Manatees, I'm having a motivation problem.  My coach gives me 2 strength workouts a week that are about 30-40 min. each.  I find myself dreading them and look for any possible excuse to skip.  I know that they'll help me in the long run but that isn't enough to push me to do the work.  Any suggestions for how I can motivate myself to do these regularly like I'm supposed to?  I've asked my coach, but figured I'd ask y'all too.

What don't you like about it?  Do you not like going to the gym to do it?  Do you not like doing it when Alex is around?

I don't like how weak I feel when I can't do the exercises as well as I think I should.  I do them at home and Alex usually isn't around; if he is, he'll go in the other room.  Haven't tried cranking up some music.  That might help me get through it.  It's the starting that's the problem.

I guess what I'm really asking is more how any of you motivate yourselves to do a workout you don't want to do, regardless of what it is.  Maybe I just need to remind myself that my coach is giving them to me for a reason, in particular to address a weakness I specifically said I knew needed to be addressed (core strengthening to help my back, hip strengthening for my weak L hip), so I just need to HTFU, do the dang workouts and stop whining.

Kirsten, you suggested the rewards thing.  That's a good idea.  It sure worked for me when I was getting started so maybe I'll try that again.

In addition to what others have said, I know that when my motivation is lacking I try to remember that i have never regretted doing a work out, but always regret when i miss one.  I also try to remember how good i feel after the work out and how much closer it gets me to where i want to be.

If you don't enjoy it and dread it you'll never have the motivation to do it. SOOOOOOO you probably do need to do strength work but you got to find something you like. Something like a Pump class or similar. I hate the gym, I hate pump but i drank the Kool Aid and went to Crossfit, and I'm loving it and feel good for doing it, and my swim strength is much improved.

Heh, time to trot out this oldie but goodie (why not?)

Motivation: 9 Tips to Get Going in Winter or Whenever

You've gotten great advice (as usual). Find a way to enjoy it. You can also bribe yourself with rewards although ultimately for it to be sustainable it needs to become its own reward.

I don't remember one training session of anything or even one race this last year that I had the motivation to do or wanted to do. Ask Stace Face, I DID NOT want to do Ironman WA that morning, would have been perfectly happy to miss my own bloody (and it was bloody!) wedding

I probably seem to be brimming with over-enthusiasm. I actually do, but I work hard at it. I really focus on the SPIRIT of the thing (whatever thing it is) and the fact that I wind up LOVING the experience and especially the result.

I can't wait for, or work up, motivation. It's never going to come. I just have to stick my foot out there and do whatever it is that needs doing. Act first, then the feelings do come later. I can't make it work for myself the other way around.

Thanks, everybody.  You guys rock.  Yanti, what you said so perfectly fits. Chris, what you said reminded me that I started out back in January by doing core strength exercises when I couldn't do anything else.  Even though I didn't like doing them, that's got me to where I am today.  If I spent half as much energy actually doing the strength training as I did avoiding it, I'd be knocking out those workouts in no time. Starting next week (after my rest week - see below), those strength workouts are going to be my #1 priority with the goal of being able to do everything else instead of just doing what's fun.  Discipline, it's all about discipline.

Had a good talk (via email) with Coach Tess yesterday after hitting a real rough patch yesterday.  I'm going to take a whole week off to let my hip fully settle down, get my shoulder/neck whacked back into shape by the chiro, and make a dr. appt. to get a PT referral for my knee.  Also, no more crossfit.  It's not worth the toll it takes on my body.  We're also going to scale back my workouts from 6 days a week to 4-5.  She said we might have to rethink me doing the HM, which really irks me, but if that's what has to happen so I can be healthy in the long run, well, so be it.

I guess my motivator for things I don't want to do but know I should is the reward.  Or sometimes the lack of (self-imposed) penalty.   There are days when I absolutely don't want to get up and go swimming.  But I know if I don't, I will be mad at myself later.  Or sometimes I feel too tired to run, but I know if I do I will feel energized.

And you might feel weak right now, but that is because the area IS weak.  That's kinda the point, no?     Can you congratulate yourself for doing the exercises, in spite of the fact that you don't feel like you are doing them well enough?  Or, do the workout, then come and tell us about them and have us congratulate you

I have to put it on my calendar.  I'm pretty good at attending meetings with myself ;-)

What I was getting at when I asked what you don't like about it is that there are many ways to skin a cat.  Do you not like free weights?  Do you not like machines?  Do you not like yoga?  I used to go to Gold's Gym and they had a setup with 8-10 machines numbered and I could just bang that out before or after my spin class. That was easy for this non weights person so that worked well for me.  Right now, I'm enjoying TRX (still figuring it out though).  I think that we (Manatees, Tess, etc.) just need to help you come up with something that you like (tolerate) a bit more.

For me it would go back to understanding what I'm doing these things for, especially since they're not the activities I had wanted to be doing. Knowing how each one is supposed to develop and help out the primary activity. Not just the vague "stronger" or whatever the current buzzword may be, but specifically how they should be helping out. And from this would come Janine's suggestion of various types of non-sbr work. My preference is to not use isolating machines except at rehabbing levels, but many other things mentioned have exercises in them that could be of benefit if you know what areas need the work. The exact discipline chosen doesn't matter so long as the work gets done to fix the areas that need it.

I don't actually do any strength or correction work now, so the closest is taking a longer and more dynamic warm-up for running. Some of these things were frustrating and/or annoying to do at first, but over time I could see how the runs were going better as I was more ready to go from the first step. The runs themselves were more enjoyable. The other dynamic work then became more tolerable and then more enjoyable as I knew it would lead to better things later. I also did become better at them which helped too.

WOOT WOOT!  Happy birthday!  It'll be good to see you around more - and maybe even doing a tri!  Does that mean that you'll stalk yourself?

Mine's tomorrow, but I don't age up.

Hope you enjoyed the cake!

(my sis in Boston sent us a half dozen lobsters for a b-day/christmas gift.  Although I love Tejas, the touch of "home" was a much welcomed reminiscence - followed by a "Nothing Bundt Cakes" local dessert!  Aahhh, good times)

Knee angle and use of illegal fairings seems a bit dodgy but the nutrition setup is spot-on.

The bike is fine. The real problem I see is you have no helmet.  Aero helmet is better, but you can NOT be at an event and roll up like that. You will be DQ'd, because helmets are in the rules. Otherwise, you look good to go.

You sure she doesn't have one of these things on?

I guess the fit is ok. Always thought the three wheeled version suit her better though.

I like the pink rims.  Those'll definitely help with speed, although the tires might be a little wide.  This one might be faster; there's more room for leg extension so you can get more power.  Plus it folds up so you can carry it in a backpack and ride it back down the mountains you run up.

so birthday week going well. Monday my actual birthday involved Crossfit. Tuesday was a lunchtime run but it was 82 degrees and z2 was a walk more than a run but got 30mins before i was toasted.

Today is OWS day and of course the weather changed and is chilly. No doubt it will be choppy too.

Last week was my first OWS of the season and very noticeable that I've been out of the pool too long. I was abysmal. Try harder tonight. like starting over!

Rest of the week involves another two runs another two Crossfit.

The foot is fine. It was just a weird feeling like it wanted to pop. Didn't notice it after I walked home from the park. Contemplating wearing my old PC2's for my 2k tonight. Just wondering if all this mess is coming from the 3's. They're different than the 2's, but not THAT much different.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
