Using PostgreSQL.  Column definition is numeric(4,0), so I can't add anything greater than 9,999.

But, I need to add in values greater than that.  Is there a way to modify the column defintion to numeric(5,0) without dropping and readding the column?  There's too much data in this table to do that.

Ah, just as I suspected....

I have no idea.

None of the useful stuff got covered in my DB class either.  Just theory.

Aikidoman - 2008-09-18 3:17 PM I think I lost my Ipod shuffle yesterday...  Cry
those darn things need homing devices

I think I might have left it on top of a gym locker while searching through my bag and walked away without it.

It grew legs and took off to find a new home, I'm afraid....

To be honest, I forgot how much I paid for it so I thought it was $150 down the drain.  but I just looked at the Ipod store, $69 bucks....  Not as bad as I thought to get a replacement...  That's only about 5 drinks on the strip.  Still sucks though...

I believe

ALTER TABLE table_name
 MODIFY column_name column_type;

i.e.

ALTER TABLE supplier
 MODIFY supplier_name   varchar2(100)     not null;

I believe since you are making the column bigger not smaller it shouldn't be a problem.  Different databases handle it better than others.  (I am a bit rusty though)

Maybe highlight the column, right click, and edit?

Right!  And then I just copy and paste all my data in there!

Thanks!!!  I'll have to boot up the development server and try that out tomorrow.  Trying it on the production server is a way to get to get kicked out of school without a degree...

you can use the Alter table command to do that and not drop any data.

Yes!  I keep a development server around for things like this.  I'll dump the DB as it stands now so I can restore it if things go horribly wrong.

Which reminds me that I need to burn a CD of the current iteration of the production server.

If you want.  Either way, I still have to try it on ours before my adviser is going to sign off on it.
