How do I work the weak spot of dealing with really warm pools at times? Had to be well up in the 80's. I honestly can't remember one being this warm except for a hot spring fed one at a water park in Colorado. I'm much cooler in long shirt, long pants and jacket than just standing in the water at the pool edge. Frustrating as I was set to do quite a bit tonight, cut it way short instead.

Good luck Salty and Mike!  Salty, I hope you have a great race, a great time, and the competitive part of you.  You have worked really hard and you deserve to let yourself whoop some XC a$$!

I am going to be working on some different weaknesses over the next little while.

1. Get outta bed for that AM workout

2. Less TV.  I have re-enrolled in a Calculus II course I failed in the spring and between that, work, training, I need to turn off the tube.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Yikes. Do you have any other options? I am going to have an opposite problem tomorrow. 36 degrees and 25 MPH winds. Brrrrrrrrr gonna freeze my shorts off.

Ben I have the same problem the pool that I have been swimming at is heated it 32*C (that's 90*F) I find I get really dehydrated really quickly so make sure you take and drink water during your session.

I thought that I would get used to it but it is getting worse now that it's summer so I am looking for a new pool.

My kids would love swimming in those pools.  They say 3-4x/week how great it would be to have swim practice in the hot tub.

I have noticed that when the pools are warm like that, it's not only uncomfortable, but my heart rate just gets jacked.  I'm not a "real" swimmer who loves low 70s, but if it's over 80, it definitely feels to warm.  Hope you guys can find other options.

Heh, that sounds just about ideal to me

We swim in an outdoor pool that's heated in the winter. When it's 30-something degrees outside, the pool feels amazing. When it's 60-something degrees outside, heating it seems like an after thought -- they get it going, but the middle of the pool is cold and the edges are warm, so I find it terribly uncomfortable to swim in. When it's 90-something outside (pretty much from May through September), the pool feels awesome.

I ran this morning....it was in the low-50's. I'm a whiner when it comes to being cold, but I'm at least making the effort this year! Not sure I could bring myself to ride outside today (honestly, hoping there will be some decent Black Friday sales so I can convince myself to buy some cold weather clothing!).

Ben, I've been thinking more about this. Do a lot of people swim laps at your pool? Maybe you could get them all to complain to the pool people about how hot it is.

Had a great morning.  Was going to do a 5k with my son but my wife wanted him to sleep in so I went solo.  Since I'm coming off a sore tendon my goal was to just take it easy and not aggravate anything.  Ran very comfortably and was only 30 seconds off my PR a few weeks ago.  Paced it perfectly with a 15 second negative split and had a bit of a kick at the finish.  It was a more difficult course and was 28 degrees out so I actually felt better about this race than my PR.  Also super excited that I can get back to my original training plan.

Nice work Steve! Glad to hear your back at it. Had a wild day myself. 30+ mph winds and temps below freezing. Got to toe the line with Kara Goucher. Never thought I'd be talking race strategy with an Olympian whil I'm taking my pants off... Anyway the course was not really to my strengths but I ran well. Learned a lot!

Steve!  That sounds like a very good race, and that's awesome news about your leg.  Sahweet!

Salty--How freakin cool is that?  "Hey Kara, what's up?  Oh yeah, just a little Saturday morning race?  Cool.  Me too.  Good luck."  LOL.  I'm trying to be patient while I wait for your RR...is it up yet?

Is it up yet?

Is it up yet?

No pressure ;)

Weakness update: I went for a run last night and was PAIN FREE for the first time in over 6 weeks!  I might have run a little to fast as a celebration, but I was so freeakin pumped.  And guess what?  Still feels good today.  Gaining on it :)

Nice race, Steve! Must feel great coming off a little injury scare....glad to hear things are working themselves out.

I'm with Elesa....anxiously waiting to read Salty's RR

And a run with no pain, Elesa? That's fantastic!! Now do yourself a favor and keep yourself in check so you don't go back to having pain It's hard, I know....but you can do it!!

We had our tri club party last night....was a lot of fun! We were up late (and there might have been a cake fight at the end of the night....hah!), but I got up in the morning and took my dogs for a nice run. It's very encouraging to see my paces coming down and my knee tolerating the running pretty well. I'm getting really excited for next season. I already did a bunch of foam rolling earlier today, but I'll be doing some strength work tonight -- capping off my planned three sessions for the week.

Congrats on the races Salty and Mike!

Switch, sounds like you're on the mend. Congrats!

I got in a long swim this morning at the pool during a kids' swim meet. It was loud, wavy, really distracting, and quite humbling, but I'm glad I got it in. I also did an hour on the spin bike. I may have picked the wrong two week period to work on my bike weakness. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Great job on the hour on the bike Gretchen and your swim sounds just like doing a tri.

Great races Mike and Salty.

Elesa great to hear that your leg is finally getting better, now don't over do it or you will be back to square one.

I had a good day yesterday, did an hour on my bike on the trainer, which made me five from six days so far this week, just got to do a run today. I can now say I drink my tea "white with 1" rather than with 2-3 sugars so I am happy with this.

Also yesterday I started making Christmas Cookies for work, after making and icing about 180 of them I decided that they didn't look good enough to give away and it was a dumb idea. Normally I would have put them in my cupboard and eaten them ALL over the next week, but yesterday I picked them all up and threw them in the bin!

Quite a variety of people use the pool. Not too many are really *that* into swimming, actually. A good number just like being in the water for a bit, plus the water aerobics people. This hot was actually an exception to the norm for this place. And to give a better picture, this is actually one gym of several in a fitness chain. There are 3 of them at least sorta close to me. Closest one seems to have the most trouble with clear water, keeping the temp down some, and keeping the pool open. The other two do a better job on all these accounts, but would add in an extra 25-30 minutes of driving on weeknights where I'm already riding for several hours. They've been rather good over the past coupe years, a touch warmer than I'd like (they're not competition pools), but can still easily work in them. This is the first time I can remember an issue with either one of these two, so guess it kind of freaked me as they've been so dependable.

Morning All!

RE: pool temps. I swim at a university pool, so the varsity team gets to set the temp during the year, but in the off season there is always a question board that asks about pool and air temps. If you feel either is too cold/warm, you are allowed to leave a comment. If there is a general trend, the powers that be will change things.

Long run this morning in 16F temps. Too cold to even think about taking the dog, so it was a pretty smooth, but boring run. Long ride this afternoon, which I have to try to squeeze in between football games I'm interested in. First lactate test on the plan!

Happy training!

16 degrees = brrrrr.  It is sunny and mid-40's this afternoon here.  Just got back from a nice 8 mile run with some strides at the end.

The duathlon featured rain, 15mph wind, and a temperature of 43 degrees.  It was a mess, but I had fun with it.  I won my age group and placed 4th overall, but looking at the field that's about where I expected to be.

I had a great 18.3 mile run this morning.  It was a cool 32 degrees, but I made sure I wore enough layers.  I had some people run with me for the first hour, and I managed to actually feel stronger as I was finishing the run and averaged about 7:35 for my overall pace.  I think I finally got this long run thing down.

That board is an AWESOME idea.  My main pool is usually good, but once in a while it is ridiculous, and the lifeguards are some of the most apathetic employees I have run into in a long time.

16 degree run is tough.  I hope your ride was good and the LT test went well :

Nicole, your consistency is really impressive, and it looks like it's paying off.  I'm getting excited for your season too! :)

Your tri club sounds fun.  It is very hard for me to imagine ours breaking out into a cake fight.

What kinds of stuff does your club do?  How many of the rest of you are in a local tri club?

Ok Stacey, my supportive team response is:  Great Job and congrats on the willpower!!!! You Rock!!

My other, not so helpful thought is...Oh, how could you????? You threw them out???? There is no such thing as a sugar cookie that isn't good enough to eat. Broken cookies taste the best. Ugly cookies taste the best. I love it when people make me cookies. Even ugly, broken cookies. I wish I lived closer to you. Dang, I wish I had some sugar cookies.

And now back to supportive. Great job not eating the whole batch! I don't know that I could have pulled that off. In terms of impact, reducing the sugar in your daily tea will make a difference over time. Making those types of simple changes can really help.

Ok, my quoting skills above are weak and attempts to fix it just made things worse.

Congrats to the racers this weekend! Some speedy performances for sure. Saw Ben's rr (leader of the pack) and look forward to a few more. Life has been getting in the way a bit, but I finally got on the bike today. It was in the mid-20's and windy so stayed indoors. After re-synching everything, fiddling with magnets/sensors etc I finally got TR to work and did a 2x20 threshold workout. I guesstimated FTP and based on HR was probably close enough for now.  It was a bit humbling after not riding for over 2 months but it's a start.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
