Seattle | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by mcmanusclan5 Originally posted by Asalzwed Originally posted by mcmanusclan5 That was a justified rant. A day great and terrible here today. First thing this morning was the great part. My oldest was in a concert at the New England Conservatory and was astounding. Truly. Then I got home and snacked quickly then hopped on the drainer for my 2-3 hour ride. Stopped at an hour. Empty light came on… I almost never cut a workout short, but sometimes you have to (I just didn't want to today!). Worst part is that all this working out is getting in my head - so much time and so many other things to do (or not do). That ever get to anyone else? It's like I'm cramming other fun stuff in around a packed workout schedule for a race that's still 4.5 months away. Feels unbalanced at times... OK, soft rant over. Back to smiling and off to the pool in a bit. Matt Ah yeah, we all deal with this. I't important to try and keep the balance though. Hang in there and keep on smiling Thanks! I actually had a really good swim last night (for me - even doing multiple 800's!), so that helped. And I struck a blow for balance this morning and flew again for the first time in about 5 years. Don't want to let that currency ever slip again (and I feel way more human now for taking 2 hours on a rest day and doing something outside of tri). Balance, Grasshopper, balance… (showing my age with that reference) Thanks for the sentiment (and the undercurrent of HTFU - need to do that every now and again). Matt Heh heh there is CERTAINLY some HTFU undercurrent ... BUT I will say, when I speak of balance I am forkin' serious. And I mean the fun stuff, too. Even when you are competing at a very high level, I believe it's important to keep this all in perspective. Our paychecks aren't conditional on a top 10 performance at worlds or anything. So, when you have to bail early on a workout, or stay out late at a friends birthday party drinking champagne straight out of the bottle whilst cuttin' a rug even though you have 20 miles to run in the am (I uh- made that up   don't be too hard on yourself. This is supposed to be fun.
And nice work on the swim. 800s. In the pool. Eeeeeeeks. BAMF! |

Veteran 940 Citrus Heights, CA | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) The retail therapy was ok--couldn't find what I needed, but on the other hand, I did find a local reptile store that does a GREAT job caring for their animals--I appreciate that; its sad how many "reptile stores" keep their animals in completely wrong and dirty conditions. --And on a whim, I stopped by TJ Maxx--they often carry really good sports wear (i.e. UnderArmor, Nike, etc) at tiny little prices--I've gotten some compression wear there for under $15--ya gotta love that. Anyway, today I found some New Balance Trail Running shoes for $39--and I had a $25 gift card--yay! I will (hopefully) be able to try them out tomorrow. After shopping I cleaned up my workout (and music...and Clint's closet) room so I could possibly do some sort of training and workout in there again. Sadly, my WiiFit is in dire need of batteries and I didn't want to leave, so I had a great time punching the crap out of my heavy bag for awhile. It was a wonderful feeling hitting that bag--nothing makes you feel quite as strong and tough and powerful like hitting stuff! I then did some strength work...until Solo the cat decided HE needed attention RIGHT THEN. He's very pushy. I am feeling somewhat more even keeled now, though I know I have to deal with new crap tomorrow at work, I will simply muscle through it and just think of the training I will do after work. |

I'm here! sorry Manatees I fell off the edge of the world for a while but here I am. it's nearly 5 months since I broke my wrist and yesterday I finally did my first meaningful swim - an OWS race. Slower than last year but got that 1.6km done. My wrist ached after and during but all good. It is great to be back. I'm about to head out for a run with the dog. For those who don't know me. Jojo Baxas 49 married with one daughter who is 8. one dog Scooby Triathlon - not so much at the moment. Have done two OD one HIM and countless sprints. BUT I hate riding - loathe it. Last year was training for a HIM and a subsequent IM when I did a stationary clipped in topple in my driveway and busted my wrist pretty badly, thus followed surgery. This year is all about running - marathon in August, and swimming. Plans right now Swim camp on 21-23 Feb with BRENTON FORD from EFFORTLESS SWIMMING - Judi don't hate me too much.... I am renowned for pro triathlete stalking. Spent a week in Phuket with Macca last year....there's not many I've not met! WEIGHT a little above where I should be. i subscribe to the No Sugar No Grains (NSNG) and in fact do a lot of work for Vinnie Tortorich of the podcast America's Angriest Trainer. Also do a bit of work for Ben Greenfield. February 1 I'm going VEGAN for a month. WTF I'm supposed to eat who knows. so that's me! Hi Jo! I am a new member to this group and have heard much about you! (all good of course ). I see that you are a fellow NSNGer. My husband and I just started on that journey about 3.5-4 weeks ago. So far, so good. Just got past my "carb flu" about a week ago and am feeling much better energy wise than I was before I changed my eating habits. So cool that you do some work for Vinnie! My husband listens to his podcast occasionally and we are currently both in the process of reading his book, Fitness Confidential. Anyways, welcome back! Ashley |

Regular 980 Caerphilly, Wales, uk. | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Congratulations to all of you still sticking at the Jantastic challenge. Keep it up, it's a sterling effort. Nice to see you back out Yanti, you all ok now? As you can see from my Jantastic, and Janyne's end of week round up, I've got a few issues with shin splints. I've decided to take a hit on the Jantastic this week and log it at 60% for the week. Next week I'll probably use a joker to give me 50%. With luck, my shins will be rested for me to start up again in February. I'm still keeping myself busy with The Tour of Sufferlandria on Trainer Road, which is wasting my legs, but my shins are not effected by it at all For those who still haven't logged for this week, you have about 7 1/2 hours from the time stamp on this post to log your runs for last week. You may have noticed that you can now also adjust/commit to the amount of runs you are going to do for the next 4 week period. Also, how far the longest run is going to be in each of those weeks. If youve had a bad week, don't worry about it. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and jump back in. Kate, perhaps management has spotted something in the way you are passionate about your work and they are assessing how you go about your work the next few weeks. Just saying.... |

My immediate supervisor had hinted that the management was actually going to be dealing with him by way of watching his work while I was out of reptiles, but I have a case of "I'll believe it when I see it". Who knows-- either way, MY work will continue to be spot on--that's just the way I am, but I can't say that I'll be in the best of moods. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by mcmanusclan5 I'll start by saying that Salty, you is nuts! Awesome - yes - but crazy. I'm not going near that mileage… I'll be curious to hear how the high volume helps in the HM. I'm betting that the LSD is going to translate to a veeeeery fast HM. What are you targeting relative to past performances? Ben, from a miles standpoint in tri, were those numbers for an IM build or shorter distance? I'm looking at my numbers last year and forward as I roll up to a June HIM and I don't think I'll be much over 40 for many weeks. I'm also in the 12-15 or so hour a week, tops, so maybe that's a big part of it (I can't see your logs - which is cool - just saying why I'm asking a question that might be obvious otherwise). I know at the end of the HIM last summer, which I ran off a mostly Olympic distance plan, I had nothing left in the tank (dropped about 10-15 sec/mile the last 2, IIRC, and couldn't elevate my HR to threshold - legs just didn't have the power over the last ~2k). This year, I'm coming in with a bigger base and a full training cycle (~6months rather than 2.5) and hope to be able to both up the speed and hold it through the finish (and then collapse into the beer tent), but am wondering if my plan will have sufficient volume for the muscular endurance needed for that... Thanks! Matt Didn't really have any particular race in mind, but tried it out to see how it would help my running. Didn't really want to be on the trainer as much at the time, so took advantage of it. One issue is that I was having a trouble with running (or any activity) right at or over threshold. Adrienne is getting this in and I think both aspects together (the volume AND harder running sections) will work well to really build things up. Not sure why you can't see the logs as you're on the friends list. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: --- Originally posted by kgore Helloooooo Manatees! It finally feels like my ankle is getting better--there is a slight ache overall, but I have full range of motion without the stabbing pains...I am pretty sure I managed to sprain it when I was throwing the baseball with Clint last Sunday--I slipped near the fence boundary and managed to slip my ankle UNDERNEATH the chain link...and then proceeded to try to yank it back out. I was almost worried, as I couldn't get back under the fence; luckily Clint came over and moved it enough for me to have my leg back. Anyway, no pain then, but it did start aching a little the following day, and then on Tuesday, after still being a bit painful, I twisted it just enough getting into my truck, and then it was over---swelling, pain, you name it....pure awfulness. So much for getting some run training in before next Sunday's 10k. AND THEN...(Rant time)I have been REALLY angry since Saturday, as I was given a stern lecture at work that day...As most of the Manatees know, I work with a pretty useless coworker in my section of the zoo. He tends to not really care about his work, he doesn't clean the exhibits thoroughly, and will spend most every day complaining. Well on Friday, my supervisor came up to do venomous back up in the reptile house, and asked if we had been keeping up on the frog substrate changes (we're supposed to change out the substrate every 3 months on all amphibians); I said there were a few that needed to be done, and that I will do the exhibits when I weigh them usually (also quarterly). The 2 that weren't done were ones that I didn't weigh (he did, but neglected to change the substrate) and ones we don't weigh (too small). To be truthful, he had told me that he would do that one because he wanted to "improve" the exhibit. She said "so you have been the only one redoing exhibits?" I told her yes...she knows how he is, and understands my frustrations (for all the good that is!) , and she said she would be talking to our curator. So on Saturday, he calls me into the office and proceeds to tell me how disappointed he is that those two exhibits weren't done, and that we KNEW we needed to be on top of such things...I pointed out that I HAD been doing that and that my coworker had said HE wanted to do the one exhibit and he had weighed the other ones, but I would redo THAT one that day. At which point he told me that it was my fault for not telling my coworker to do those exhibits, and I need to make sure things get done....basically shame on me for not nagging my coworker to do his job. (He told me that we are equals in there, so I have the right to say things to him---even though I seem to be the only one held into high standards in the reptile area. ) I am so pi**ed about this--I already catch up our regular routine in there, I am doing ALL of the exhibit renovations, all of the training, and now I am expected to BABYSIT?!?! its f-ing ridiculous---Not to mention, but this coworker already is incredibly rude---if I make a mistake, he has no problem telling me how stupid I am--he will go out of his way to not do stuff just because he hates the management, and then of course, there is the constant yammering--one of those people who will talk about anything else to pass time (if you try to walk away he follows you---and if someone else is talking, he just talks louder)--I am not one to talk a lot while working, I need to focus. And oh yeah, the 'bright side'? I am not really working with him for at least a month as of next week, as they are training me in another area--so I am just in my "primary" (I say this with much sarcasm and bitterness) area for 6 days....NOT COOL--this means I have to catch up on all the routine crap he is NOT doing and all the projects they need me to do as well in that time. I will still be working my butt off like always, giving 110%--but I am really wondering why I do try so hard. Its like its never enough on my end, meanwhile he gets paid twice as much to b*tch and moan and not do crap. Okay, rant over. I think today calls for retail therapy---since I can't quite go out and run my problems away yet (stupid ankle!) Hm. You got any poisonous reptiles around? And he's careless, you say? |

Now there's an idea! Seconded! |

Hey now, I still finished the race AND beat Tony in the process!! I may have finished the race, but it certainly wasn't a good/fun/happy/sober/non-wanting-to-vomit-several-times kind of race, so I think I'll amend my race day time table somewhat so that the drinking starts AFTER the race. I think this is called learning? |
