Sensei ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by switch Originally posted by Kido The children that shirt is marketed to are 6-10. Their parents BUY the shirt. The shirt has words on it that convey a message. "Here, Suzie, isn't this cute. Forget about that math homework! Let's go shopping!" I guess we all have things that push our buttons. People telling girls math isn't important happens to be on my list. Originally posted by switch Originally posted by Kido I would agree that's it's pretty classless, but honestly, since when did T-Shirts become the conveyance of enlightened literature or poignant commentary? It's a T-shirt people. Go to any souvenir shop or Spencer's Gifts and see a pluthera of tasteless T-shirts. I guess I take T-shirt quotes a little tongue in cheek and wouldn't associated it with poor parenting or social degradation. I have never been a fan of the "humorous" T-shirts, however, the tuxedo T-shirt still sort of makes me chuckle.. This must be a poke the snake time for you, huh? A parent buying that shirt for their kid, or a number of other things, like the pants and shorts with words written on the butt, do, indeed, seem like bad parenting choices to me, and, yep, another type of social degradation. There are tons of good t-shirts out there...why not buy one for your kid that is just positive all the way around? I love Tony's "Nerd" shirt. My kids have "Bookworm" shirts, nature themed t-shirts, t-shirts with (gasp!) no words or logos. I really think it's OK to use critical thinking when making these choices, especially when it comes to spending money and creating an image with which your kids identify. As for humorous shirts, thinkgeek.com has some that I think are pretty funny, but I guess it all depends on your sense of humor. A t-shirt that portrays a girl as being good at spending money and not at math isn't ever going to seem funny to me. I'm not familiar with that term. I'm not trying to poke anything... I think we can all agree that since T-shirts were made, there have been plenty of tasteless, crass, rude, crude, raunchy, stupid, disgusting, and obnoxious ones printed up. So NOW is the time to get offended if a kid has one that says they are born to wear diamonds? I saw some nasty red neck chick wearing a coat embroidered on the back "if you like my mountains, you'll love my bush"... I threw up in my mouth a bit. After seeing that? The "born to wear diamonds" doesn't seem that bad.
I guess we indoctrinate them early. An infant onesie:

I suppose there are people that could take what's said on a T-shirt as a life mission statement. Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by KateTri1 Originally posted by Comet Originally posted by The kid needs to grow up like LB's kids, or how my brother and I were raised. Not wear clothes like that. That (expletive) makes me so mad! (many more cuss words had to be edited out of this post) I wanted to grow up like LB's kid, but alas.. I really sucked at sports, but not for lack of trying. I went out for track and trained harder than anyone.. but was pretty slow. I continued on my own though, running for fun and fitness. I spent my teen years playing music, taking dance lessons, and really excelled at those activities. Kids have to find their own passion. My son has no interest in "real sports". But he likes karate and science stuff. The one thing I am dedicated to that he NOT excel at, is video games. Edit: These type of t-shirts on boys really tick me off. I must be in a huge minority on this whole discussion. Sure, when I see someone wearing a shirt that's completely crass, such as the breathalyzer one, I'm inclined to think the wearer is a tool, but in most cases, I don't assume it tells me the whole story about that person. I tend to think it was just a fashion choice, or in many cases, just a joke. The shirt above is a good example of what I'm talking about. My 18 yo son has a shirt or two like this, because he's into video games, and I have no problem with that. If you saw him in a video game shirt and thought that was all he was about, you would be completely wrong. He was also a 3 sport varsity athlete with a very active social life who graduated magna cum laude with multiple advanced placement classes, and leaves to start his freshman year at Pitt in two weeks to pursue degrees in computer science and mathematics. ETA: He is also inclined to wearing MLB and NFL shirts, so someone who saw him on those days might incorrectly assume he's a meat head jock. I feel the same way about the shirt in the OP. Are kids really wearing them as a statement of what they're about, or are they actually wearing them as a joke, and us adults are taking them a lot more seriously than the kids are?

I asked him how he thought that was going to go wearing that t-shirt and he just laughed, shrugged, and said "it's just a shirt ". I bluntly told him that it projected a bad attitude, which i dont tollerate in my lab. I mean, I was thinking it, but I was pretty sure I hadn't typed it (all sarc font, of course). It was a pretty funny thread the way I remember it. It had something to do with how kids address adults, or maybe it just turned into that. The general premiss was that people had a right to be addressed how they wished by kids and parents should have no say in it....or something. I think it was Kate's fault.
