Kido - 2013-01-10 1:51 PM How can one catch up?  Hulu?  Netflicks?  Hopefully they are on demand on DirecTV

Like TriToy said, Amazon Prime is $1.99 per episode or $11.99 for the season, I think.

My library has seasons 1 & 2, obviously free! I just looked.

OMG, Love, Love, Love this show since Day 1.  The setting, the costumes.  And Maggie Smith, hilarious.

Not to re hijack the TV thread, but I find the "I don't watch TV" superiority thing funny.  I'm out of the closet.  I LOVE TV.  I watch a LOT of it. I also volunteer at a domestic violence shelter, working on getting to Therapaws therapy dogs, and my local Buddhist Center.  I read about an hour before bed. I work full time.   And I am marathon training.

So Fooey if I want to watch a bunch of mindless TV, like Downton, the Mentalist, Elementary, Person of Interest, and Law & Order.

I FINALLY got to watch this last night.   I thought it was extremely good, even better than seasons past.  I love how they gloss right over boring details like the wedding.  Quick walk up to the alter - bam, coming home from the honeymoon.  Doing that, and the 2 hours no commercials, it's a lot of story!

Anyway, Dame Maggie is such a hoot.  She could announce she's going to the bathroom and it would be funny.  I love Shirley MacLaine's character, but her face is so distracting (the makeup, the huge mouth, etc).   I loved the smug satisfaction she had at the end when she knew she's caused a bunch of trouble and didn't get dragged into the Downton foolishness.

Okay, so let's say you are a rich Lord who invests a bunch of money in a business.  As foolish as that might have been, where are your advisors and why aren't the watching your investment?  Why didn't someone say "Hey, there's a new CEO, things look sketchy, maybe you should pull out?"  I don't think it was an immediate crash, a la 1929.   I'd be pissed if I were him.

I am THRILLED for Edith.  I was yelling at Lord Grantham saying "Just do it so you can get rid of her!"

I think Lady Mary's marriage is going to be have lots of trouble.  Foreshadowed by the eye peek the night before.

I agree that the last prison scene was 1) for Bates to establish himself, and 2) a red herring.   Although, if it came down to him be the actual killer, I wouldn't be shocked.  He acts very impulsively.     I so much love Anna and I hate this pairing with Bates!

I also think Elizabeth McGovern is a hoot.  Her facial expressions kill me.

I wonder what the angle is with the old maid who had the baby and showed up at Lady Crawley's latest charity.  Something's up there.

Now, for the big question:  Does anyone think that Matthew should NOT give his money to save Downton?  I think he should.  1) He could then make it his life's mission to grow the money and ultimately "give back" the donations.  2)  Who else would it go to, anyway?   Someone else as unrelated/unimportant to the Squires?  Silly, just take it.

Being in the US is very frustrating.  So has everyone seen Season 3 other than us who waited to watch it on PBS?  I see there are episode recaps and everything.  Are you ahead in Canada too?  Although I admit a lot of confusion because Season 2 ended with at Christmas too.

Most of us are in America and have NOT seen Season 3. First episode just aired last Sunday. We must wait week my week ....unless we are Tritoy ....she has Season 3 on DVD!

I preordered Season 3 on DVD....Amazon says it comes out on 29 Jan but I know it's already out in the UK...so...I guess there are other ways to get it.  I should have it 29 Jan apparently. :D

When they went and visited "Downton place", I agreed with Branson - that was a damn nice house lol.  And I wondered what the rent would be with those grounds...

It had to be astronomically expensive to run that estate - you've got the main house, all it's staff, and what ever taxes you have to pay on it (was there Edwardian property tax?) - then you own "half the village", a house in London with a small staff, and a few of these "retreats".  Sure, you could rent some of them out - they probably make a bit renting out to all the townsfolk - but you couldn't rent out the house in London cause what if your banker calls before diner and you have to head down there tomorow?  You can't kick a renter out for a night or two on such short notice.  A picnic is one thing...

Just getting caught up on the episodes for season 3 now and loving it!

Interesting that now the thought is that Vera Bates committed suicide - though I'm not sure I buy into that line of thinking.  On the one hand, I can see her being so evil as to take her own life for the sole purpose of framing her husband as she hated him that much - but it also seemed that she would want to stay alive if only to continue to drive him mad with whatever her next scheme might be to keep him miserable.  Still tossing that one about in my head.

Also - huge congrats to Maggie Smith for winning the Golden Globe last night!

Poor Edith.  Even when she just tried to "settle" she fails.

Is it me or does the new footman seem like they just replaced William, who Daisy wasn't interested in, and now she is fawning over him?

Bates going Shawshank.  Who has it in for him in the prison?

Thomas...so evil.

What do y'all think of the prostitute and her "secret"? I'm guessing it's Lord Grantham's bastard son. Thus, throwing everything off. BUT, now it might not really matter since Matthew just bought half the estate...

I feel like I'm forgetting something about this from season 1 or 2. What else happened around the time she went into the servants quarters with the baby?

I'm not sure it's a "secret?" Didn't she have the baby of one of the soldiers who stayed at Downton in season 2?  The father did not want to be involved and then he died in the war anyway.  The baby's grandparents offered to take care of the child, but Ethel refused.  Seems she now regrets that decision.  Perhaps the baby will be taken in at Downton and Edith will find purpose in caring for him?

She wasn't a prostitute in season 2 - Ethel was the new lady's maid that took over for Sybil and got knocked up by one of the wounded officers who then denied the existence of his son.  The parents of the officer initially also denied the child, but then wanted to take him with no input from Ethel and she refused.  No idea what's going to happen with that story line other than maybe she wants to gain employment at Downton?

I'm enjoying the fact that O'Brien and Thomas are fighting - each trying to underhand the other.  Great fun to watch!
