for those of you who have raced eagleman before...how has the wind been on the bike? just moved to va beach and the winds down here where i ride have been kicking! lot of open fields and not much to knock the wind down. yesterday, without pedaling, i was pushed backwards going down a bridge overpass. it was tough to keep it on the road with a 30 knot crosswind. cant even imagine trying disc wheels in that kind of wind.

thanks for the tips for dealing with PF.

I've raced EMan twice, once during the heat and no real winds and the other when we had a headwind of around 15 mph+ for nearly 25 miles. While I agree the heat was an issue on the run, I thought the constant headwinds wore me down on the return portion of the bike the next year I did it. Winds can be squirrely in different parts of the course, especially near the wildlife refuge. I don't remember seeing folks with disc wheels due to the possibility of winds, but do see a good number with 40mm to 60mm rim wheels, depending on the wind conditions. I only have 30mm so, the winds don't really come into play for me. You might want to consider bringing a couple of sets and decide based on the day's forecasted conditions.

For those of you that have raced EM, how is the swim? Current, jellyfish, etc. Ive heard its brackish water, but that is about it. Beach start?

In water start.  Water tastes like a$$.  The years I've done it, no jellies.  Mild current.  More of a wind current and/or a bit of a current on the way back in.

I think they changed it two years ago (2009) when they redid the dock there, so unless they changed it again, we begin on the small beach to the left as you enter the parking area (not the one near the playground) but the one that you see as you head out on the half marathon. I then goes out cuts right and then comes back.

Mike someone said they changed the swim course this year? Correct?

I am not sure when they changed it but yes it's different from the last time I did the race in 2008.

The swim was the same as this one but in reverse.  You use to have to swim out from that playground area and then up the boat ramp.  This looks like a much shorter run to the transition area then before.  So I'd expect T1 times to be about 40-60 seconds faster if your racing.

Thanks. The biggest determinant of a swim time is the the current of course, but that is something none of us can control.

The more current the better.  I'm hoping for 5 foot swells with rip tides and strong current.  Any separation I get in the swim is just more time the runners need to put into me on the bike/run...

Fred Doucette - 2011-03-09 6:26 PM Funny I'm looking for calm waters with a current helping us all the way. That way the swimmers won't get too much of a lead on me

In the mean time you better get to the pool more often!

As long as they do not cancel the swim I will be happy, but I am not as worried about the current as I am about the temperature of the water. West suit legal? It always seems to be right on the edge.

I am really hoping that they make the RIGHT decision.  It seems like they did last year.  I know in 2008 they made the wrong call and people started the day off in a bad spot.  I'm one of them.

I agree, but last year's swim course was pretty rough as far as current goes. I am a 30-32 min HIM swimmer and I swam 40 min. last year. I know it affects everyone, but a really strong swimmer is far less affected by a current.

Everyone should be prepared for a non-wetsuit swim at this race though.

Last year I was swimming breaststroke in order to hold position on the line before the start.

The speed and direction of the current all depends on the tide on race morning - and to a lesser extent recent rainfall.

Recent rainfall is crucial! I remember three years ago in 2009 they were thinking of canceling since a storm had rolled through two nights before, but race morning it was as calm as a lake and as warm as one too. It was not wet suit legal for pros but it was for age groupers thankfully.

Sounds like fun, but I live 5 hours away, so no.

How goes your training Daniel?

-eh- Family matters changed this from an A race to about a B+ race for me. I've gone from "gonna match my fastest HIM" to "Wanna beat the cut offs"

Still within my weight goals, though, so the important stuff is working

I'll tell 'em the same thing I told Chrissie at Timberman, "It'll be an honour to have my butt kicked by you today."
