Dearest Manatees,

Do I want to do a 4 mile trail (mostly packed gravel fire roads) run on June 2nd?  I'm supposed to do a long bike that day, but I could do that on Saturday (a rest day?) and run on Sunday.  My training plan is a little lighter running wise than I am currently doing.

Love,

Jen

Trail race sounds fun, but I wonder how the uneven surfaces could hamper your training for the tri....

It's at Pocahontas.  There were a few sections of uneven footing, but not too many.  They also made it flatter this year. We'll see.   Would be good practice for Tavern!

How have your hips and legs been lately? Was it you that mentioned some challenges with them recently?

They've been a little sore, but I did a 2 mile over the weekend with no issues.  I think if I keep up on stretching and yoga, I'll be ok.  I have been great since yoga class on Thursday.

Then I say DOOOO EEEETTTTTT!!!

The trail may have some challenging footing, so be aware. But it is generally a softer underfoot experience, which may be beneficial.  And I just really like trail runs, so you'll make me happy!

Do the run. Trail running is the bomb. I love it. I prefer it over running on pavement or, god forbid, the track.

I'm jonesin' for some speed work on my run. Anyone have a down and dirty speed workout to pass along?

If you have time read this thread...scroll down a bit for this lady's race report.  It's outstanding.  Race report of the month for sure.

I love the part about no sharks. Just thinking about having to deal with sharks will make me freak out in the pool!

I liked the Vegemite on the racecourse. Don't think that's an option here Smile

I went to the pool after work. It's probably been like 3 years since I did a real workout.  I am so so so slow.  At least it can only get better from here!

Off to run as soon as the hubby gets home.

All your talk of beautiful weather is making me feel even colder (I want summer back already)!!! Our night time temps are down in the 40s now, which is cold for us (we don't get snow) And it is still dark at 6:30am and the sun is going down at 5:30pm. 3 weeks ago we were still getting 100* days so I am not coping well. I have lost all of my motivation and just want to go back to bed after DH leaves for work at 5:45.

DH wont let me train outside in the dark because there are no street lights and sidewalks and very limited road shoulders where we live. i can train inside on the trainer and the treadmill but this is not exciting me and even then I am still cold after 30minutes.

Can any of you give me some good suggestions for winter gear? I have my first race in a week and a half and it will most likely be around 50* at the start, this is definitely not shorts and t-shirt weather for me. More like 2 layers of pants, 3 tops and my ugg boots (you might need to google that one) but I can't run in that

I forgot the race distance. Also, do you have an idea of the expected water temp and weather for race day?

We've hit our triple digits to stay for probably the next 4+ months. Send some 50° my way, PLEEEEEEASE!!!! This race is a run only, right? Why not Uggs??? I like my full Nike running pants...a little thicker material. And I have a long-sleeved UA shirt that I've used for early morning winter races. I don't like the constrictive feeling of layers, and I really warm up quickly. Do you take long to get warm?

reneehoyos - 2013-05-14 1:10 AM Manees! How are you all accessing folks workouts and race logs? I'm loving the inspires and would like to do some for y'all. Lemme know.Oh. Odd thing in the pool today. I could smell the guy in the next lane's cologne. Underwater. Ever had that happen? Every time he'd pass me, I'd get a whiff underwater. That is the first time I have ever smelled someone in the pool. I felt like a marine mammal!

You truly must be a manatee.

yep run only race. My uggs don't have enough grip so I can't race in them. It takes me a while to get warm and my hands and feet pretty much stay cold from now until the end of September. I have fairly poor circulation. Exercising helps a bit but not a great deal.

bcraht - 2013-05-13 12:48 PM Can y'all imagine where Salty would be if she hadda started running sooner?  My god, I WOULD have to get on my bike to keep up! Laughing

Frown This depresses me if I think about it too much. I mean, of course, I can't change the past and it's a waste of time to think of "what could have been" plus, I was probably waaaaaay too immature and unfocused even just, like, last week Wink

But yeah ... I see some of my teammates who ran in college and had that really solid 10+ year base that they can keep building on while I am working my tail off to just start a foundation.

Meeeeh, I know, poor me.

I think I must be feeling sorry for myself today. Sorry guys!

Of course we all could have would have should have.  I have a friend whose brother is now 18.  In 2011 he was 16 and about to be selected for the Aussie Olympic Swimming Team for London.  His parents sold their house and moved to be nearer the swim centre, up at 4am every day.  Then he just one day woke up and said, mum dad I dont wanna swim any more.

Burnt out at 16.

Never have regrets, learn from your mistakes for sure but just enjoy your life!  What might have been never was.

Everything you said is true though. And I should count the blessings I DO have.  Like, for instance, friends with super hawt voices.

To your point, I was doing a PowerBar event and watching all these triathlon Olympic hopeful kids. Their parents were STRUNG out, more than half the kids didn't look like they were having ANY fun. It was sad.

Yeah, I was going to say, beanie and gloves are huge. Plus you can get cheap ones and ditch them if you get too warm.

At 50 degrees I worry about you being TOO warm. But you know yourself.

Until they make running uggs you may have to hold off on those ...

I've been very clear with Artemis if she wants to do something she does it full steam.  She doesn't have any ideas about athletic goals so that's good.  I don't think I can get up earlier than 5am!

Here she is! Home safe & sound after a short maiden voyage. I'm thinking Fiona, for the character in Burn Notice. I'd trust that chica with my 6 any day, and she's hawt.

More like 2 layers of pants, 3 tops and my ugg boots (you might need to google that one) but I can't run in that

Do you take long to get warm?

yep run only race. My uggs don't have enough grip so I can't race in them. It takes me a while to get warm and my hands and feet pretty much stay cold from now until the end of September. I have fairly poor circulation. Exercising helps a bit but not a great deal.

Thought about a beanie and gloves?

Yeah, I was going to say, beanie and gloves are huge. Plus you can get cheap ones and ditch them if you get too warm.

At 50 degrees I worry about you being TOO warm. But you know yourself.

Until they make running uggs you may have to hold off on those ...

Those two things can do a lot more than people think. Cheapie gloves should be fine if you need to toss them. I seem to be missing what race this is? 5k, 10k, HM or longer? Exposure time and expected intensity can matter.

If you want more lower leg stuff, are longer socks available? Smartwool ski socks have worked very well for me at a rather wide range of temperatures. I use a loose fitting long sleeve that is fairly adaptable to different temps as well. Smartish tech material and sleeves are easy to roll up if I get a little warm.

I can do well in a lot of conditions, going sub-zero at times, but don't want to overwhelm with ideas. It helps to have an understanding of what makes one cold. On the bike, I know is wind blocking first. So materials have to cover all exposed areas and not let wind go through. Then build in insulation underneath. Fleece is terrible at blocking the wind, but great for insulation. When running, I know the wind blocking will likely cause me to overheat until it's really cold out. I need the air movement for better heat regulation.

Also, will you be ok being cold for the first 5 minutes or so? I'll warm up with extra stuff on, but peel off just long enough ahead of time to let the initial shock wear pass over. I might be a little cold the first 5 minutes, but be fine the rest of the time. Can you make through this ok, or does that trigger something? Wondering if it's something like what Yanti has been through in not being able to warm up for a very long time (forget the name).

rrrunner - 2013-05-13 9:27 PM Here she is! Home safe & sound after a short maiden voyage. I'm thinking Fiona, for the character in Burn Notice. I'd trust that chica with my 6 any day, and she's hawt.

Awesome!  Perfect name.  Fiona is totally hawt and so is your bike.
