This is Belly he's of undetermined origin, some Schnauzer, some bird dog, some whole bunch of other stuff. We call him an Irish Drinking Terrier because he'll steal your beer.

The photo is great. I know the look well. She's saying "Despite how it looks, I swear I didn't make this mess."

This is Sitka Dog. We think she's part pit, part some sort of herding dog. She was rescued at 8ish months. She just turned 6. My daughter and I argue daily about whose dog she is.

Photos:
- Izzy sharing popcorn with Sitka.
- Sitka has become an excellent trail dog. Here she is leading the way for my buddy Lou.
- Day Sitka came home with us. She was burned by her previous owner.
- Day we brought Izzy home for the hospital.
- First mountain bike ride. It took about 2.5 years of training before she was ready to be off leash. She still wears a remote training collar but I can't remember the last time it was used.
- Riding in the car. She gets very upset if I take my mountain bike and don't take her.

One more, after a ride. This was not staged. She pulled the pillow off the couch while I was showering.

Haha at least yours is smart!  Mine will completely ignore the dog bed and the futon that he's allowed to jump on and sleep on the hardwood floor.  Kind of makes me wonder why I spend so much money on a nice bed for him...

Beautiful dogs!

I vascillate between wanting a dog and enjoying the lack of responsibility. Not having to be home at a certain time, taking off for several days, etc. Then again, if I get a dog I know I'll enjoy having that responsibility. I live alone and it would be all on me to care for the animal for the next 20 years or so.

I need to make a plan. I think.

It depends on what breed you get. My Great Dane has a life expectency of 8-10 years, if I'm lucky. My lab is 10-12. I have a small mixed breed that will be 16 the end of October.

Yes they are a lot of responsibility, especially if you get a puppy, but to me all of the work is totally worth it.

If you really wanted a dog, but didn't want to go through the puppy phase, there are rescue agencies everywhere. I'm not talking typical SPCA. I'm talking about organizations that rescue specific breeds of dogs. Most of the time they are fostered in homes and have had some training before they are adopted out.

It's a big commitment, and only you can decide if having a pet is right for you. Good luck.

My last dog - a mutt - lived to be 20 yrs old.

I'd go with a rescue dog.

Puppy or grown, doesn't really matter.

It's the commitment. I think I've become a commitment-phobe.

I have 3 cats but I'm not worried about introducing a dog into the mix (used to have 2 cats and 2 dogs).

Yes, we rescued our mal, and she's been great.  We had to do a LOT of training, but it's been worth it.  Mals in general are a LOT of work, not a beginner dog.

If you're interested in getting a dog, definetely do research on the breed.  Some breeds will destroy your home if they don't get enough exercise (pretty well known fact) and/or mental stimulation (not so well known fact).

Trying this picture thing again...I've been having issues.  First is our boy Kobe, a wire-haired Jack Russell Terrier and pit bull mix.  He'll be 9 next month.

Second is our baby girl Kaylee.  Border Lab who will be 2 years old next month.  She was supposed to be my SAR dog, but as a rescue, she's got too many issues for it.  We're working on agility instead.

If I get a dog, she's going on the trails with me. And running. I might name her Ramona. Or Scout. Maybe Harper.

I want a dog. I just can't pull the trigger on bringing one home.

Whoever said you can't buy happiness forgot about puppies.

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.
