bonbeebe - 2008-09-18 3:33 PM Me too.  For those that are returning...did you like your hotel?  If so, where did you stay?

The Galt House is race HQ and I highly reccomend it.  I really liked being right in the middle of things.  The expo is there, registration is there, bike tech is there, medical is there, massages are there and a whole like of fellow triathletes are there.  If you go to Disney World, get a Disney hotel is you want the whole Disney experience and if you do an IM, stay at race host hotel.  This statement is obviously my opinion and I could be wrong...but I don't think so.  :-)

So long as they don't shut down two elevators for a wedding in the rivue tower during bike check in time.

I'm new to posting, but I have been lurking for months. IMKY will be my 1st IM. I have done numerous sprints and Olys and am doing Longhorn half 5 Oct, Disney 1/2 in Janand  Eagleman 1/2 next Jun. I have made resv at the Galt House for the IM. I plan on using the Iron Fit trainging program for IMKY. Any goods, bads or others with this program. Oh, what's up with drinking a Coke during the IM? Do you practice doing this? Thanks, I am a sponge for anyone's advice. Jim

I will be swim focused this winter, that is my weak spot. Plus I chipped a bone in my ankle 2 weeks ago and the doc said no running for 6-8 weeks. But I can still bike. I was hoping to do a 1/2 mara in Oct. but not now.
I am looking forward to growing with all of you over the next year in this great sport.

I'm new to this site but have been lurking for awhile while training for IMKY.  IMKY 2008 was my first Ironman and am glad to report that I crossed the finish line in one piece.  Earlier today I stumbled upon the IMKY 2009 registration page and then happened to accidentally enter my credit card information and press the Register button.  So I guess I'm in for '09.

I'm still waiting for my legs to come back from this year's race.  I had a great experience though.  Already looking forward to August 30th.

Oh my goodness!  I'd not heard that.  It was bad enough with only 4 elevators in the east tower.   That's a good point...the elevators at the Galt House suck!  I made the mistake this year of requeting a room on the highest floor possible so I'd have a good view of the city/river.  I did have a great view...but I paid for it dearly having to wait for an elevator all weekend.  So...if you do stay at the Galt House, request a room on the lower floors where you can use the stairs or escaltors.

Plenty of time to talk about game day....right now we need to be talking training plans and how to maintain your base thru the winter months.  :-)

Since I brought it up....my plan is to focus on running this winter and not just maintain but build my running base by training for a couple of 1/2 marys and maybe a full marathon too.  I will ride on Saturdays as long as it is not too cold and/or wet.   Pretty much no swimming till early spring.

So what is your 'winter plan' on the road to IMKY 2009?

~Mike

Hey Mike -

I'm starting pretty much from ground zero with this.  Gulp.  I did a ton of s/b/r trianing about 17 years ago and then basically nothing until this past January when I got on a treadmill.

So I will spend this winter trying to develop a base as my body allows.  The core of my weekly plan will be one long easy ride plus one long easy run.  Goal is to start each of these sessions with fresh legs and increment them on a weekly basis according to feel.  To fill out each week, mid-October I plan to start swimming about 3x/week.  I haven't done any swimming - other than with my kids - for about 18 years, and this is the part I'm most uncertain about.  On top of these three basic elements, I'll throw in additional b/r sessions as body/time permit, trying to make sure they don't interfere with the long run/bike.

And that's pretty much it.  I'm making this up as I go, so happy to listen to suggestions.  One thing I haven't figured out yet is how to incorporate "easy" periods into my schedule.  Like, 1 every four weeks?  Every five?  By feel?  Probably need to buy a good book.

I can't wait to get going. I look forward to learning as much from you guys that have done IM's before. I will be following 13 weeks to a 13 hour Ironman plan. I will start traing though around November after my legs recoup from the Chicago marathon. Any of you guys doing this live near Crystal Lake Il?

Your first lesson should have been "Don't be an idiot like us and sign up for an Ironman".
