This evening's weather was perfect for my first outdoor ride of 2010. How nice to be on a bike that MOVES! Cold wind in the face, running nose, watering eyes.....burning quads....YEAH! Sure beats spinning in a dark room with blaring music. Racine gave me reason to keep up a base over the winter. I must work on my swimming speed, though. Can swim 65 minutes now, but just making the 3min/100yd pace. Will have a coach look at my stroke next week. Intimidating, but must be done. Yes, lots of work to do.....but how refreshing after a long winter!

I think the Raddison is the closest.  There are not many hotels with availabilty left that are close.  Good Luck.

chasingkona - 2010-03-09 7:30 PM Now that the weather is finally starting to warmup who wants to roll the course with me later this month?

Post the date when your gonna ride... I'll ride it with you

I will let you know when I have some time free to head down...maybe a Saturday ride in April? What kind of pace do you usually go at? I know the course is flat but I just want to roll the course to know what to expect

18-20  roads will be open so not too fast.  I live close and have a bar in Racine, so its easy for me to get on the course.  I'm pretty open in April.   Course -wise;  I just road the IM Louisville course last weekend, and that course makes  this one look like a sprint oval.

I booked at the Super 8 on Washington:

Super 8 Racine

Hwy 20 & Oakes Rd
Racine, WI 53406 US
Phone: 262-884-0486
Fax:262-884-0487
Check them out online and book, I just did it online.

Hello,
I just rode the course or what I assume is the bike course yesterday in Racine (playing a little hookey).  It was windy and a little hilly.  I live in the Bull Valley Illinois area so hills are a necessary evil.  This is my first Tri, and I have the honor of doing it as a 50 year old.  I have been involved since November with the Multisport Madness group in Huntley at the Healthbridge fitness club.  This has been very helpful.

Next weekend Ill go out and run the Racine running course with a friend just to get that out of the way and see the sights.

I also just got reservations at a hotel in Racine.  I tried to get a B&B but they were all sold out.  I suggest making reservations pronto if you plan on it.

Maybe we can organize some "first 1/2 IMers" rides???

I plan on riding the  course a few times and would definitely be up for a BT group ride.

This is also my first HIM and indeed, it will only be my second triathlon (I'm planning on doing an Oly in spring).  I'm doing it simply because it is the closest 70.3 to Chicago. I had entertained thoughts of doing Steelhead, but that falls on my bday and I figured that if I bonked or performed poorly it would be a pretty rough way to spend a bday.

As for my goals, I am doing this first and foremost to get myself fit.  Performance is also a top priority- I will be racing and have a certain time that I will be trying to crack.

Someone mentioned that the run goes through a zoo.  I did not know this...if its a hot day, can you imagine having to run through  pockets of elephant dung stench?!  Seems like a good way to get participants to puke...

Hi Guys!

I am in again.... this will be my 5th time doing the race... did it  2006/2007/2008/2009. I'm excited that it's finally become a 70.3 event because I'm hoping someone will be able to measure the swim accurately. That *should* be included in the $300 entry fee... shouldn't it? Surprised

Times have been historically fast due to a chronically short swim. It's always been a good 8-10 minutes fast.

The water can be chilly, but not that bad, so don't worry about it. I've done it all 4x in a sleeveless wetsuit. No problem.

The bike is flattish. Some very slight rollers, but it's easy to draft. Don't do it. One of the main problems many people have with this race is the tendency of a PELOTON to form. Not much in the way of hills to break up the waves of racers. If you are slower, stay to the right, if you are faster, PASS. Don't suck wheels!

The run is mostly flat... out and back x2 to a turn around near a lighthouse. You will see all of your friends several times on the run. Make sure you high 5 them as you go past each other! There are a couple of pretty steep hills on the run... one almost right out of transition, and the other... not long after the first one, if I remember correctly. Bur other than that, pancake flat. You will have to go up each hill 2x, as it's an out and back x2.

As far as the zoo is concerned... it's no big deal... you don't even get to see any animals, really... which is kind of a bummer. You run around the back of the zoo... it almost seems like a service access walkway to me... or something.

One of my favorite races! I'm excited to be doing it again this year!

Hey Wizzzzz Good to see you are doing this! I am very excited!

I would also like to join in on some rides....but I am not so fast on my bike yet! Did my first outdoor ride on Thursday..it was beautiful! Road with a friend and avg. around 17, but that was with some chit chatting and I felt great and could have pushed harder, we did 30 miles in Shorewood and I could have gone longer.

Most of Racine's hotels are close to I94 on Hwy 20.  Not exactly close, but managable.  There's a MicroTel across from the Mall on Hwy 11 (Durand Ave).  Its along the same lines as the Super 8.  smallish, affordable.

Obviously, it depends on our lovely midwest weather that can go either way as we all know, but I am thinking I would like to go up and ride the weekend of May 15/16, either day.

Anyone else have interest??

Would love to do it before then, but I am busy every weekend from now until the 15/16.

Let me know...hope everyone is doing well!!

Congrats on signing up Jayhawk!!

1/2 mile section of the bike course (in the beginning , rough section in front of zoo) is being resurfaced this spring/summer. Start date is supposed to be next week. Larger sections have been marked up as if more main street woudl be done , but this was I all I could find as of right now.

I'm stoked!!

My plan calls for about 2 more weeks of base phase, then I'm in to the build phase.  Peak starts June 27 for 2 weeks, then starting a progressive 2 week taper.

I feel like I'm ahead on the swim and run, but am probably a little behind on the bike.   Gotta get that time in the saddle!

Swim: I'm there.

Bike: building distance, but at 35 miles now, and adding 5 miles each long ride without too much trouble (main limiter has been enough light early in the morning, as I try to be back home in time to be with my kids when they wake up; dawn should be early enough now that I can get in some 40+ rides soon).  Not worried, I'll be there by July.

Run: trying to stay calm.  Had worked up to 11 miles at a solid pace (for me, run is definitely my weakest).  Ran on the treadmill (which I usually don't do) last Friday and my achilles is pretty sore.  Taking at least a week off to rest it, with just biking and swimming.  I'm hoping that it will feel OK after some rest and I can get back into it without too much disruption.  Deep breaths . . . patience.

Feeling ready for the swim.

The run is coming along nicely, had some arch issues so just building up each week. Starting next week I be doing the first lap of the actual course from now until race day. I'm lucky in that I can walk to the T area from my house and do the run from there.

The bike needs work, longest long ride was around 34 and slashed my rear tire on Sunday, so I missed my ride there. Like the run I've been training on the bike course so at the minimum I should know where every pot hole is on the course.

****OWS*****
A group of non BTers and I usually start doing morning Lake Michigan swims in June if anyone is interested, mainly during the week , but would be open to some weekend work as well. There is buoy line near the zoo that we use to pratice sighting and getting use to the water.

I'm staying on track with the plan.  Two a days are getting harder to get in with the rest of the families schedules. Because of this  I have had to ride on the trainer more than I would like to.  I just keep telling myself the trainer is better than not training.
Stay healthy and injury free everyone.

Well...doing two a days already you are in much better shape than us.

I just did a tri this past weekend a little sprint that gave me that first "I am ready" burst this year.  I have a marathon on Saturday...then nothing for awhile so its hard work time after the marathon!
