Rode about 25 miles of the course yesterday (from where Tody Goodwin Road intersects Beaver Creek until where the course turns right on Holly Springs Road from Highway 55). 

My suggestion is conserve, conserve, conserve.  Do NOT try to crush the hills on Avent Ferry leading up to Hwy. 55, as you will have many more hills coming after that. 

The first hill of any real consequence on the course is climbing up on New Hill-Holleman Road towards Harris Lake County Park.  That is near mile 22 on the course.

In the coming weeks, I will add in more sections of the course, to get a feel for the post-Holly Springs hills.  Also in the works is hitting the run course in coming weeks for long runs.  Will keep touching base here for folks that might be interested in Saturday or Sunday morning runs starting and ending downtown.

Yes, if you ride the full course.  As I was cutting off the 2nd half of the course, I needed to have a way to get off 55 without going all the way up into Apex on a 4-lane highway with lots of construction.  So, at a stoplight, with stopped traffic, we crossed the highway and walked our bikes across the grass median, then continued along Green Oaks Parkway into the business park where Carolina Brewing Company is located.  Then had to do it again at Irving Parkway.  This is because Holly Springs has gone to a superstreet approach in this area to prevent intersections as we know them.  Everything is a right turn, then a u-turn, instead of left turns across traffic as we know them.

So, yes, you can without crossing medians, but we chose not to.  Personal call.

Loaded the participant list into Excel today to be able to do some analysis.  Based on the data supplied by Ironman, there are 2643 registered participants (930 female, 1713 male, no blanks   ).  In my age group (M40-44), there are 682 total.

Top 10 states by participants:

There are 53 participants who do not list their state.  Of the 1589 NC participants, 512 are female, 1077 are male.

Largest age group?  M40-44 at 455.  M45-49 at 320.  M35-39 has 309.  M30-34 195.

Does it break out relay participants separately?

I'm thinking that this will be the biggest bicycle race the triangle has ever seen.

That's an interesting statement.  Care to elaborate?

Just find it interesting that the biggest number of bikes in one event in the triangle is part of a half-iron and it took an IM branded race to make it happen, not a bike race, not a rally, not a charity ride.  Just interesting, that's all.  Motorists around the route will probably be having a WTF moment.

Good point.  I have not seen anything in their materials that states road closures either, so it's going to be a WHOLE lot of angry motorists, especially on the 2-lane roads between Harris Lake and downtown Raleigh.  Anyone else know if WTC normally closes the roads?

Hey gang-

I have an engagement with my antique Ford downtown Raleigh this Saturday 1/4 mile from the run start, so I thought, what the heck, let's go ahead and do a run course preview.  

So, if anyone's interested in joining me, I plan to start at 10:45am at the Performing Arts Center and run the entire course.  My plan is somewhere in the 8-8:30 min/mile range, but can drift up or down if needed.

I plan to carry a gel or two, and stop as needed for water along the way (plenty of restaurants that will likely offer to top off a handheld bottle if needed).

Post back (or PM me) if you want to join so I'll know who to look for.  I'll be wearing a bright green Umstead Marathon shirt (THE TICK!) in honor of Saturday's running of the 10th annual Umstead Trail Marathon (my first time in 5 years not running or volunteering there).
