I have the original PDF e-book (before the printed one) - I'd love to start too! Maybe we can hold hands & do it together!

I have the original e-book too!  But unfortunately, I never completed the detox.  I did successfully cut out all sugar and carbs on Atkins back in 2008 and easily lost 20 pounds.  But then when I started long-distance endurance training, I started gaining it back and can't seem to get it under control.  Excessive cardio = excessive appetite.  It also means fueling with high sugar/carb sports nutrition.  But now that I am cutting back on distance, I hope to eliminate the need for sports nutrition.

Beth -  I sent the e-book and the 21-Day Sugar Detox page through facebook.

Cathy - I believe in consistent strength training at least twice a week with particular attention to core.  I prefer doing Body Pump at the health club because it is fun to have an instructor and do with a group.  Otherwise I do the Kathy Smith strength training DVD at home with dumbbells.  I hope to get more consistent this year!

I got your e-book!  I'm not sure about the level I want to do.  I think I can get by with the level 1 detox but the level 3  workout plan.  Is it appropriate to do that?

of course, that's not nearly enough calories for a 160-pound woman over 7 hours....

as for canned refried beans - if they are good ones they are cooked in lard.  technically very clean, but not necessarily very healthy.  its pretty easy to do refried beans - take a can of pinto beans, drain off the liquid, heat them on the stovetop, add different spices (garlic, chili pepper, cumin, try things out) and mash with a fork.  voila!

Tim & Marilyn - Thanks for the comments on refried beans. I can get locally made wraps from a Mexican expat and they are really good and fresh. Plus high in fibre. I'll have to try making some homemade refried beans at least once.

Tim - I'll try the black beans and see how they turn out.

Marilyn - It seems as though I am eating bread constantly but it is mainly at lunches and evening snacks. I used to take left overs for lunches when I was working but now we save them for dinners (and always make enough to have at least two meals).

I actually had held off trying to get ideas for snacking until after I had seen any comments on the beans and bread. As a diabetic I am supposed to have a good snack every evening. Preferably something slow to digest, low glycemic but it isn't easy coming up with a good variety of ideas (maybe just too set in my ways).

George - Ideally, I do not eat bread but may appease myself with something called a one-minute muffin made out of Flax Meal.  I'm with Marilyn above on the leftovers for lunch.  Or I prepare and package things in "grab and go" containers on Sunday to last the whole week.

I'm definitely a label reader, and refried beans are one thing you can buy relatively healthy (many other beans have corn syrup in them, so beware!).  I no longer eat beans, but I do have a wonderful re-fried bean recipe that I use on Super Bowl Sunday.  It is a bit time-consuming to cook dried beans, but oh so good!

Beth - I'm just going to incorporate my own normal workout routine along with doing the detox.  But if you feel you are not getting enough energy source from your food when working out, you can look at the page that has modifications for athletes and allows extra dense carb sources.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone!

Happy New Years -everyone. I've spent the afternoon trying to catch up on posts.

I'm definitely in the sick of eating crap food! Yesterday was my husband's birthday and we've basically been celebrating with friends since Saturday - WAY too much alcohol, cheese, steaks and I never want to see another cake/cupcake.

Luckily my hubby is leaving on a business trip for 8 days starting Friday - great time to rid the house of junk and really just eat clean for a week to get back on track. No alcohol til Jan. 27 (our anniversary) and replacing all the candy/cookies/chips with veggies - or better yet just less snacking all around.

Trying to find the right training plan for myself for this coming year. Not having a plan in the calendar just leads to frustration for me. Not planning on anything beyond Oly - want to really focus on strength training, running and biking. I was just diagnosed with rotator cup tendonitis but I've been OK to swim but no speed work till I get some work done by the physical therapist. My swim has never been an issue so I'm Ok with a lighter swim load.

Have a safe and happy new year!!
maggie

Happy New Years Eve! We're having an exciting night at home watching football.

George- how much bread are you eating on a daily basis? Why do you think this is more than you should be eating?

I switched over to bread thins for sandwiches for lunch. One way I guess if you wanted to limit breads but still wanted the carbs would be to replace it with something else like sweet potato's, oatmeal, quinoa, or other grains.

We don't really eat refried beans. When I do they're normally at a Mexican restaurant (lard) and diet quality isn't on my mind at that point. We tend to eat more black beans and chick peas.

snacks/sandwiches are hard.  i think that is where i struggle with staying "clean" the most.  i eat a lot of fruit - but that's no good for low glycemic!  i eat eggs a lot....even as a snack.  sometimes with salsa or avocado.  beans are a good option too.  half a sweet potato?  my sister was just telling me how her daughter hates bread and she just rolls slices of turkey and cheese up to pack in her lunches -- sounds like a simple snack too!

so - to try and enforce my 80/20 rule i'm going to score myself from 1 to 10 on the clean-ness of my diet each day, rather than the monotony of logging which i don't really like.  today i'm not even at a 5 out of 10 so far, but mostly because i've been sick the past few days and gatorade and campbell's soup are DEFINITELY not clean.  haha.  feeling better though, so hopefully more color/fiber in my diet later today...

maybe i will do weekly and monthly averages.  i like being able to put numbers to things.  i'm an engineer and i love charts too.  oh the options!

Happy New Year, folks!

If you haven't told us yet...1) have you started clean eating already? if not, when's your start date? AND 2) what was your success (or successes) for the holiday season?

I'm guessing for most of us the "clean eating" is probably going to start tomorrow or next week. I'm shooting for tomorrow - today is snacks and beer on the couch watching college football. (Go Hawkeyes!)

However, I started the day running a 5K PR!!! Yeah me! That's my success for the holiday season - I'll take it. Here's to many more successes over the next few weeks/months.

this is AWESOME!  i'm still not off the couch for the day yet.  but i am starting to do the clean thing.  i have no successes to speak of over the holiday season.  missed 2 workouts over the weekend for no good reason then got sick this week, so haven't been doing much of working out or clean eating.  blech.  i blame my brother's 4 kiddos for this!

I started today with clean Paleo/Primal.  It is my first day back at work after being off nearly 2 weeks. I did fairly good over the holidays with the exception of alcohol (WAY too much of that!).  I've weighed in and have over 10 lbs to lose (hopefully before my race season kicks in).  So far I am planning:  5K, Spartan, Raleigh Rock "N" Roll Marathon, Carolina Beach Double Sprint, and Raleigh 70.3.  I'm sure I'll add to that and may even do Beach-2-Battle Half to end the season.

No successes worth mentioning, but no epic fails either.

Kristen - Contrats on the PR!  Woot woot!!!

the carolina beach double sprint sounds AWESOME!  it's only about a 4 hour drive for me.  if only it were a different weekend, i think we are heading on vacation around then!  i can't wait to hear about this race.

I need to look at races for the year. My big goal for the year is to run a half marathon under two hours. My PR is 2:04, from 2007. That was also my first year of triathlon and I bought mmy bike the end of feb and rode it lots which I think helped my run. So my plan for the first half of the year will include lots of running and trainer rides. My other goals for 2014 are to work up to doing real pushups and pullups. What are everyones goals for the year/this month

I'm gradually cleaning up my food choices. It's snowing here for the next 2 days, so I'll be working from home. This is good and bad. Good because I can do some cooking at lunchtime. Bad because we still have gingerbread and a few brownies lurking in the kitchen.

So far today I had scrambled eggs with salsa over a bunch of spinach. Yum and "clean" (by my definition). Plan for lunch is green beans and chicken sausage. Dinner???

I'm not really sure of my goals for the year. For this month I want to get back to 2 run/walk, 2 trainer rides, 2 swims per week with strength training, as well.

So far, I did a bit of body weight exercise yesterday. Today I'll either walk/run or hit the trainer for about 30 minutes. I also want to start using my stretch cordz today.

1) No, but the wife and I will both be officially starting on Mon the 6th. We still have a few events going on this weekend and are eating the last bit of leftovers. Then Sun is our grocery day and will restock with the healthier items.

2) I don't know if it is a success or not, but I did not gain weight over the last 3 weeks or so. I can't say that about the year prior to that, but small victories for right now. Also started back running and biking, which I hadn't done either since Sept.

1. Started today. Yesterday was my birthday so was not going to happen.

2. No successes to claim. I went all in and was traveling. I weighed in yesterday and was up 8 lbs from Monday before Christmas. My body will let that go by the end of the week as long as I clean up and leave the sweets and alcohol alone.

SUBSTITUTES FOR BREAD
1. I use the large leaf of some kind of green (collards, kale, chard) and make a burrito wrap. It is actually quite good around a burger.

2. You can mash a sweet potato or regular potato and form into disks/balls around whatever protein you are eating. Kind of portable Shepard's pie.

3. You can make "tortilla" with all kinds of fake outs like coconut flour/almond flour etc. If you want some recipes, let me know and I will post the links

For January
1. I will not weigh myself for month

3. Run 40 miles in the month, go out 3x a week.

4. Swim 8 miles in the month, 2x a week or more

5. Ride 160 miles in the month, 3x a week.

I was thinking of you in the grocery store last night.  I picked up Tofouyan brand whole wheat pita bread - the ingredient list is pretty short and darn close to clean.  For breakfast today I had 2 scrambled eggs in just one half pita with some salsa, and it was plenty of that bread feel/taste but none of the bulk.  I know they are pretty easy to make and might try that in the future, but for now I'm liking this option.  Going to make some sweet potato and bean burgers and serve them on the pita too!
