Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) That was a justified rant. A day great and terrible here today. First thing this morning was the great part. My oldest was in a concert at the New England Conservatory and was astounding. Truly. Then I got home and snacked quickly then hopped on the drainer for my 2-3 hour ride. Stopped at an hour. Empty light came on… I almost never cut a workout short, but sometimes you have to (I just didn't want to today!). Worst part is that all this working out is getting in my head - so much time and so many other things to do (or not do). That ever get to anyone else? It's like I'm cramming other fun stuff in around a packed workout schedule for a race that's still 4.5 months away. Feels unbalanced at times... OK, soft rant over. Back to smiling and off to the pool in a bit. Matt |

46 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement for the poor start to my day yesterday. Turns out, they lifted the travel warning later that morning, so we were able to go about our everyday business. So it wasn't so bad after all. And great suggestion about trying to do strength training at home. I had never even thought of that! I don't have weights, but I do have water jugs and such Mark - that sounds awful and I am sorry you had to go through that. Off to the gym for real this time here shortly to play a little bit of catch up. Brick workout today with a little bit of strength training. Looking forward to it! Hope everyone has a good end to their week. Ashley |

I'm here! sorry Manatees I fell off the edge of the world for a while but here I am. it's nearly 5 months since I broke my wrist and yesterday I finally did my first meaningful swim - an OWS race. Slower than last year but got that 1.6km done. My wrist ached after and during but all good. It is great to be back. I'm about to head out for a run with the dog. For those who don't know me. Jojo Baxas 49 married with one daughter who is 8. one dog Scooby Triathlon - not so much at the moment. Have done two OD one HIM and countless sprints. BUT I hate riding - loathe it. Last year was training for a HIM and a subsequent IM when I did a stationary clipped in topple in my driveway and busted my wrist pretty badly, thus followed surgery. This year is all about running - marathon in August, and swimming. Plans right now Swim camp on 21-23 Feb with BRENTON FORD from EFFORTLESS SWIMMING - Judi don't hate me too much.... I am renowned for pro triathlete stalking. Spent a week in Phuket with Macca last year....there's not many I've not met! Also do a bit of work for Ben Greenfield. February 1 I'm going VEGAN for a month. WTF I'm supposed to eat who knows. so that's me! |

Each time i've trained for a HIM I reach a point where it seems everything in my life takes a back seat to training; especially the long bike days. That's one reason I haven't even looked at any HIMs this year. Not saying I'm not going to do one, I just haven't reached a point where I even want to consider it yet. I assume come May or June that will change, but if not, this will be the year of sprints and ODs and HMs. |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by Buckshot Ok, here is my thirty second rant. Yesterday was a disaster. I was out doing errands Saturday morning and apparently ran over some metal with my truck. I put a four inch gash in one of my rear tires. I pulled into a commercial driveway and walked around my truck to see a flat tire. Wow, that sucks. Well what was worse is that it was six degrees with about 15-20MPH wind and I wasn't dressed to be outside for any length of time. The locking mechanism to lower the spare from under the bed of the truck was frozen. I took forty-five minutes to get the spare down. I was on the phone with my wife talking her out of ordering a tow truck through our roadside assistance. Why might you ask? Because the wait was one hour and twenty minutes. Turns out that would have been the smart play. So, two hours later, with numb feet and hands I was on my way with my spare on and flat in the back. I have to run at least two tire with the same tread depth so today I am shopping for a) one new tire (keep the spare on and replace one of the other four), b) buy two new tires, or c) buy four new tires which will run me about $1,100. Nice. Ok, rant over. I need to move on; but i am tired of this winter, hate car repairs and maintenance and the time I'll waste shopping for a decent deal on tires. Hope everyone else had a decent day. Sounds like a miserable day - hopefully today was better! |

Glad the wrist is back, if balky. Glad you're back, too! Wish I had even a word of wisdom for the bike - it's like an immunization: sometimes it takes, sometimes not so much. The week in Phuket sounds AWESOME, as does the camp (although vegan not so much for me - no issues with, just seems so HARD. We had trouble with just ovo-lactarian for a couple years. Good on ya'!). I'm also envious of the run focus, although I'm gonna try to stick with tri until at least the fall (work, kids, and other fun stuff permitting). Looking forward to seeing how the run and swim go for you this year! Matt |

I assume come May or June that will change, but if not, this will be the year of sprints and ODs and HMs. On the kid - thanks. It's humbling that these tykes are better at… well, everything than I was or could be. I suppose that's the way of things! All 3 have more musical ability, they swim better, they're going to be taller, smarter and probably even smell better. And, like most parents (I hope), nothing could make my happier. As for training, I'm glad at least someone else feels this. I enjoy pushing and training hard - and racing well even more. But, as my wife said today, "Working out 5 hours a day isn't exactly normal." Bwahahahahaaa! 'Course, she's in the same boat. We sometimes fantasize/joke about enjoying all the other things in life and working out like normal people (only ONE hour long workout a day)... All that said, I had a swim that was as good as my bike today was bad, so I'm still plugging away towards June. My real concern lurking out there is that a new job is imminent. Could go one of two ways - really good for training and flexibility or totally consuming. We shall see, but I'll happily plug along until something changes. Thanks! Matt |

They were talking about that "polar plunge" on the radio this morning. Yuk! It amazes me that the Twin Cities are at a wind chill of -35* and I ran in shorts yesterday! Didn't run with my new friend yesterday. She wasn't feeling well. I have one more swim clinic with Coach Matthew. I am AMAZED at what he has done for my swim. I always read in TT that it's all about finding the right coach. How true that is! He also does private lessons. One 1/2 hour meeting a month for $30/month, and he's talking about doing another clinic in March. I guess I'll see how I do working on my own and maybe go from there, but I like the idea of working with him in the future. |
