Expert 1157 Tremonton, Utah | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED No official 'Race Report' today for me... but after a long battle with motivation/fatigue and just plain tired this morning, I got my tail to the club and did the "Going Nowhere Fast Brettathlon". Called going nowhere fast because the bike took place on a spin trainer, the run on a dreadmill, and then 500 yards in the pool. I wasn't pushing for any record times, but really wanted to see how I'm doing overall. Getting close, but not quite ready for a 'real' race yet, but it's not far away. If I can have another few weeks of good solid training, I'll be able to do a race and be at least respectable. Congrats to all who completed an "official" race today and tomorrow! And BIG KUDO's to Enders_Shadow for hitting the "REGISTER" button for a HIM. You Go Girl!

She has swum the 500 in just over 8' at meets in the past. There was a 10 yo boy from another club who swam 29s for the 50 free and 31s for 50 fly. Those are national levels times.Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! Fred, those are long distances for young kids. When I was 7 on swim team, our races were only 25 meters. Impressive! Have fun everyone! Those are insane times! Oh my goodness, not in my wildest dreams can I swim that fast!! x2 There was a 16yo boy who turned up to the tri club swim session last night who can swim 100m in 60sec. That made my jaw drop. It's amazing what a difference it makes starting to swim properly as a child! |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED Fred D - 2013-02-24 8:33 AM Yeah, kids and swimming.... We were at the pool officiating for 7 hrs yesterday. There were often 10+ heats for every event my daughter was in. She is fast (1:24 for 100 free), but she is nowhere near FOP as there are girls her age swimming under 1:10 for that distance. Part of it is the height issue, that Megan is not had her growth spurt yet and some girls are a lot taller, but it is also commitment as well. Swimming in the USA is a big time sport for girls with a vast number of clubs that are HIGHLY competitive. Most of us triathletes would be amazed at what sort of volume these kids put in. I am very proud of my daughters, but the 10yo really seems to enjoy it more and was very nicely shaking the hands of the girls in the lanes next to her after every event. i.e.; she is enjoying the competition aspect as well. Back to more swimming today.... Love seeing good sportsmanship instilled early. Poor losers just make all sports look bad. |

Member 108 | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED Good morning everyone, I just wanted to share a bit on my first tri race. It was such a blast and I felt a little sad when it was over =). Race on the Base was actually a group of events including a 5K and 10K in addition to the junior and reverse triathlons. There were over 4,000 participants with 1,011 just for the triathlons. My kid's junior tri started at 715 so we got there by 530am. This is a great race for beginners as its held on a military training base where the swim portion is in a pool while the course is very flat. I would say a good portion of the participants were first timers like myself. My wave didn't start til 10am so there was a lot of waiting around for me...ate breakfast around 7, stayed hydrated and had a GU about 15min before race time. It was fun watching the kids do their first triathlon and I believe I now have 2 little training partners in the future =) I watched wave 1 start and it was pretty inspiring to see some of the triathletes already finishing the race in well under an hour. By race time it was bright and sunny and starting to feel warm. I don't really have a 5K race pace as I have mainly done HMs but I did push it a bit yesterday. By then, the winds had picked up a bit so it was nice for the run but we did deal with some mild headwinds during the bike portion. I really pushed it on the bike portion and I was able to sustain a 19/20mph pace which is great for me. I'm a definite BOPper runner but except for a handful of serious looking riders, I felt like a passed everyone else...granted most of them were probably newbies like me =). I truly felt my recent bike base building leading up to my first century 2 weeks ago really got me ready. The swim portion in the pool was just four 50m lengths of the pool. There was some traffic as you had to basically move to the next lane over but the water was refreshing. I've been learning TI swimming for the past few months but just decided to just swim fast as fast I can for the last 100m ( I was hungry) .... so came out of the pool pretty spent saving minimal time, lol. Transitions went very well expect I forgot to take off my sunglasses as I made way to the pool so had to leave them with a volunteer. My lovely wife had a bbq sandwich waiting for me which I pretty much swallowed whole and her and the kids had already retrieved my stuff from the transition area... I just had to get my bike. The whole experience of the race went rather fast as I was a bit sad when it was all over =( Staffing and volunteers were great ! The one bummer is I am still waiting for my official time, actually a number of us are. I couldn't wait around as my wife and kids had already waited 3 hours + for me. Based on my unofficial Garmin times for my run and bike portions, I was at about 1 hour and 10min when I dismounted so I am hoping to my results come back sub 1 hour 20min which I will be thrilled with and right in the middle of my AG. To balance out my fun morning, the rest of the day and night was spent watching 4-8 kids while my wife was out...while we enjoyed pizza and chicken wings but always with a nice bottle of vino =) I felt pretty strong after the race with no cramping issues and aside from a little tenderness on my quads, I feel good today. My next sprint tri is this Saturday which is the Desert tri which will offer my first open water swim. After that, I'll have 11 weeks to prep for my first Oly distance tri. A number of my tri friends have sensed I am getting into the tri lifestyle as they did years back, but it does feel better knowing I now have actually completed a triathlon =) Thanks again everyone for your encouragement and willingness to share your knowledge and experience with me !

And Fred - sounds like you have a real special daughter - way to go raising a nice kid! (I'm having a little ~not nice~ issue with my soccer daughter...she and another girl on her team are having a personality clash and I'm hoping we can get it worked out nicely.) |

Congratulations to our racers. Love the photo! While some of you were slaving away SBR'ing, I was taking on Waimea Canyon. Just like in the Virgin Islands, I stumbled upon three very large wild goats on the trail. They ran before I could get a shot so here's what I have to share. Awesome for someone living in Wisconsin. |

Awesome family fun. Fred, congrats to your daughter, that's a smokin fast time! My girls have 'splash day', which is the official opening day for spring swim team this Saturday (they swim on a spring/summer only team) and are both looking forward to doing it again this year. Last year was their first and went well. Time to crush some PR's this year. My official weekly weigh in this morning was 199.5! I made my Feb goal. Assuming I can keep it there for a few more days, anyway... That combined with a good feeling and pain free 50 minute treadmill run (well, run/walk) last night has me feeling pretty good today. Heading to the pool after drop off today, and will run later. |
