TexasMPGal - 2009-11-07 4:39 PM After lots and lots of miles on nasty Texas chip seal, the concept of flat AND smooth road sounds PHENOMENAL!

Not to mention the insane amount of hours on the trainer you did today!

Happy to report a good last moderate brick today.. Weather was perfect for a 50 mile ride/12 mile run.. Beside the loooong T1, I did a total of 63 miles in 5:57..  Soooooo, take away some of the T1 time, I'd say about 5:50 easy.. Stayed on target for 15 MPH pace on the bike and added 7 & 1 walk breaks on the run is working well..  Thanks so much for the reports on the bike course guys...   And I know ALL about a sore butt from the trainer, when I had to do just a 2 hr ride early on in training...  Had Big Bertha cycling shorts and a dish towel.. Didn't help...

Woohoo....no more long stuff til IMAZ Day!  I did my last long run yesterday!  I did the B2B Iron Distance Triathlon here in Wilmington, NC as part of a relay team!  The race was awesome...we had perfect weather and lots of supporters in downtown Wilmington cheering us on!  I had a great run...felt strong and today I am sore...but not too bad!

Watching everyone out there doing the full race got me excited for AZ!  Two weeks to go!

LOl, I checked for bib numbers last night.  Random aches and pains will pop up over the next 2 weeks, just to mess with your mind

Happy to report that the lake temp is good... I think the announcer said something like 67, but felt warmer (it was a little cold at first).  Pretty happy with my effort and results on the 2.4 mile OWS today.

I'll be using a normal road helmet, as last year I rode one lap on the Friday before and the sweat was pouring out of me, it did not help that my Bell Meteor is also black in colour

You got that right... Did Vineman 70.3 twice, both times on a different road bike, had to walk Chalk Hill both times, but still came in under 4 hrs.... Glad to hear about the water temp.. Will be using a full wetsuit and should be good..   I tested it in a local harbor where the water was cold on my feet but rest of my body felt fine...

God, are we really only 14 days away?  It feels like only a week ago it was February.. Hang in there everyone...  Taper for me just around the corner...

I also swam a 4000 meter swim in the Lake today and the water was a very nice and comfortable 67 degrees. Temps for next week should be still low 80's, high 70's, so not too much cooling yet.

The hills on VM full bike weren't so bad, turned a 5:43 bike split, but the hills on the run killed me (different course than the 70.3)  Lot of walking on the 'run', I came in witha 4:40 run split.  Ugggggggghhhhhhh.

Still met my dream goal of under 12:00, with a time of 11:59:40.  20 second safety margin

I hope to hit 11;30 at IMAZ, we will see.

And yes, in exactly two weeks, you will be somewhere on either the bike course or the run course.  Hopefully the run course.

Oh, that is great news. I already have my neoprene hoody but I was worried about my toes. I'm such a wimp!

x2, but only my toes got a little cooled today. BUT, the race started at 11:30, not 7:00, big difference. IMAZ is going to feel cold, Sally, we need to just be ready for that and get warm early on the bike. I think toe warmers on the shoes and arm warmers for sure if it below 60 at the start.

So true, I got holes in a pair of arm warmers when I crashed earlier this year but I held onto them specifically to use and toss at IMAZ. Good thinking about the toe warmers!

I ran 1 loop of the marathon course today plus a little extra. Thought I might have recognized 1 or 2 of you out there but wasn't sure enough to say anything... Anyway I'm glad I did - I really wanted to refresh my memory of what it was like. 2 weeks - can't wait for race day!!!

Okay folks, I'd love to catch up on the old threads, but life is consuming me...I do have some IMAZ questions that I hadn't thought of since this wasn't the original plan (but thrilled with it now, trust me!):
- For those of you that have done this before in more humid environments, what difference does the dryness of AZ have on you? What should I think about here?
- The transition area at IMAZ, is it just the one tent for guys/one tent for gals, and you come in from the swim, have the wetsuit stripped, grab a bag, go to tent, and then someone gives you bike (or do you get your own?) and then for T2, hand bike off, grab bag, go in tent, then go on the run?  There isn't a "room" concept like IMWI, right?
- Does the bike course feel crowded due to the three loops?
- How accessible is parking? How early do y'all suggest getting there on race morning?
- Any tips on what to sight off of during the swim or is it fairly easy to sight on the buoys?
- What other good IMAZ tips have I missed??

Obviously I should be sleeping right now--but I can't--too much going on here, Ironman will actually feel like a vacation I think...

im glad you are asking those questions TexasMPgal! hopefully the locals will chime in. the suggestions thus far have been awesome....

i need to know:I have to drop my bike off this week at the stone mtn (GA) bike shop for IMAZ travel. I also paid for the sack of stuff to be transported. What does everyone puts in the sack?

i think there seems to be no consensus about where to swim from. lot of folks like the far right, but i want clearer water so id go against the trend and go central. however, even there, seems to be some chatter that that is the place to be. so thats another question.

If you are using TriBike Transport, when I have used them I packed a ton of stuff in my gear bag including my wetsuit and all my other gear for S/B/R, even my racing running shoes. I'm already paying for it and if I didn't need it before the race, it went into my gear bag.

- For those of you that have done this before in more humid environments, what difference does the dryness of AZ have on you? What should I think about here?

Not a local, but trained in more humid so cal environs. Big difference is you won't feel the sweat. You will be sweating, it will just dry right off you. For me, that meant primarily that my shoes didn't get soaked on teh run like they do at home Otherwise, it's just a matter of staying on top of your hydration. A secret bryancd tip is chewing gum on the bike.

IMAZX, exit the water, run left, outside wetsuit strippers. Run through T1 bag area (outside, laid on grass), grab bag, enter tent, do your thang. One male tent, one female tent. Run out, I had to go to my rack to get my bike. Bike, in, hand off bike, run through T2 bag area (same setup on the grass), enter tent, etc.

- Does the bike course feel crowded due to the three loops?

At the beginning, no, as I had a decent swim, coming back on teh Beeline it looked pretty crowded going up. Eventually, yes, it does start to feel crowded, but mostly on the Beeline, as I recall, and there are times you have to concentrate so as to avoid draft zones. Very easy not to draft though. It's not Clearwater crowded.

- How accessible is parking? How early do y'all suggest getting there on race morning?

US Airways Building right next to the finish is great, seems like plenty of parking. Less than 5 minutes from driving in to parking. Can't remember what time we got there......

- Any tips on what to sight off of during the swim or is it fairly easy to sight on the buoys?

The far bridge, if you can see it. If not, there are some radio towers sticking up. Otherwise, just follow the crowd. Hard to get lost Sun will come over the horizon about 7:30 or a touch before (if last year is a guide), so you will start to have the sun in your eyes going east as you get closer to the turnaround.
