Ours were cute little furry jerks again last night, but they're still cute enough to keep.  FYI, kittehs are NOT very aero when they get tossed off the bed.

Today's job-saga update is that I just got a call from the recruiter who said that the head honco partner guy liked me and now they want me to interview with the 2 associates I'd be working with.  Interviews galore!  Hopefully these will be the last two and then there will be good news

Wow, that is quite the interview process they have!!  At least it looks like there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  Good luck!!

Have you considered little aero kitteh helmets??

So exciting!!  No word on working for the current firm, I assume?

As for the kittehs, aero helmets might keep them from getting kitteh head injuries or needing red solo cups to prevent wound licking.  Those poor abused little kittehs, but such photo ops!!  Plus if they got helmets, they might be so PO'd that they'd leave you alone so mission accomplished?

Just got word on the current firm that the first OK has come through for me to work remotely, but now it has to go to the board of directors - which will be a LOT tougher to get approved.  We'll see what happens!

I don't know that the aero helmets would help... it was more about the splaying limbs not being very streamlined.  Any ideas to help with that aspect of the aero-kitteh??

Grasp with one hand (non dominant) under the chest, from behind the front legs.  Dominant hand under the abdomen either just in front of the back legs, or better still, between the back legs.  This should preferably be done with the cat at your side, near your hip (seated up in bed).  It is more of a push than a toss or throwing motion.  Push both arms, from beside your body, forward.  Voila.  Aero kitty off the bed.  I get great distance, especially with the 18 pounder, after he has woken me up with a french kiss inside my ear at 3am.

Wow, so many possibilities!!

Hm.  Splaying limbs.  If you can hold front legs with one hand and rear legs with the other and throw from the rear hand like you're shooting a basketball, you should be able to get some good distance before the limbs start flailing.  Trying to do that when groggy and still aiming away from furniture and walls might be a challenge, but I'm sure you're up for it.

Kate - this is really cool!  I had no idea that you could train lizards, but what a great way to help keep the stress levels down for them.  I also don't know that I ever would have thought of turtles as chubby before now!

They seem like a helpful and friendly bunch, but I like to be prepared going in to things. Speaking of being prepared....I have my first swim lesson tonight. I am a weak swimmer and have no idea how to do a crawl. I found the coach through this forum (woo hoo!) but I have no idea how to determine if she is "good" or what have you. Any tips or suggestions?

She is "good" if you are learning, making progress, and enjoy your personal interactions with her.  If she's making you feel dumb, you can find others that are nicer (not that she will).  I worked with a local tri coach on swimming technique for a bit.  That was profitable.  Give it time, you'll enjoy it!  Let us know how it goes!

I'd say she's good if you are learning and making progress whether or not you personally hate her guts and the very sight of her (but I'm sick and can go a long way on hatred, just sayin' )

If the coach is on this forum, one of the actual coaches FOR BT, or was recommended by someone on BT, chances are good she's at least competent.

I can tell you that I have improved muchly since working with my training partner, who is a personal trainer.  I tell him on a regular basis that I hate him.  Just sayin'.

Wait... we have the same training partner???

Heh.  Maybe they were separated at birth?

Very cool!

Kate, that is fantastic!  I love how passionate you are and how much you put into your work.  I really appreciate the fact that it is becoming more and more important to zoos, aquariums and research facilities to ensure that the lives of the critters are as enriched and stress free as possible!  If we must have domain over them, we should make darn sure that their lives are as good as we can make them

That seems very complicated, especially if done while sleepy.   I suggest a skin suit for the kittehs.

Well, you have to practice when awake.  But it doesn't take long to get good.  I was motivated--I hate being woken up.  I gets cranky.

I recently had a coach that I lost faith in, and ended our coaching relationship.  I had not been enjoying the relationship for a while.  It was affecting the progress.  In that way, I say it matters.  If the coach doesn't take you seriously, it's hard to take them seriously.

I did enjoy my time.  I'll get back out with them again sometime.  I was just happy to have kept up with the A group.

Another point I noticed (haven't read the articles yet) is the dress standard.  Here I am in my Peral Izumi solid colored jersey, and everyone else is in some type of custom jersey.  I didn't let it scare me away (because I know I can ride with them), but it could easily create an 'us and them' with new riders.

It was just interesting to experience cycling culture.  Which is is different from triathlon culture, which is different than running, which is different than swimming.... I'm glad to be a part of all FOUR groups.

How is it different?

I think there are subtleties in each sport that influence the cultures in slightly different ways.  Runners don't shave their legs.  Cyclists value group activities more than triathletes.  Swimmers don't have gear, but have teams and meets. These different things, among others, affect mindsets in slightly different ways, imo.

The dog stayed away b/c he knows cats are crazy to begin with and when you add one in a shark suit riding a vacuum that is super crazy and time for all good dogs to stay away!

My road bike got fixed. And then I rode it today. At 530 am. In residential/trail areas.
AND I didn't fall off. And I only encountered one car who turned before he got to me. So that is progress, albeit slow.
I spent much of last night watching videos on how and when to shift gears but I can't quite get it.
Is there a trick?

I know that the right side puts more resistance on the chain and the left side puts less resistance on the chain. And I know that more resistance makes me feel like I have more control (which I like. I like control). Is there a way to move the front one up and the back one down?

Also does anyone have thoughts on a bike rack for a little tiny hatchback? Right now my car can only hold myself, and one passenger. My bike is passenger 3, 4 and 5. My dad thinks that they dent the bumper (not cool) .

Maybe I should just get a pickup truck...

Welcome Debbie! Very Cute pup. I just joined myself and this group has been wonderful!

When we had the Focus hatchback, we bought the 3-bike version of this (ummm...we haven't used it yet because we have a trucks , but they have good reviews):

YAY!! Sounds like you had a good ride and you even got up EARLY to do it!  Residential/trail areas are great places to start; they're fairly safe, usually pretty, and a wonderful place to learn to enjoy riding.  It's kind of like learning to ski - you go on the green runs first and build your way up.  Slow progress is still progress. Way to go!

Good job getting out there this morning!  I rode my mountain bike with just cages for several months before getting my road bike/clips because I was so nervous about shifting and falling over.

The "trick" for me was to ride around the neighborhood (minimal cars) and shift up and down on big/small rings to get a feel for which hand does what. The feel and sound and time it takes to move between gears is just something that will take T.I.T.S  to get used to. I wanted to see what was going on, so (before we had a bike trainer) I had my husband hold up the back of my bike and "pedal" while I used the shifters and watched the chain move.

OHMUHGARSH - I love all the pics of the furrkids everyone has!

That seems very complicated, especially if done while sleepy.   I suggest a skin suit for the kittehs.

Not quite the same, but the skin suit reference reminded me of this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLt5rBfNucc

That is TFF.  I can't believe the cat doesn't even shrink away from hitting the walls.  Aaaaaand, the dog doesn't come in until the vacuum stops!

The dog stayed away b/c he knows cats are crazy to begin with and when you add one in a shark suit riding a vacuum that is super crazy and time for all good dogs to stay away!

The dog gets in on the fun too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Of2HU3LGdbo

Great races everyone!

Kate I saw that article on FB very impressive

For bike racks do you have a trailer hitch? I've got a rack on my wrangler that doesn't touch the vehicle at all. As for denting bumpers etc. most don't and most road bikes are quite light, if you loaded up three beach cruisers it might happen.

Sorry I've been incommunicado, was visiting DW's family in OH and for whatever reason it's a cell phone death trap. Had a mostly good weekend except no one is helping take care of Grand-ma's house. DW owns it, long story, and we have a lot of work to get it up to where it should be. I'll be going back when I can get away and putting my boot up some lazy kids' azz. Still me off, researching private tow laws in OH and a few other things. Also got to spend 6 hours in beautiful Chicago - Midway Airport on my way home ...

But got a ride in today, I needed it to say the least and back to work Friday. I enjoyed the ride 95 degree temps and all. Hopefully one of the guys I worked with in bike patrol gets his bike back soon and we can start riding together until we are in a state to be seen by other cyclists haha, he was hit by a vehicle a year ago and insurance is finally paying out.

Got to start dinner for DW, have a great day yall!

(In case you haven't checked out the glossary, T.I.T.S. = Time In The Saddle, i.e., time riding your bike.  You don't need certain anatomy to get used to changing gears. )

Emily, I have been mulling this around in my head for a bit, so I googled and found that my Canadian geography is useless. I also found a listing on bike clubs in Ontario. You may find it beneficial to meet up with one of them on a morning and see what it is all about. Mine does an occasional coached ride, which spends the first 30 minutes or so working on basic skills. It was very beneficial as I was getting back into biking.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
