Bit of a problem at the airport in Bali today? Eek! Thank goodness no one was killed! I'm in Jakarta. A few of you have asked if I'm here permanently ... hm, well Dub6 said it the best, it's the new normal for now. So I'm here most of the time, with fortnightly-ish reprieves from my sister so I can go back to Bali for a few days and mess up the Funny Farm for the Hobbit Maid to put it back in order when I go again. Unfortunately in the middle of all this my poor brother had to have an emergency appendectomy in Dubai on his way back here from the U.S. (he was meant to be gone a week) but the illness and having to wait for flight clearance delayed him another 2 weeks. Very relieved he's well and received excellent med care in the UAE, but it also put the entire weight of dealing with things here on me, including my father's official memorial on 4/25. We'll see how Mutti does, but also, how we're going to reorganize the house staff. By we, I suppose I mean I. Sigh. Last night I was ready to remind them all of the very lenient penalties in this country for murder, and prison time often entirely mitigated with blood payments. To get me to this point, there has to be repeated incidents in which Mutti's health, safety, or well-being was put at significant risk. Now, a bit more on topic, yes, very glad no one was seriously hurt in the airline incident. Let's just say that budget airlines here give a whole new meaning to the word "cheap" and "no-frills." That particular airline has had 6 crashes in 10 years (one resulting in 25 deaths) and innumerable other safety incidents. That is a VERY high rate. Air traffic industry training, certification, ongoing safety QC, technology, and infrastructure leave a LOT to be desired in this country. That said, I'm thrilled because at least for the next week, everyone will be on their toes and Lion Air has slashed its prices dramatically. My sister's flying in to Jakarta and out, and I'm taking a few days to go back to Bali while she's here, so this is excellent. What??? or did I read that wrong? Nope. You read that correctly. I don't whine much in here and haven't had time to whine much in my blog either, and while Mutti is the part I'm most concerned about, I'm dealing with TEN PEOPLE who apparently between them can't manage to take care of one little old lady who's pretty high-functioning. The rest of their jobs aren't being done at all or that well, either. The situation in our family company is significantly worse, but since it only indirectly affects my mother's well-being (putting at risk her financial security, which actually is fine because my dad left a sizable inheritance that due to bureaucracy I'm never expecting to see ... okay, well, months to years) I'm less murderous about it. But trying to untangle the company situation--in which we have a few hundred employees and a lot of cabals have formed that stole from my dad and from the company for years, and all accused each other of doing it, and filed questionable tax reports in order to have blackmail fodder (and this is just the tip of the iceberg) ... is a lot more complex. At the house, I just need to fire some people and put the fear of Yanti in the others. The company stuff involves a lot of extremely sticky financial, tax, employment, and legal issues. It's a lot. It's just a lot. Emotionally I'm completely caring for my mother, and wind up doing a lot of direct care as well; I'm grieving myself; on the tail end of healing from injury but it's not 100%; and I've built back up to full-on iron training. That part I like and love and is a salvation ... it's just that everything is a lot. I do try to remember how very much I have to be grateful for. That, too, is a salvation. Wow I think "iron training" takes on a whole new dimension when you talk about everything going on in your life. All the business/legal/money issues are cringe-worthy just by themselves, but then to add concern for mama's well-being...YOU GO GET 'EM! Very glad to hear you're taking a short break because the cliche is true...Can't take care of anyone else if you don't take care of yourself. <hugs> |

I had to make up for the fact that I have been drinking spoiled milk all week. Didn't even notice. My sister came over and put some in her coffee and spit it out immediately. Oops. My brother asked if I might pull a Paula Radcliffe on course. Only time will tell I'm just about to jump on the shuttle up to Hopkington. It's probably gonna take 1.5 hours. bcraht - 2013-04-14 10:47 PMHaving a pre-race beer for Salty . Inversion IPA. Yummy. I had one ( or two) for her too. Supporting people can be a hard job |

I don't even know where to start, really, except I know Yanti needs some big, long, strong, nurturing hugs. {{{hugs, hugs, hugs}}} Give Mutti some of those hugs, too. She is such a peach. And many congrats are to be said for racing efforts (TJ, Darren, Jen, Ann-Marie) as well as training gains (talkin' to you and your bike, Jo!). Thanks for making me hungry for Mexican food and queso, Jen and Skrat. And we have our speedy Salty to track, yay!! No 5K time for her yet. Edited by melbo55 2013-04-15 9:38 AM |
