We have a metric bike event every year that's put on by a local community charity. The rest stops are all at churches.......and the churchgoers BAKE for the rest stops - home made cookies, brownies etc.

Of course, all that SOUNDS like a good idea now.....LOL

What shoes do you wear when you aren't running?  I've been wearing Brooks Cascadias - neutral trail shoes - but they need to be replaced and I think they might be a bit stiff.  I can start walking without the boot as pain permits (a few hours barefoot in the house today!), so I want to get a good shoe.  Tips?

My typical running shoe is pretty heavy, so I'm not sure that would be a great call.  I guess I could get a pair that I run shorter races in? Or one of the lightweight shoes?  It's best for me if I stick with Brooks, but I can go in another direction if necessary.

Hmmm interesting! I don't wear running shoes for anything but running. I'm either barefoot, wearing boots, flats or occasional heels.

Woke up today with the beginnings of a head cold.  Of course, the day before a race.  Grrrrrr.  Zinc, fluids and couch for me today...

For just walking around? I mostly use a couple pairs of Merrell barefoot shoes.

And that avatar is great!

Running-style shoes are super helpful for chasing around toddlers.  I don't want to wear my running shoes at the playground or pumpkin farm.... you get the idea.  So, I usually have a pair that's for the gym (non-running) and general wear and then separate pairs just for running.

Thanks! I got that one and the Yeti from the current series of LEGO minifigs.

I tried the Merrell barefoot shoes.  I didn't particularly like them; I don't think they work well with my foot shape.  I think I'm going with the same idea and ordering a pair of the lightweight Brooks.

The horns of a dilemma.      Earlier this year I had made plans to to the half iron distance triathlon at Goose Pond.  It will be held Oct. 13.    Life got in the way and I shelved those plans months ago.    I've been training without any real goal since early summer.    At present, I can swim 2.4 miles in around 70 minutes.   I can bike a century in just over 6 hours.      So the 1.2 mile swim and the 56 mile bike ride of the half iron man will be no problem.   The problem is that I haven't really been running that much.  Sure, I recently did a 5K in under 25 minutes but that was single event  When I have run else wise it's never more that a couple of miles.      Since I have already paid for this I am sorely tempted to do it.    This is really not the dilemma though.   There is also, on the same day, a half marathon at Little River Canyon.   This is one of the most scenic rivers in America.  I am more than tempted to do this run, just to show to myself that I can do it.    I would even go easy and just be satisfied with a two hour finish.

Really, I'm just itching to compete.       Both these events are in Northeast Alabama and October is the most gorgeous month of the year in these parts.   It's in the mountains and hardwood forests that will be exploded with the colors of the season.

All trained up, and ready to dance....  I kinda like this dilemma.  Cool

So proud of my little athlete - he came third in his tri yesterday.  Beaten by the great Joey Lampe.  Kieran was second out of the water, second on the bike but 11th on the run.  He said he still felt cooked from his HIM two weeks ago.  But i think he gets like $200 or something for third so that's good.

I got me some new buddies today:

Waxy Monkey Tree Frogs! One was a bit worn out from the transport home apparently....

They are still pretty small now, but will grow to be about the size of the palm of one's hand. They also secrete a waxy substance (hence the name... Undecided) and remind me of plastic frogs. I have been wanting to either have some of my own or at least work with them for a long time--it just so happens that there were some available (and CHEAP!) at the reptile show today! Smile

Hey all, I hope the weekend was good to you.

Jen - most of the time outside of running shoes is spent in dress shoes (work), flip flops, bare feet or really old running shoes.

Janyne - Have you been keeping up with Fatty's race report? Thanks for the intro a while back.

Salty - Enjoy day 1 at your new gig!

I hope all of our racers had a great time and that the DL healed a bit. I'm getting back to it after last week's near nothingness. Enjoy whatever your week may bring.

Good morning,
My crazy incredibly fit sister convinced me to do the Gore Mountain Leaf Cruncher Trail Race on Saturday, and I am still out of breath from it!! It was incredibly hard - technical, and hills that had me gasping, even though I was walking up them! I did a report if anyone is interested.

Going to skip today's run, wish I could get into the lake or a pool, but don't have time or a pool membership. I am really sore still.

BTW, could anyone explain to me how the Inspires work? Thanks!

Hi again,
I am running 3 times a week, just added intervals, and I gained 4 pounds since Friday!! Did a hard race, and gain weight? I think I have to add some spinning - when I was spinning about 5 years ago, I lost 20 pounds in about 8 weeks. My fear is that the spinning will wreck my legs for my runs. But if I don't lose 20 pounds, I am going to be stuck being slow and discouraged.

Ideas? Suggestions for how to schedule this? Thanks so much, I really appreciate the spirit of all of you!

Nancy, I am right there with ya. I got on the scale this morning and it groaned at me

My program for the next few months is running based. So, I will build slowly over the next few weeks to about 20 miles a week, which will end up being 4 or 5 runs a week. I'll ride the bike about 2 or 3 times a week during that time as well, but nothing too drastic or fast. TW and I are working on food intake as well. We both have short and long term goals, so we are in it together, which really helps me. One of the things I focus on is the fit of my pants and such. I may not see it on the scale as much as I feel it.  When I run I just feel stronger and better and I think my clothes fit a bit better as well. Another thing I do is try to keep the post workout hunger away. I try to have a glass of choc milk or a protein shake shortly after running and then get away from the kitchen. And I log my food here, as I find that really keeps me accountable to myself.

It is a challenge indeed, keep working on it.

Nancy, if you want to send one to someone, go to their training log by clicking the avatar and selecting "Go To Training Log" from the flyout. As you scroll down into the log, you should see "Inspire Me" at the top of the day. Or, if you want to reply to one that was sent to you, use the "Reply" button that is on the right side of their message to you. That will take you into their log and pop up the Inspire dialog box.

And if I have confused you terribly, just wait for someone like Judi to give better instructions, as she is the Master of the Inspire. Smile
