JMoney - 2012-02-23 9:25 PM So far following Fink's plan and I haven't missed a day yet and only had to adjust for one workout so I'm feeling really good about that. On the other side I still feel kinda nervous that I'm not training hard enough because I'm feeling too good afterwards. I'm sure it will change soon as things really start to ramp up in week 11. So I just keep going hoping that I'm doing the right intensities.Stay on target.......... Stay on target............

Great job sticking to the plan.

Try picking one workout per week and go a little harder, but not too hard.  I tried this and it only took a tweek to make me feel worn out, you're probably in the right spot and don't need to do anything.  There is plenty of time left and the build starts soon, so you want to feel fresh for that period and don't want to get burned out or peak too early.  Trust the plan.

Gentleman, remember we're in the Base Building Phase.   Also, many of of workouts are in tame conditions - either inside, or outside with cool temps.  Wait until the middle of the Build and the middle of the Peak Periods in May and June when it's hot and humid out.  When your're 4.5 hours into your bike ride, sun beating down on your back, your quads are sore and achey with each pedal turn as you fight a stiff headwind with a full hour still left to ride.  At this time you'll no longer question if you're doing enough.  You'll be plenty sore, sunburnt, and fatigued.  Trust me

The Base Building Phase is supposed to be the easy phase.  If it were hard and brutal over 20 weeks out, you'd never make it to Race Day.

Since this is now my third time training for an Ironman, for the third consecutive season in a row, I've chosen to do some more strength-specific work and intensity over Z2 aerobic volume the last two months; however, starting now I am transitioning back to the Fink Plan and will focus on whatever the plan calls for.

I strongly suspect by as early as mid-March, you gentleman will start to feel more fatigue and soreness.

This short Article: Are you an impatient Triathlete?  Sums it up nicely.

There are two parts to the impatience. The first is a question I get asked a lot this time of year, “Why can’t I do more?” I gently explain that in January and February one cannot and should not train as much as during the summer. Most of the important races are later in the year and it is hard to stay fresh for those races if the training load is too high too early. Winter offers a natural break in the training cycle with unpredictable weather and less daylight. A progression needs to occur so the body adapts, does not break down and absorbs the training load.

SEADOCHA - 2012-02-23 7:57 PM So glad tmrw is a rest day. I need it! How are you guys feeling about your training? Are you feeling better than expected, right on target or a little behind?  I got sick for a few days so I'm a little behind, but very content with some of my numbers and the past 2 weeks of training. We only have a little over 2 weeks for daylight savings time folks!Cool

My impression was that I'm a bit behind where I should be, and checking out a few of the logs from people on this thread confirmed those thoughts. I'm not terribly worried though... yet. My work schedule has been so erractic and I'm hoping that won't be the case going forward, plus as you mentioned, daylight savings is coming!!

I feel the same!!! It feels like it wasn't enough. But the craving translate to a better work out tomorrow and.the next. Do you feel any difference? Week 1-5 my legs were sore and now I didn't even realized I clicked in 11 last week!

It's hard to tell if I feel any difference, I guess I would say I do on the bike since I'm on the trainer 100% of the time now.  I haven't really had any downtime from last season and this season.  Though it wasn't as structured in November and December I still managed to stay consistent with running and swimming.  I look at it the same way as you where I feel good and excited about training the next day.  So day to day I feel good but when i look at July 22nd, I keep asking myself "Is what I'm doing today enough, or am I'm going to be posting in the beginning of July, asking what can I do to make up the time/training"  It's a never ending cycle I guess,  I just keep trusting the plan and take it one day at a time.

I apologies to the Ironman Training Gods for my remarks earlier,  I got your message on the 2 hour 45 min trainer ride this morning.   I'm not sure if I'll be looking forward to more Saturdays on the trainer.  Now I have to start to work on recovering faster so I can continue training.  I'm definitely going to feel this for the rest of the day.

I certainly feel behind the curve on training.  My main challenge is that we haven't even begun to ramp up yet and I'm still struggling with time management.  I have a hard time getting all the prescribed workouts in -- and that is even after I've just set as a given that I'll not swim more than once a week.  It is a mental kick in the shorts each week when I look at the "planned v. actual" chart.  It is what it is. I'm have better fitness now -- in February -- than I've had in about 15 or 20 years

You guys are making me feel better about missing some days this month due to sickness.  I am on virus #2 this month...will be glad when it's over.  Reminding myself that it is early on in the scheme of trainig is helpful.

Otherwise I have been doing great!

Doing Fink's plan and feel pretty good about it so far, mainly because I am WAY ahead of last year when I was training for IM#1 @ CDA.

Im pulling a 13hr work out this week and im happy to report that I dont feel burn out at all!  Swimming at 2500m starting next friday, tolerating the bike trainer ride well and running is a bit of a work cause of frozen snow that makes the side walk very slippery.  All in all, I look forward to my next work out and no "drag myself to do the work out" kind of feeling!  Hope all is doing well!

I had a good weekend of training as well.

Saturday Run 90min w 10 x :30sec strides followed by a 30min trainer ride.

Sunday Ride 2:45 outside with many good hills.  The last 10 miles got "frisky" with the pace, but the legs felt great.  I followed the ride w a short 10min easy run.  I love the new bike!!!

Monday - Rest, Roll (foam roller) and family yoga w the kids!

The swim training needs some attention, so I plan on March being a swim focus month.

Best of luck to you all...

Sounds like you all are doing great! I've had some time management issues myself as I've had a lot of travel this month (fairly unusual).  Hoping life will settle down and I can get back to business.  Keep up the good work, warm weather is on it's way!

Sorry for a brief hijack, but I wanted to follow up on a previous post about LP Housing.  We've had some interest but we still have availability.  There are 2 options, depending on the size of your party.    Both are private suites with bathroom and kitchenette.  You'd also have access to the main house with full kitchen, etc.  Both are a mandatory 5 night rental from 7/19-7/24, although you're welcome to come & go as your schedule allows.

Suite 1) 4 person (max) - $1600 - Queen bed, 2 twin beds, and a fouton.

Suite 2) 2 person (max) - $800 - Queen bed and a fouton

You do need to rent out the entire suite.  Please let me know if you have any further questions or are interested in either option.

I've been sick since Saturday, and it's totally derailled my training.  Sucks.  But the good news is, Daylight Savings Time is only 12 Days away!  The added hour in the evening will help with getting in an extra run after dinner.  Also, the lonnnger days are approaching LP Peeps!   This makes ALL the difference, especially when training for endurance volume.  Here are the sunrise/sunset times ahead of us:

Mar 31, 20126:41 AM7:20 PM
Apr 30, 20125:55 AM7:52 PM
May 31, 20125:27 AM8:21 PM
Jun 30, 20125:28 AM8:31 PM
Jul 22, 20125:44 AM8:21 PM

Right now today we are only looking at 11 hours and 15 mins of sunlight.  Blah(January was only 9 hours and change!!)  Come April we'll be looking at almost 14 hours.  And in June we peak at 15 hours and 5 mins!!  So comparing June to February, there are roughly 28 hours more sunlight per week!!  That's A LOT more training time

DC the enthusiasm is 100% appreciated. You are tracking the sunlight for us! I've hit a period where I need some recovery days. My legs and body are tired. My knees hurt and even my right elbow is feeling some tendinitis from lap swims. A few days of easy workouts for me to get ready for the big push.

I normally eat all day with out the feeling of "fullness," but today I can finally say it has happened! This morning I had a bannana, bagel, egg & rice krispy treat. When lunch came around I had a turkey sandwich, pretzels and strawberries. The department next to mine had a food fest. I couldn't help myself. A half hour after lunch time I went over and helped myself to 2 pieces of pizza and a cookie. This is one of the things I enjoy about IM training, but I sure won't make race weight eating that kind of junk. Some days you just need it! ahhhhhh, I feel satisfied right now. who else has days like this?

So I have a good news bad news post (lessons learned).  I ran a half marathon this past weekend, made a PR by 11 minutes and achieved my best time prediction.  1:42:27  I was very pleased with the results, all good.  I was sticking to my IM plan and didn't train specifically for HM, so my longest run was 8 miles, but stuck this in the schedule as a run fitness test.  My HM was 5 miles longer than my longest run this year and 30 seconds per mile faster than my fastest run, at any miles.  I took off Monday per IM plan as recovery.  I went back to IM plan on Tuesday with a swim and run, swim felt good, on run I was on treadmill and was going at Z1 feeling good, then shin pain.  I took off today from my transition run, still feel pain, doing RICE on it. Not sure how much this will set me back.  Will focus on bike and swim and figure out when I can get back to running.

Lessons learned: prep for any race appropriately, don't increase intensity and duration too much in any workout, recover and slowly ramp back up from a race/intense workout.  All pretty much basics, but we are stressing our bodies and that will only increase over the next build period and we are more susceptible to injuries.   Be safe out there everyone.

Good timing - I was just wondering how many others are trying to lose weight for the race but finding a tough go of it even with the training? Im purposely trying to lose now and hit "goal" weight b/c I don't want to deprive the body when training really ramps up.  Some days are good, others not so much but I do know myself well enough that I can't even start on the cookies after dinner. If I have 1 oreo, it'll be 10. If I can not have any, I'm ok...usually.  Happy March everyone This month I hope to double my bike miles and increase run miles by at least 10 miles. Swim should just about double also. Not on a specific plan yet - just training to be able to do the plan come Spring time.

Tonight my plan called for 1:15 on the bike at 100+ rpms.  This is the first time I've ever tried to ride at that high of a cadence for more than a few minutes.  Normally, on the trainer, I try to ride between 88-93.

Tonight I rode the whole time between 96-99.  Once I went over about 100 or 101, I would start to bounce on the saddle.  After I hit 102 or more, it was like a pogo stick on amphetamines -- I was all over the place and hugely uncomfortable.

Tips?  Thoughts?  Ideas?  I'm pretty sure I am doing something wrong.

Try sitting on the tip of your saddle, add more of your weight on the aero bar. I tried to put more resistance and let my hr pass zone 2 when I first started cause of the bouncing. It's easier now and my hr barely hit zone 2. I used to hate it a lot but now I can spin 100+ cadence for 60mins(I think that was the longest before switching it to Sunday). it takes some practice.

I was like that in the beginning as well, but I think with having to do it every week, I'm starting to get the hang of it.  It seems I have the same problem when I'm first starting out, but then it seems like once the fluid trainer starts to warm up the resistance changes and gets me to settle down so I'm still spinning the same amount but I'm getting just a tade more resistance.  I'm not a spinning kinda of rider I tend to mash more then I probably should, so I'm usually always in the big ring up front (unless I'm going up hills which I heard there were some in LP Smile).  I think the key is to find the right resistance and right gearing that will get you to be able to get to 100rpms and not bounce around, and allow you to be able to do it for the entire time.  I mean how hard can that be Smile
