Hey guys,

Do you think a 20min FTP test 3 days before an Oly is a bad idea assuming the Oly is somewhere between an A and B race ?

Well my approach is there is no B race, but that just me.

Even still if it’s a race you’re not really worried about why put it all out then put it all out again 3 days later?  Is this FTP test something that can wait until later?

So I would not do it.

Cleaning up and putting tri stuff away for the year (no more races this year for me as I need a run break).

Carefully cleaning my wetsuit and then will store.

Switching over the crank on my bikes and will put the tri bike in the basement.

Also cleaning up one of my old bikes as well as she has a new home later today.

Lastly, I am debating getting a Specialized Shiv for my next bike, any thoughts?
It would be the S-works model and would only buy the frame and aerobars I think.

My New Cannondale frame would be Ebayed and I would be working on position and biking for next year to try and really kill a HIM bike split (with a decent run

The Shiv S works TT is not that much aero than the Slice.  Now if you were to go to the Shiv Aero with the bladder and use the bladder that would be another story.

I am all for supporting the LBS but you just got a new frame.  Ride it a few years then get the newest Specialized Aero bike with a new group like electronic shifting.

Get a new pair of aero wheels.  You have a lot of miles on those Zipp 404 correct?

Just when I think I am out, they suck me back in.... Registered for Cal. 70.3 2013.  Will be my fourth time there....   Goal is to get as close to 5:00 as I can (a very lofty goal, meaning lots of running in my future)

don't ask me, i did a 11 mile TT the day before a very difficult Half Iron.

No one ever accused me of brilliant decision making.

I agree with James. No way would I do an ftp test 3 days prior.

Maybe I missed the reason Fred - but why are you thinking of dumping the Slice and switching over to the Shiv?

Question for the group.  Looks like my PT Torque value is out, and Cycleops will no longer service it because it is a wired model.  That said, it is still under warranty (from prior warranty service), and they will replace the hub with a new G3 hub.  That's great, but I'll need to get a new CPU.  So what should I get?

An Edge 500 would be good, but I'd really like a 910 - I'm just not sure what I would have to give up by going with the 910 vs the 500.  Looking for thoughts on that.

The other question.  They'll replace with a G3 or a PRO.  If I go with the PRO I can just choose the same spoke config and my disc cover and existing rim will work - 32 spokes.  Since I use this for training and racing I wonder if I just stick with 32 spokes, or because of my weight (sub 150lbs) I move to a lower spoke count, lighter rim to go with a lighter smaller G3.  Thoughts on that too?

I believe the 910 does everything that the edge 500 does.  The advantage of the 500 is that the display configuration might be a little nicer and easier to read.

As far as the spokes, I don't see anything wrong with just going with 32 spokes for durability.  A spoke and nipple is about 7 grams each.  So even though you could get away with 24 spokes, you're only going to save 56 grams.  Your disc cover already weighs about 400 grams...so it's just a matter if those 56 grams are important to you.

. Considerably more aero. However I think the shiv looks fuggly, so I'm not sure....

Do you know (estimate) how much faster a Shiv would be over a Slice in a HIM?  I never really looked into it.

What I like about the 500 is the size of the display. You can put bigger fields or more fields per screen. I find the screen of the 910 a little small personally.

What I like about the 910 is no wires to download. It's auto download to garmin connect. The 500 is more of a manual process.

Both have barometric altimeter which used to be an advantage of the 500 over the 310.

Not sure what you have as a run watch now.

Personally the cost of the new rim and wheel cover is not worth the weight difference. It would work out to an extra $200 ?

I'd just go with the Pro and keep your current setup.  If you were starting from scratch, sure go with the G3.

As for the computer, I have a 500 and think it's great but I have no experience with a 910.  Do you want one to use it for all 3 sports and to have a single computer during races?  Personally I like having different ones for races as I don't like having a watch on my wrist while cycling and having to swap back and forth between having it mounted on the bike and my wrist would be annoying.  I like that I can just leave my 500 on the bike and put my watch on as I'm headed out on the run.

I've also seen lots of complaints about the run pace on the 910, maybe that's been fixed though.

Fred, since you had both I don't suppose you compared the elevation profile between the 800 and 910 did you?  We had very different numbers between your 800 and my 500.

. Didn't actually start the 910 until the run as far as recording data. I did use it to see my HR on the bike but no elevation data. What did you get from the 500 on the bike?

I got 6800 feet to your 5500.

Edit to add that the 6800 seems high compared to what others are saying on ST.
