Expert 4926 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN RE: TT discussion, here's what I posted over there... Ive been a member here since 2007, and actively posting since about the beginning of 2010. EVERYTHING I learned about how to accomplish my first triathlon was from TT and the Gear Questions sections. My local Maryland forum was pretty active back then, too, and we actually had some meet-ups around here. I joined a mentor group in 2011 and I've been part of at least one ever since. As BT membership peaked through about 2014, I was everywhere posting, sharing/teaching, and learning - TT, Gear Questions, The Peloton (that was a great sub-forum), the Challenges, and even the injury area (no surprise there, huh??). You would get dozens of well-respected, knowledgeable responses to pretty much anything you asked, and sometimes some feathers got ruffled if people didn't hear what they wanted to hear. That friction contributed to the banning of some key posters here (Bryan D, Fred Doucette are two that immediately come to mind), and BT went downhill from there. Maybe the redesign contributed, too, though to be honest while I found the new design less friendly, I wasn't overly upset about it and just got used to it. Now I still hang out in TT and post some responses now and then, my Maryland forum has had any action in probably four years, I hang out with two mentor groups (BDAS, and the Manatees occasionally). The rest of the forums are pretty much worthless to me anymore. I tend to pose more personal questions to the mentor groups where I have people I "trust" (well, at least as much as you can trust someone that you've never met in person LOL ), though there are certain people that still answer questions in TT (Ben, Jason, Marc, Arend, among others come to mind...) that have specific expertise that I want input from. I post it there because I think others could benefit as well. TT isn't what it used to be, but hell nothing is. It is what it is, which is still a good thing in my opinion. |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Up early for a "Quality Wednesday" swim workout with Masters. Mostly, quality Wednesday just means a bunch of fast sets on short rest, with more rest between the sets. I have a love/hate relationship with Quality Wednesday. By the end, it is mostly hate. Yesterday afternoon's run was good. It is beautiful out here, so I'm trying to absorb as much of the sun as I can before the spring rains set in. Hoping to get home in time to do my scheduled afternoon ride outside! I took a step to address my lackluster run performance on anything other than flat/slightly downhill courses by running the "hilly" part of our neighborhood. From my house, once you reach the main road (0.25mi ish) you can go left, which will take you on a mostly flat run with one monster hill. Or, you can go right, which takes you on a run with a series of small to moderate hills over the whole route. I nearly always go left. I hate running up hills. My HIM this summer has a hilly run course, full of slight inclines over long distances. I'm not there yet, but I figure this step is at least in the right direction. |

This race, along with the rest of the spring classics, is like Spring Training baseball for me - a warm reminder that spring is coming. Makes me happy! I record them all and watch them throughout the year while I"m on the trainer - so I get Paris - Nice, Giro d'Italia, Tour de California, Tour de France, and Vuelta a Espana, plus I also record the UCI World Championships That's a couple hundred hours of cycling viewing while slogging on the trainer. That's A LOT of bike racing to watch! I tried to watch the TdF last year, but it was boring. So, so boring. I'd be afraid to watch it on the trainer for fear of falling asleep and falling off my bike. That might hurt my bike. Part of my issue is that the commentators don't really explain anything to you about strategy or technique, or anything really. They assume you already know that stuff, which is a pretty obnoxious way to comment on a sport. Not very welcoming to newbies (which has been my general experience with the cycling only community here, so it isn't surprising to me). |

Gretchen - Congrats on finishing Quality Wednesday. I so wish I could find a masters group around here to swim with. I find that I don't push myself as hard as I can if there is no one in the pool to challenge me (my pool has a total of three lanes and I can count the times on one hand when all three lanes have been filled by two people). Good luck with your HIM training. The best way to train for a hilly course is to train on those bleeping hills. So you might want to have a hill workout every week or so in order to train your mind and body for your race. And just for the record - I hate hill too but I've learned to love what they can do for my body and outlook. Keep up the great work! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN SOrry about my absence over the past week. I've injured my right Hammy and have been nursing it - which means fewer workouts and posts. It's my hope to get back on the horse today with a run/ride and I'm hoping my body cooperates. 40 days from today I'll be running the Boston Marathon. SO keep your fingers crossed. Thanks! |

Veteran 1677 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN I raced a 40k TT last weekend and finally got the race report written up: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=546294&posts=1#M5215432 TL;DR version: Best power I've ridden at this distance, but slowest time ever (eight u-turns on course, rough roads, and rear brake rubbing just a little bit)....unfortunately was late to my race start time and was penalized by not being allowed to start on the ramp and also given a two minute time penalty. Fastest in my category, second female overall, so fairly happy with it, though know there's room for improvement!

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN 40 days 'til Boston. Todays workout was 70 minutes on the treadmill (4 miles) and 45 minutes on the bike. This may not sounds like a lot but it was my longest run to date (or second longest) and I really pushed the pace at the end. I don't want complain but it's a major pain in the butt (literally and figuratively) to come off the couch and jump right into an 8 week long marathon training program especially when you weigh over 260 pounds to start. But the tough work and the big challenge will make it all the sweeter when I finish. I've got PT tomorrow and to be honest - I need to get back into the grove of doing my exercises each day. The threat of losing to a Ravens fan of all people really motivated me in February. Nicole - wanna do a March challenge? Onward! |

I got a little choked up reading about your run. It brought back all the feels from my HIM last summer. I remember doing the mental math to see if I was going to finish before the cut off. |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN 60' bike on tap for later this afternoon. Hoping to do it outside, as it is looking like a beautiful day. Yesterday afternoon I managed a 40' ride/15'run brick outside. Temp wise it was wonderful. I forgot to think about the wind though, and that was terrible. It was my first ride outside since September though. I have a long way to go to get back to where I was before. Ugh--I should have ridden more this winter!! |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Nicole and Andrew, great race reports! Nicole, that stinks that you got to the start late, but awesome that if you had gotten there on time you definitely would've come in first. And now you know to get your race wheel on earlier. Learning opportunities! Andrew, I teared up reading some of yours. How amazing that you were able to do that! Congrats on being an Ironman. You clearly earned it! |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN This has been a good week of training. I was totally dead Monday after my swim meet the day before. I was going to go to swim practice but decided to take the night off instead. Tuesday I did the HIIT cycling class at my gym, Wednesday was boot camp and this morning was body pump. Gonna go on a run this afternoon after work, too. It's in the 60s here, so should be gorgeous. This weekend is supposed to be quite cold again Not sure what I'm going to do tomorrow. Maybe yoga? My body is so tight. I need to foam roll after my run today too. |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Masters swim this morning--2100m mostly in sets of 200s. I was hard, but I got some technique advice from our octogenarian that helped speed me up some. Of late, I've been extremely frustrated by a lack of progress. This has given me some new hope. Run on tap this afternoon, which will be done outside. Snow forecasted for tomorrow (note, it was 74F here yesterday). |

I'll catch up with you all over the next day or 2. but in the mean time I've finished this: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... Congrats! I noticed in your race report a comment about Wanaka. Have you raced Challenge Wanaka in the past? It's one I'm sorta tossing around....not overly seriously, but kinda. Sounds like it's supposed to be a beautiful race, but it looks like it could be quite lonely, given the results I peeked at....not a huge number of participants.
Random question for everyone else -- how come no one responds to the RR itself (i.e. people respond in the mentor group, but not on the RR thread)? One of the cool things about RR's is that they're easy to find in the future....and sifting through years old mentor groups to see what people had to say about your race is not. I don't know if anyone else goes back and reads through old race reports, but I do so I don't make the same mistakes, and sometimes to remind myself that I'm capable of more than I thought....and as an added bonus, it's kinda cool to see what others said. Just a question |

Good question. Last year I there was at least one BDAS'er (Mike) who would comment on my race reports directly. It's a nice bit of direct feedback. For me, replying in the BDAS thread is a way to continue the BDAS conversation however in the future I'll try to add responses to the RR as well. Another good weather weekend coming up for me. Saturday morning the trail running group is planning on a trail that should be in decent condition. Sunday I should be out paddling with the open water swimming group. |
