Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hit a cat on the way home tonight. I feel so bad. I tried to avoid it, but there was only so much I could do. He was in the middle of the highway. I slowed down, and then he ran right in front of me. Sad, sad, sad. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So today I went online to register for this supa sprint tri that I have done for the last couple of years. They do 3 different length races each year. I do the long course event which is fairly short just a 300m swim, 9k bike and 3k run. It is a women's only event and held to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Council and I do it in honor of a friend who passed away last year from secondary breast cancer. Anyway, this year they are doing a triple challenge where you can sign up to do all three events one after the other so this would be the long 300/9/3 followed by the medium 200/6/2 and then the short 100/3/1. I am seriously thinking about doing this and I know that you are all going to say JUST DOOOOOOOOOOO EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTT But my question is this will be a reasonably tough thing for me to complete because of the running and 1 week later I am doing the swim leg of a HIM with some people from work. What do you think, should I shelve the triple challenge until next year or just bite the bullet and do it? There is 5 weeks until the race so I have a little bit of time to decide. (This is also one of the only races here that gives out finishers medals so the thought of the bling is kind of alluring, dumb hey?) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm going to do my ride report from my aborted metric century tonight. It was coooooold. Never got above 52*. Haha, and then later in the day I saw all the photos on twitter from IM Lake Tahoe. Wow, coldness. I've been wanting to visit my brother in Phoenix before he finishes up school there. It has also crossed my mind to combine a trip with a race. I have another friend who's moving down there, and she suggested that we all do a HM together, so it looks like I'll be doing a HM in Phoenix in February! Yay! |

Salty, you must be getting excited for YOUR new job! Great job all you racers, I haven't checked out any RR, but Felicia, that is a pretty cool trophy. Welcome to Kingsley, welcome back Nancy. Jo, glad to hear things are headed in the right direction with your wrist/cast. I think I can be taken off the DL for my foot, but kept on for my shoulder. Grrrrrr! Back to work, sigh! I had a second phone interview last week. They are trying to find a day that everyone is available for an in-person interview. Oh, well this is good news! Fingers crossed and all that jazz ;-) HUGE YAY!!! to this one! Lots of yay! And your patience and forbearance do not go unnoticed. You are an example to us all ... err ... me. |

Guess who's going to be getting their weekends off changed? I will be switching to Sundays/Mondays off from Tuesday/Wednesdays---Only problem? I don't know exactly when this starts (I am betting in November, but who knows?), and of course, it will mean that another coworker will have to switch their days off (cause I have the seniority...)--so I may be starting some "DRAMA". Whatever--I've worked there for nearly 7 years, and only didn't change my weekends due to school. I have earned this. On another note, I took the husband to see World War Z tonight---For those who have seen it--the nifty "treatment" they try? I turned to Clint and said "my friend Yanti could TOTALLY pull this off--she's been sick with really nifty stuff" He agreed. Don't wanna spoil it for everyone who hasn't seen it, but if you ask I'll tell you all here. Now I gotta see it!!! You stick to your guns at work, KatieFrogCat. |

I have been looking at some trainer sessions in a couple of books that I have. A lot of them have single leg drills in them. Are these worth doing or not? Is there a purpose to them? What do the books say about their purpose? I did months of knee rehab with them. Hate them. Don't see why I should pedal with one leg when I have two relatively good ones. But that's just me I believe the purpose is to develop your ability to pull 360* with each leg, rather than just to push, or to push and pull straight up. The idea is to develop an efficiency in your pedaling so that you maximize the power from each stroke. Yes, efficiency has been cited as the rationale, but this logic does not look at things well enough. What I mean is that it does not look at the efficiency of creating that power. In the cycling position, the leg extension is stronger than the contraction for pulling up. And it's not even close. I forget exactly how much, but think that some of the smallest people in here could put out more power in their extension than I can on the pull up (a 180 lb guy whose strength is the bike). Then back to the idea of using the circle, that's not really far off. But you don't use each leg for the entire circle and double it up (since you have 2) to be most efficient. That's a waste due to the variation in creating power at different points of that circle. Instead, since you have two legs concentrate on the most powerful phase of each and then fill in the gap between them. That way you're using the most effective part of your stroke for each leg and get a more consistent output going through the cranks in a more efficient manner. You figure out that gap by riding lots. It comes faster by riding hard and riding hills. Hills slow you down faster which makes the gaps more obvious. Some think to still try and lift the leg in the back to pick up it's own weight, but even that isn't necessary. Top level cyclists will have a negative pedal force in this region, meaning the leg isn't picking itself up. The other one is pushing it. There is no real minimum necessary as the more effective component should be doing as much of the work as you can give it. Having said that, while there isn't really a minimum power to create, it's still beneficial to do just enough make the motion feel circular. So in that, I never have a release point where it feels like I just pushed off a stair step, but rather fade into nothing in the back of the stroke. This helps keep the motion flowing smoothly. I don't think this part of the motion really deserves much concentration. It'll happen over time. Concentrate on the push and everything else tends to work itself out over time. SUPER AWESOME POSSUM LIKE. Couldn't have said it better myself ... and I didn't, so I'm really glad you did! (Wait ... what was your name again? |

The first few times I hit animals, I was a blubbering mess. This time of year, the frogs and toads are crossing the roads in mad numbers at night. The road I drive home on is a rural highway, and I'm probably taking out 20 an evening. It makes me so sad by the time I get home. There's no way to avoid them. Sucks. And now deer season... |
