the shoes with elastic (or standard) laces and getting ready to race this weekend? What's your goal? What's the plan? What is one of your strengths and one of your weaknesses? What are you doing to build on that strength and address that weakness? No racing for me, but I have a 1:20 run on Sunday and will be using non elastic laces. I switched my shoes recently and decided to forgo the orthotics that I have worn for years. Also, I was too lazy to put the Yankx on them and now that they are so comfortable, I am a little gun shy of doing anything to the laces. I like the elastic laces for quicker transitions and for not having to tie laces that keep coming undone, but for some reason, this new pair of Kinvara 3 has not had that issue like my past pairs that would always come undone. Not so fun at mile 22 of a marathon!!!! Strength used to be consistency. Lately, not so consistent. I think my strength is the ability to stay positive when things start going south. Usually, things turn around if we just think about what's at the root and try to adjust. Broken spokes, stomach cramps, etc.... Weakness is definitely my swimming. So hard to go do the thing that eludes me...What to do to address that is to force myself to go to the pool, start by doing the drills that I know will help, and stop making excuses for not going! Aiyah, easier said than done.
Good luck racing fools! |

Has anyone used Carbon Pro. What I am liking is that you mix it with other fluids rather than its own mix like Infinite and Perpetumn from Hammer. Interested if you have thoughts about this product.THX Do you mean Carbo Pro? I used it for the IM marathon twice. I mixed it with H20 and carried it in my Fuel Belt. I liked it because it has a low osmolality which made it very easy to digest. I also liked that it was virtually flavorless. When you are at the marathon stage of an IM, you can get pretty sick of sweet things. By the last 10K even this wouldn't go down and I would switch to H20. I did stop using it in favor of a custom Infinit blend for both the bike and run last year. What I realized is that the sole source of sugar, malodextrin was causing me some post effort GI issues which made recovery fueling difficult. Since I elminated the vast majority of malo from my sports drink I feel better post. Since I had such a tough race in '12, I can't say whether the switch was a good one or not. I can tell you that I was super sick of the Infinit at the start of the marathon, but gutted it down. If my new PowerBar gel blasts work in the March marathon, pretty sure that will be my choice for IM '13. My one caution to you is to watch how much you put in a single solution. As the density increases you have much greater likelihood of GI distress on the run.
Yes I meant Carbo Pro. Thank you for your insight this is helpful. I am going to try a few different types of nutrition including perpetum from Hammer Nutrition (probably the solids first) and also try Carbo Pro. Hopefully it comes in single serving sizes so I can try it out without buying a whole bunch. Again thanks. |

It's one of the best "cocktails." Try mixing Carbo Pro with a Nuun. It's an awesome combination. |

I'm wondering what half a Nuun would taste like in a glass of vodka with ice??? Maybe I'll throw some Nuun in my purse for my school's auction next month and try it out, ha!!! |

Veteran 256 | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Hi all, Sorry I've been absent lately, but I have been lurking. So much to say from posts from, like 8 pages ago, that I'll pass on them for now. Y'all wouldn't know who or what I was responding to! Got out there early this morning and had one of those "tougher-than-it-should-have-been" runs. I'm not running nearly the mileage I have been (or should be). But trying to get out there 3 to 4 times a week - more for maintenance than any sort of training right now. The lack of miles showed itself today I think. Had no energy so just tried to run EZ and get the miles in. Mission accomplished.
That Avg HR is higher than I would like (or expect) for those paces. When I was in shape - and 10 pounds lighter - I ran Marathons in the 140's, so a bit too high for an EZ run. But it is what it is! One of those days. We all have them sometimes. Off to Gainesville this weekend to see DS and his GF. They're getting married in 5 weeks so everyone is super excited - especially DW! The bridal shower is tomorrow and DW is going - hesitantly. It's a Lingerie shower. How does a future MIL react during one of those? DS and I are playing golf while they go to the shower. Don't get to golf with him often enough. Bill |

Veteran 287 Tucson | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Hi, all. Just getting nervous about my lousy 1 mile run this morning. I posted earlier that I saw a PT on Tuesday about my knee. She said it's IT band syndrome even though the pain is under the knee to the outside rather than on the side. Been stretching like a mad woman since Tuesday. I think this may be the missing piece to my puzzle. I really lack flexibility. My right side is bad. Used to be so bad that I had a limp people would comment on. I can just imagine the horrbile things this does to my run gait. Well, I think I may finally be on the right track after 4 friggin years! Don't really think those $350 orthotics are going to help my flexibility issues! Ok, back to happy thoughts. lol |

Veteran 287 Tucson | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed So I ran my little 1 mile run this morning. Started with about 20 minutes of a brisk walk. It went ok but my gut says that I should not be running yet. I have pain under my knee cap on the lateral side. PT thought I may have some meniscus pain there but she really thought it was more likely to be IT band pain. In my research at home I see that the IT band inserts right where I have pain but I just don't know. Anyone here have this kind of pain with IT band? I will try a short bike ride tomorrow. If that goes well I will stick with that and swimming for another week.
On a more positive note, I swam almost 8000 yards this week! I am getting faster which is always nice. Don't think I will ever be blazing fast in the water but that is ok. Probably won't ever be blazing fast on the bike or run either.
Good luck to anyone who is racing this weekend! |

Good luck to anyone who is racing this weekend! Hmm, typically you would find pain at the insertion point which is here: Your under the knee cap description makes me nervous. I'm not PT or doctor, but if you are running on it and it hurts, I would stop. Occasionally you will have an injury where the pain subsides as you warm up. I usually feel it's ok to run on it then so long as when you finish it doesn't hurt ALOT afterwards. If it hurts tomorrow, I agree you should hold off running. Personally when I am coming off of an issue, I am never running a solid mile. Instead it would be something like: 5' walk/2' run/3' walk/2' run and repeat until you've gone 10' of running. Doesn't sound like much, but your body is telling you that something isn't right. you're smart to listen to it. |
