I was going to do a 90km loop I've done before out into the hills and back along the coast, it's incredibly scenic and has lots of hills. I guessed it would take just over 3 hours. Anyway, the first 2 hours were great, I felt really strong and hills that I normally struggle with felt easy. As I went through a little village I stood to get up a short incline and the chain did a huge jump and I nearly came off. I stopped and had a quick look and it seemed like the chain was on the wrong cog for the position of the rear derailleur. I flicked it across and set off but from then on I just couldn't get any speed up despite pushing hard and the next few climbs seemed almost impossible. I seriously thought I might be bonking and so I ground on until I got to the next village and got a couple of iced coffees. I turned the bike upside down and found that the rear wheel skewer had come loose and the wheel wasn't in its cradle, it was also leaning at an angle jamming it against the rear brake. I couldn't even turn it by hand. Once I fixed it I set off the final 25km's home and it felt like I was on a motorbike! It took me nearly an hour longer than planned and my legs are trashed. I'm hoping the strength training benefit will be huge! I had the same malfunction with my bike the day I was supposed to drop my bike off for IM. If you don't get the skewer in straight and tight, it is common. I couldn't even turn the pedals. PS. Iced coffee to come off a bonk? really? I assume it's loaded with sugar? otherwise, not the best choice, especially since you won't be using it for your IM! Yes, lots of sugar and yummy! I would have ordered 3 but I was worried I was going to vomit! |

David: when I have pain on the top of my foot, I look to the muscles on the outside of the shin. Take a look at the Extensor Digitorum Longus description and picture in the attached link. It connects to the tendons running into the 4 smaller toes.
Hmmmnn ... could be. Much the same as my PF stems from tightness in that same calf. Seems like the previous injuries to my left ankle continue to wreak havoc on that foot. but no troubles at all on the right side. Thanks for the info. |

Member 16 Centralia | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Hey all, I think I have missed about a week here. Anywho, I hope everyone that raced this weekend did spectacular!! I loved the trail run we did last weekend. Hard but fun. Also, sending out some healing vibes to all of those that are injured now. I would agree that if you are going to a doctor about a particualr musculoskeletal issue, please see an orthopaedic. Candice and I were lucky enough to happen upon Dr. McHottie who is sports medicine ortho doc. My GP just called me an old jock and told me to suck it up. I know enough about biomechanics and sports injury to realize I needed a specialist. So sending a shout out to all of ya from Lake Havasu City, had to leave my training buddies behind this week up in Chehalis . It is sooo nice to see the sunshine for a change and, oh, my lord...I ran this morning in the sun. Sunglasses and everything!! Okay, it was a short run, mostly cause I spent more time looking at houses for sale. I promise I will do better tomorrow. If anyone has been to Lake Havasu City and knows a good run route or anything let me know. Thanks |

Once again, I stumbled on some huge wild goats on the trail. They were too quick for a photo so this will have to do! Off to a nice dinner tonight and then a big long run for me bright and early tomorrow! |

Had to post since we are too far down on the forum list. :-) I hope everyone had success this weekend whether racing or training. Beautiful pics Suzy. The kids and I were just talking about our Hawaii trip last summer over the weekend. Week 3 of my plan is in the books and I am onto a recovery week more for mental purposes than physical. My recovery week focuses on swimming so I'm sure I'll have a nice ode to pool smell by the end of the week. |

Expert 1038 Noosa | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed I'm on a recovery week too! First one of the plan so feels a bit like I'm slacking off. Had to do last weeks long run yesterday because I was working all weekend and I'm glad to say I've managed to get all my runs done so far without stirring up my various injuries. No long runs for 2 weeks now so lots of time to recover. |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed So I've heard that WTC is going to announce some sort of wave starts for some of the NA IM. One of the local pros is all a buzz about it. What do you think? As a slow swimmer you would think I would love it, but I don't. I hate the idea of hanging on the shore waiting for my wave start, being out there even longer because of all the standing around and not knowing where I am in the pecking order. Hope this rumor is just that. |

Veteran 287 Tucson | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Hello, all. Just wanted to stop in for a quick update. I have just gone through the painful process of requesting a refund for what was supposed to be my first tri. At least my name won't show up as DNS. Did that Sunday and broke down sobbing at the dinner table that night. This morning I updated my goal and signature here on BT. Life can move on now. (Good grief, I sound like a 15 year old who just got dumped by her first love! ) It's been a month since I have been able to do any serious running or cycling. Every time I try a test, I hurt for days. I finally decided that I have to not try anymore until things stop hurting or I will really mess myself up. The knee (what ever is actually wrong, am not sure) I feel will heal with rest. PT will help strengthen the area up to prevent it from happening again. I am nervous about my hips though. Impingement can be a serious issue that can't be corrected without surgery. I really hope this is not what I have going on. I have an appointment with a new PT this am who is a runner herself and works with lots of runners. I am excited about that. She works at the hospital that my DH works at. Will switch to her if things go well this morning. Also, I have a private swim lesson scheduled for Friday. I will be very swim focused for the next month or so. Hopefully, I will be ready to get back to running and cycling by the end of March. The weather should be good by then. Have a good day, everyone! |

Biked and ran this weekend - maybe a bit too much - and then had a rough recovery day yesterday. Yikes. Need to work on moderation! Feels like Spring here - gonna be 70 today, blue skies, no clouds, some wind - horrid allergies! And the news last night announced we are in a pre-drought state. And then they went on to the weather issues everywhere else! Hope all of you in snow-bound areas are tucked in tight. Next up - try to put a few more races onto my calendar to motivate me BEFORE Vineman!!!! |

Sorry to have been absent for the last week, work gets in the way sometimes! No racing for me and my two favorite gadgets are my Garmin 305 and my Swimovate swim watch (battery currently dead, gotta figure out how to replace it) Both of these help keep me honest when I am training. Not too hard, not too easy - just where I plan to be..... |

It kept me in the "game" longer than usual and I felt really proud of my accomplishment at the end of the day...the very LONG day!!! Gadgets? I love my jump rope. |

New user 9 | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed I completed my 33 mile Chilly Hilly ride this past Sunday with no problems! It was my first race, took things slow (12.5mph first half) then ramped up (14.5mph second half). Still had a lot of energy afterwards and no tight muscles or soreness except my lower back and rear end. I won't be a racing lion this month, but rather, a training beast. My training plan has me upping my weekly run volume to over 40miles per week, biking twice a week, in addition to my swimming lessons. Can't live without my Garmin 310XT! |
