I HATE OCEAN SWIMS SO MY FIRST CRITERIA WAS A LAKE OR RIVER SWIM. SO THEN DID NOT WANT TO DO LP FOR 1ST IM DUE TO HILLS, SECOND DID NOT WANT LOUISVILLE DUE TO MISERABLE HEAT, DID NOT WANT TO TRAIN DURING THE SUMMER FOR AZ. THIS LED ME TO CDA. THEN I VOLUNTEERED AND LOVED THE AREA AND MY WIFES FAVORITE PLACE ON EARTH IS THE NORTHWEST AREA OF MONTANA. CHOICE WAS EASY FOR ME. |

After IMLP this year, I was not ready the next day to sign up for another one. It took some time to decide if I wanted to do it, and some negotiation with the family to make sure it was a good decision for us as a family. By the time that happened, IMLP (closest to me) was closed, but CdA was still open. My criteria for my ideal IM: - good chance that it won't be blazing hot. - some hills on the bike to help break up drafting (I do not want to be torn between letting a peleton zoom by and cheating). - summer to fall to allow adequate time for outdoor training in DC area. - bonus: easy travel on southwest airlines. |

I've always wanted to do IM CdA. I grew up in Spokane...so this is like my backyard, even though I live in CA now. It's an insanely gorgeous area and my entire family can come watch without having to travel. I'm really, really excited! |

When I got into tris last March, my biggest goal was to do the New York City triathlon, since that's where I grew up and getting up to Olympic distance seemed like such a huge deal at the time. A couple of months later, I started daydreaming about doing Lake Placid one day while running. Two months after that, I said why not make 2011 even bigger and more challenging than it was already going to be based on meeting a huge professional milestone (launching our spacecraft off to Jupiter in early August) and throw in an ironman too. At the time, CDA was still open, I liked what I read about the course, especially the multiple loops through town for my wife and son to watch, and I was on the way. So I'm excited, not as excited as nerdjock, mind you, but somehow managing to slack less on training nonetheless. |

Master 5557 , California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I know I asked about people outside the Pacific Northwest, which is where I am. But I'm bringing friends this time This'll be CdA #2 for me, which I chose the first time around mainly because it's within driving distance. This year I have my brother and three other guys also joining - they're from Oregon, Idaho, Illinois, and Hawaii. We could've settled on another race but the June date works out well for all of us. Also how often do you get a bunch of people you already know to go sign up for an Ironman with you. Pretty awesome. |

Master 1332 Vista, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Why CDA?
Beautiful location. Living in CA, I wanted to stay on the west-ish coast. AZ is too flat and it just didn't hold any allure, plus it's such a late season race. With CDA, I can do CA 70.3 as a good warm-up and train from Jan. on. I was in MT for a couple of years in the 80's going to school and we drove through CDA, thought it would be a good place to vacation with the family after the race...or event (not race) in my case. Pacing is key and nutrition, oh and training, and, and....

Elite 2998 Fishers, Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Hey all! Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! I'm looking forward to the New Year! Had a good time with some family in TN for a White Christmas. Why IMCdA? I've watched the past 2 years, on site, as friends tackled it and it's gorgeous. I figured it'd be a good challenge, and it works well into my schedule in that I get the summer off because of grad school. So, my brother is getting married on 4th of July weekend (yay---after IMCdA) but because of that, the family get together that was going to happen at IMCdA isn't really happening now because it's happening at the wedding. My Mom may come out, and I may have a friend that decides to come out--but I have a house rented in Downtown CdA, less than a mile from finish line. It's this house: http://www.vrbo.com/234966. I am looking for other folks who might be interested in sharing. PM me if you are and we can discuss. |

Veteran 490 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Well, I went with the HED Jet 6 C2 (60mm) for the front and Jet 9 C2 (90mm) for the back for my Christmas present. Cheaper versus ZIPP, lighter than my current OEM wheels, and stronger for use now and then as a training wheel. My 12-27 cassette is on order now. December training logs are final after my swim at lunch today. Swim - 17 hours ~ 42,500 meters Bike - 21 hours ~ 410 miles Run- 19 hours ~ 149 miles On another note, I've been looking at various CdA post race write-ups and race reports to learn/pick-up the little things as I don't have much tri experience. I found this one interesting: http://www.deltatriathlon.com/uploads/IMCDA_2007_Nasrin.pdf Edited by 3Aims 2010-12-31 10:01 AM |

Crappy month. Sick, traveled far, and burned out a bit. Hopefully the trend goes back up in January. I think I am nearly done with the ravages of the bug that got me and got some mental clarity. Need to bring it like the above log ^^^ |

Master 2406 Bellevue, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread ironeric2010 - 2010-12-29 12:34 PM What's the drive time to glacier? I think it's about 5 hours? Had talked about doing that or taking the long haul down to yellowstone. Regarding bike shipment....my thought was to use something like ironmanbikes and ship via fedex. Although perusing the CDA website I noticed a big fat TBD on the "bike shipping options". This is what was offered at IMFL this year and I thought something similar used to be on the CDA website. Yes, the Ironman Bike Store offers full service bike repairs, assembly and disassembly of bikes that are shipped via FedEx, UPS or transported via air carrier. They will be staffed by expert bike technicians and stocked with a variety of merchandise. I shipped my bike to IMLP 2010 and delivered to the bike store. Just as easy as Tri Bike Transport (which I've used 3 times for IMAZ) but that wasn't offered for Seattle-to-Lake Placid. The additional complexity was boxing my bike, but I already own an Ironcase so that was easy enough. It takes me 30 minutes to pack my bike. I expect they will remove the TBD and have a delivery address soon enough. spudone - 2010-12-29 12:34 PM So for those of you not in the Pacific Northwest -- what made you choose IMCdA? Well, I am from the Pacific Northwest but I've never done IMCDA before. I choose IMCDA this year for several reasons. Timing was most important. IM St. George wasn't going to work - I need to be in New York for my daughter's graduation May 18th. IMLP I did last year, although late July is great. I've raced IM Canada twice and (a) didn't want to do that again and (b) it interferes with the first day of school which is Monday after race day. In 2009 we drove all night back to Bellevue so my daughter could be there for her first day of high school. Race an Ironman, shower, grab some food, drive 300 miles overnight - it's just not as much fun as might think. So IMCDA on 6/26 works out well. Expenses will be lower and logistics should be easy, as easy as IMC but the drive is a bit longer. I thought lodging would be easier, but it looks to be just as difficult. We hope to rent a house or condo and make an early summer vacation of it. Without flying, things are oh so much cheaper. I have a number of local tri friends who are racing IMCDA and a number who have raced it before. So knowing lots of people in the race (including some BTers, I hope) will be nice. Want to do a warm-up HIM, but the one right here is town is 6 weeks prior to the race. Is this too close to the 140.6 to allow for proper recovery and finish the program? What about going at 75%? Thanks for any advice. Jim Not sure I have "advice" per se, but some things to consider, Jim. I think it depends on your fitness level whether you can do a HIM 6 weeks out and if you're capable of restraining and only doing 75%. Sometimes it's tough to do that in the heat of a race. Those competitive juices start flowing and holding back just isn't an option in that moment. I know the build and recovery periods in an IM training program are important and if executed properly will take you up to the IM prepared and ready to roll. I guess if your build can coincide with the HIM and you don't peak for that race instead of IMCDA. Just some things to consider. Hope it helps. |

Thanks for any advice. Jim Hi Jim, I'm following the exact same plan, and six weeks out is right in the middle of the 5-6 hour long ride and 2-3 hour long run weekends, which is the peak of the plan. If you think you can recover in a week so you can make the full workouts the following weekend, then you're probably ok to go for it. Since you've already done a half, you should have a good idea how you are going to recover. If you aren't reasonably sure that you can keep it to one lost weekend of long workouts at that point in time, then I wouldn't do it. Since you've already run a half, I wouldn't view it as a necessity. Good luck with your training. |

New user 42 Louisville, KY | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Many thanks for the feedback. After looking a little more closely at the program, and reviewing my post-race issues from Augusta I think I'll be able to do the HIM. Besides some tendonitis in my right foot, I was feeling pretty peppy by Friday following the race. The local race is a hilly bike/run course. I'm sure if the race director could find a lake with some hills he'd be staging the race there. I think I'll be able to hold back as I'm really working on keeping my heart rate in the zone and letting the speed be what it is. First timer at 140.6, and looking for a <14 hour finish as my stretch goal. |

Should you find your plan inadequate you still have 3 weeks of training to straighten things out before the race. |
