Speaking of swimming, I really dogged it over the winter and am trying to now play catchup.  Anybody got thoughts on how much fitness/speed I can pick up in 4 weeks swimming 4-5 times, anywhere from 1700-2500yds per session?

Neil,

Work off of your t pace (Threshold Pace).  Do blocked sets of 100’s and 200’s.  Like

300 fr WU
4X50 fr on1:00or MOD pace
Main set
3x (3x100 at t pace) 200 fr recovery in between)
200 ez
3x 200 mod or something similarly
200 CD

So intervals basically x1 1st week, x2 2nd and 3rd week and  4th week early in the week x1.  Swimming 3 to 4 a week.  jmho

Fred D - 2012-05-03 12:02 PM So, weight loss threads are all the rage in try talk I see. I suspect many of us struggle with weight, but I think it is such an emotional topic that we need to be careful. See my post in tri talk (and no you don't have to agree with me)

I agree with you Fred.

I understand what Tom was trying to get across...but he just totally whiffed.  Losing weight is in fact an issue that we all need to deal with, but posting a picture of pros and saying that's what we need to look like was a horrible way of portraying that message.  I'm secure with my weight, so his comments did not bother me, but I can imagine how it would bother others who struggle with weight and their self esteem based on it.

We do need to be careful about the subject, and thanks for the reminder.

wow, I think I might have found a pool (30x60 at that).  I was so excited I forgot to ask if it was year round.  Doh!  I'm going to have to check this place out for sure.  It is on the other side of town, but this is Payson and I am learning that the other side of town is really no big deal.

Wouldn't have even thought to look in that one. That was an off the wall and irrelevant answer to the OP's question.

Fred D - 2012-05-03 6:24 PM Lots. Neil, *I* think your biggest limiter has always been swim fitness. It has an impact on your bike and run which are much stronger than you think, but get hurt by swimming (lack) of training and fitness.

I agree with you completely, and should have been focusing on the swim this winter...but didn't.  I know I need to fix it and am now trying to do that.  4th swim of the planned for tomorrow.

Thanks James - I'm using the swim workouts in a binder at the moment.  When you refer to T pace, is that the same as my 1000TT pace?  Typically how much slower is MOD that T pace?

So for the swim set you've got listed, I add that up to 3000 yds, would that be right?  I'm also a bit lost on the bolded part, can you explain this?

Thanks

Hey guys. No training tonight. Long day at the hospital. Also found out one of the other students is dropping out of the rotation and will have to join the year behind me...think the other student and I are going to have to pick up her call. Sigh. Time for training is not getting easier! Going to get a short run in tomorrow before work starts.

Neil,

Yes 1000TT is the most common.  I do mine differently and still is the same at 1000TT t pace.  Which is 3x100’s at full sprint and right now it’s at1:05per 100.  I don’t do many swim workouts where I come out spent.  So I could get faster but I swim a1:02-1:05IM swim and come out not spent.  So bottom line for me it all a ROI kind of thing.  I love swimming and would swim more if I had the time.  You need to work on the swim for better bike and run.

MOD pace is less than the T pace RPE wise.

You said you wanted
fitness/speed I can pick up in 4 weeks swimming

This was the bold:

1st week do a T pace work out x1 then x3 mod workout for the week
2nd and 3rd week do a T pace work out x2 then x2 mod workout for the week
4th week do a T pace work out x1 then x3 mod workout for the week

Each of the t pace work outs you should be spent make sure the Lifeguard is watching

If you don’t what 3000 yards meters then do less but not the main set.

Neil,

btw I hope somebody else posts something different so you can see a different perspective.  Over the years in this sport things change and everybody does training differently.  It’s really not rocket science but what works for me may not work for others.  The one thing I can tell you getting outside of your comfort zone is a key.

Thanks for all of that James - comfort zone is definitely where I am usually in the pool.  For the most part I swim a lot at T pace, which I think indicates I take too long between sets (been told that before) - I'm usually about :15-:20/100's or :20-:25/200's, or my T pace is off a bit.

The part I really struggle with is that when I push harder on the swim I get really exhausted - and see very minimal speed gains.  i.e. T pace for me is around 1:40/100yds, but swimming a 1:35, even for a 100 takes an awful lot more effort.  I'm just constantly surprised how much extra effort it takes to go just a tiny bit faster, plus I think my form starts to fall apart as I push harder.

I agree that getting out of your comfort zone is key.  The main set should be uncomfortable.  When I made the most gains in my swimming the workouts were hard.  The main sets were usually 50-300 yd intervals all at t-pace or faster.  Eventually, with frequency and consistency, you just get faster.

Tom and Neil:  Maybe try structuring your sets on a set interval (SI).  So if you were doing that 3x100 at t-pace, your t-pace is 1:35, plan on leaving the wall at 1:50 or 1:55 set intervals as opposed to giving yourself a rest interval of :20.  The rest interval gives you no motivation to go faster.  The set interval has you leaving at a set time.  Go faster and you get longer rest..go slower and too bad you are leaving at 1:50 LOL.

I did James' workout on lunch as well - limited to 35min, so 1900yds total for me.

200WU, 2x50FR,3x(3x100FR,200FR),100Mix

Surprised myself a bit.  First 100 was at a 1:37 pace, and held that for the first 6, and then in the last set of 3 actually dropped the pace down to 1:34.  The 200's I swam at a 1:42/43 pace - not sure if that is too slow or just about right.  Gave myself :15 in between the 100's and :20 after the 200's.

I'll try this one again next week in a 25M pool, and will also try to swim in the morning (which I haven't done for 4 years) to give myself enough time to actually increase the yardage.  Can't go any longer on my lunch hours.
