Pro 4528 Norwalk, Connecticut | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Hi all, I am Rudy for those of you who don't know me. Rusty said i should come say hello, and i like Rusty, he is good peeps, so here i am. I have not been doing the BT thing much, just kinda got burned out on all the drama and such. So i have been easing my way back in, merely to see some old friends that i might not be in touch with on the interwebs social sites. I was in this group orignally with Fred when he was the main mentor, had a very depressing 2012 where i got injured and then went into a mental funk, which lasted until June of 2013. Nothing i really want to get into, but i needed a break. Now a days i am back training, i am gonna give the Patriot Half one more shot at sub 5 hours and the bike title. Have been close twice, so i hope third time is a charm. That is my main focus this year, with a couple sprints and an Oly mixed in. Right now i have been on the bike since December and am currently racing Criteriums, we had our second week of the local spring series yesterday and i got my first outside ride Saturday, after what even the most stringent New England Yankees would consider a winter that we will not wanna ever see again. My weight is always my issue, currently i am in the mid 2 teens, i am really gonna try for 190 for the June Half iron, it has been a tough winter or weight loss, as most of my work is high intensity shorter duration, which results in muscle gain and not as much fat loss. I am ok with that, as soon as i can get outside i will start with the longer slower fat burning sessions, i will probably melt 10-15 off quickly and the last 10-15 will be some stringent diet and work. Did a power test a few weeks ago, came in at 330.1 for 20 mins avg on a computrainer, which puts me off by 20w my all time best of about 350w, so the cycling is there. I had been running really well, and hurt my calf on a trail run....again....so i re-started my run training again a couple weeks ago, light intensity and short distance 5-6 days a week. i have not started swimming yet, honestly, it doesn't really concern me, i just need a good month/month and a half to swim an easy 35-36m 1.2 which is all i really need. The time it would take swimming to gain 5 mins i would rather spend biking or running, running where i will gain the most time. Goal for the race will be 35m 2m 2h15m 2m 2h, which if my math is correct 4:59, lol. I know i can run a 1h45, but, knowing my history with injuries while running, i will settle for a 2h half marathon. Thats my story and i am sticking to it. It is nice to see all my old friends and nice to meet some new ones. I will loiter around and read your posts as there are some great athletes in here, but you all seem to have a great group, so i will not intrude much past this post. Cheers!!! |

I noticed you were posting on Strava some more and was wondering if you would poke your nose back in here. Good to hear from you. Hi Arend, ya, i had been stealth for a while, then put it back on public, but instead of posting my trainer rides every day, i upload once a week on Strava. So it looks like i am riding once a week, but i have been on the bike about 4-5 times a week. I have not been logging my run miles, as i find myself fretting about distance and time. And since most are dreadmill miles anyway, i was fine with that. I am using Stava as my training log, merely because when i started to do multiple rides a day, it was one upload there and i had to do individual uploads here, so i stopped my log here. I think we still have the old mentor group there, no??? Thanks for the warm welcome it is appreciated. |

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Rudy - welcome (from a relatively new guy here)! Agreed on the winter - and I'm one of those Yankees (though a Sox fan through and through). Wish I was doing Patriot with you, but was sold out when I'd finalized the balance of the season… Maybe at one of the other NE races? Oh, and suh-weeeeeeet rides! Quick kid swim brag. Meghan swam Championships this weekend and took 2.3" off her 50 back and 2.9" (!) off her 50 free - and that was with an almost blown flip turn/weak push (won her heat, too). What was really cool, though, was that she "got it" about racing vs. just swimming fast. When she came off the wall poorly, she didn't want the other kids to beat her and cranked it up. THEN she realized that she is actually really fast when she won her heat - but that she needs to suffer a bit to do it. Now I think she wants to win (not to "not lose") - an important moment in the household... Still can't believe how fast those kids are (9-13). I'm going to keep swimming during their workouts, as I get schooled every time! Rest & Test week for me. What do y'all have on tap? Matt |

Very, very cool. Congrats to her! My nieces actually think running is cool. Although, the 5-year heckles me. She always asks, "Why didn't you win?"
I've got a week of steady volume. I'll be in Austin, TX for most of the week trying to get runs in before festivities start during the day. Then I ramp up for my peak before I taper down for the M. |

I've been unofficially stalking this group for more than a year...and I almost feel tht I know most of you...although, I have crossed paths with many in other places in BT. It is my opinion that this is THE strongest group in terms of experience and comraderie and I'd be happy to officially introduce myself. I will be forever indebted to Rusty for the terrific insight regarding IMLP from the IMLP training group thread. Many thanks to each of you for all you've each done for the BT community. I see it in the posts most every day. Giving back is a very good thing. Per Rusty's comments with the last 'new member'- "... post your bio here. Some of the things that are helpful to know are:" 1) what is your real first name? You will quickly note that this is not like other parts of the forum: this isn't an anonymous group. Dale Toce (MD,FACC; specifically cardiology-invasive, noninterventional; for those that aren't Fred) I added my name to my sig line a while back because I believe in accountability. 2) what is your triathlon story: race history, how/why you got into the sport or perhaps why you are just now diving in. This is year 3 for me-starting in 2011. I got injured running, year 10 of my running career, starting at age 40 and tore my calf-again. I began biking and then taught myself swimming before later joining a Master's swim group so that I could survive the IM that I wanted to sign up for. First race, IM70.3 Poconnos (3 months after beginning training)-swim cancelled, so technically it wasn't a tri. Second race=Rev3Quassy1/2IM (the next spring), Third race-IMLP (one month later) 3) Family status Married, 2 great kids-oldest, age 19 at Villanova-first year in Astrophysics (yeah, where'd that come from?) and youngest age 17-junior HS. 4) what does your current training look like? Weak, chaotic, less consistent than I'd like...'but I'm trying Ringo, I'm trying real hard (to be the shepard)' 5) what (if any) races did you do last season? 6 triathlon races in 2013-2 1/2IM (Quassy/Savageman), 2 Oly (Quassy-I did the double that weekend/Griskus), 2 sprints (Griskus, Lake T) 6) what are your planned races this season? Only the Rev3 Quassy 1/2IM is on the calander. 7) what are your goals for this year? Survive, no really, train like a triathlete-swim like a swimmer, bike like a cyclist and run like a runner (or with my dog- ha, stolen! ) 8) what will make you a good member of the group? I have a pretty good understanding of physiology and running in particuliar. |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Matt - that is really great about it clicking for Meghan in the race; most of us are still working on that I would imagine. I dream of taking that kind of time off in my 50.... I will be running a 5k with one of my neighbors kids this weekend: she's 10. My wife usually races with her but JT got outrun in the last race they did so I got pressed into service for this race. I am hoping I can keep up! Coach called me last night and changed stuff up a bit for today. Was supposed to be a recovery ride around the 'hood, but based on the weather (74 degrees!) and my ride this weekend he is instead sending me to the mountains - very excited about that. Haven't done any real climbing at all this year. Still a sort of easy recovery ride, but climbing, so you know how that goes. Safe training today everyone. |

Must be tough but a blast (and easier on the training schedule - one peak, one taper, two races - if not on the body). Matt Matt, they both weren't doubles. The Griskus Sprint is a few weeks apart from the Oly. The Rev3 Quassy races were back to back. It was called the 'full revolution' and we got rock star bike slots at the entrance of the transition area next to the pros. I raced the Olympic (my first Oly race ever in 2013) and then took it easy the next day as a long training day. It definitely sapped the energy a bit, but at a relaxed pace, it wasn't too bad. The run was a bit hot and challenging, though. Originally posted by Rudedog55 Hey Dale, great to see you again!!! Quassy 2012 ruined my year, lol Ben, always great seeing you!!! Good to see you too, Rudy. But what did you do with the real you? I remember a guy who believed triathlon was a cycling event with a wet warmup and a vertical cool down, sans wheels. I hope you are back to enjoying training and looking forward to racing again. Originally posted by BrotherTri Hey Dale, welcome!I see you have done Savageman. How did you like it? If you do decide to do Quassy, James, you are welcome to stay at my house. It is an hour drive, but it could alleive housing arrangements. Let me know... The Quassy hills were like a bunny slope compared to a black diamond ski trail of Savageman. At Quassy, it's a bit of a climb from mile 24-mile31, but not too bad at all. Ben has some experience in tearing up that course, as well as Rudy-who DID crush the bike course. Although the run may have broken him...I'm glad to see he is back at it. thanks again |
