piratenick - 2011-04-11 8:10 PM So does anyone think about what they're going to do after they finish?  I mean, we work so hard to get to the line (first-timers and vets alike) we gotta reward ourselves right?  I read about pros only eating fast food right after race finishes or AGers go out and get M-dot tattoos.  Does anyone think about that reward while you're training?  If so, what's your reward?

Yeah, so exactly two weeks after sending my e-mail to Ironman WTC asking what happened to the Lake Placid Countdown Clock I get this response this morning:

Hi-
Thank you for your E-mail and interest in Ironman.

I will share your concerns, opinions and suggestions with my colleagues. We always welcome feedback and take everything into consideration while planning future events.

Thank you and we hope to see you at an Ironman event soon!

Having once worked for an awesome small company that was then swallowed up by a larger corporation, this suprises me none.  The fall of Egypt, the Fall of Rome...  the Fall of America and the Global Mordern Society as a whole will be entirely due to the event of the Corporation. Corporatization of Business, Education, Medecine, Healthcare, Communicatyions, Financial Markets, Families, Friendships and yes... even sporting events professional and non-professional; such as WTC - IRONMAN, will be the undoing of all that is creative, genuine and real.  The problem with Corporatization is the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing and everything becomes an exercise in futility, and ambiguity and obscurity has suddenly become the accepted standards.  The WTC statistics will now record this e-mail as a satisfactory answer.  Sigh...

Well I just pumped out a fairly ridiculous Tuesday...2 bikes (still inside...bah) and a 4500m swim. Now I'm going to bed. It's 8.

I feel like that IM video that circulated awhile back. "I have to go to bed. I have to wake up tomorrow for a bike ride at 4." People are telling me I am a crazy idiot. Haha. Anyone else at this point?

Night!

Hey Rusty - I did Nations last year and agree with everything! Luckily I was in the first age group wave to start so I didn't get to see all of the crazy things people were doing on the bike course!

Gearing up for my first Olympic this weekend... supposed to be cool and rainy... and wishing I had a longsleeved wetsuit... and I'm getting nervous

And only 101 days to go until game time... Can't imagine how nervous I'll be a couple days before that! :-o

2) one loop of the bike course

3) Ben & Jerry's, big a$$ waffle cone

any guesses?

HAHAHA - That is awesome

hmm, that just kind of looks like my past couple of weekends

Answer:  all 3.  But you had your wife drive the bike course while eating the big a$$ cone and laughing about the last 11 miles :-P

Hi Jon.  Essentially that's what I did, trained for LP and then trained for a fall Marathon the end of August through October; only that wasn't my intentional plan, it was due to a Bike injury.  That's a great plan, too   I found for me (someone who was a Runner before they were a triathlete) that getting back to the Simplicity of Running was fantastic.  So much easier, less nerve-racking, and I was able to be more efficient with my training in general.  However, I did find that replacing some of my Recovery Runs with easy Trainer rides and Swims was very beneficial.  When we're HIM or Ironman training, whether we realize it or not, Cycling and Swimming is natural Recovery activites for Running because they are both non-impact (hopefully non-impact on the bike!) and promote circulation through fatigued and damaged muscles.

When HIM and Ironman training, I found in general my legs are a lot less sore than when I was primarily Marathon Training -- peaking at back-to-back 50-mile Running weeks.  So, for me, the amount of time not spent prepping for Tri Training was replaced with Recovery time during Marathon Training.  I had to spend a lot of time stretching, foam rolling, yoga, ice baths and running-specific strength training.  Keeing some Trainer rides and Swimming not only helped promote Recovery for running during my Marathon Training, it made it easier for me to re-transition back to full Triathlon Training a month after my Marathon.   I found kickboard drills in the Pool day after my Long Runs extremely benefical to promoting Recovery; although go EZ when pushing off the wall

Great advice! Even though this is a long ways off, I am starting to realize that training solely for a running race will actually be unknown territory for me. This will be the first time where I actually put down the bike and swim on purpose to concentrate on just the run. All training for the last 4 years has been an even balance of all three sports.

I will make sure to incorporate some easy riding and swimming.

That's what you get if you eat too many of them.

ARGH! I've been able to avoid those so far during IM training... but during pure marathon training they were a weekly event... sometimes more!

That is the truth, marathon training and ice baths go hand in hand.

I am kinda tapering this week for New Orleans.  I am feeling strong and good for the race so we shall see what happens.  I plan on really ramping up on the bike after my race this week to get ready for some hills.

Does anyone have any experince with LP course and 650 wheel cassettes sizes.  I know most folks ride 700 and alot of folks use compacts I am just thinking about staying with my standard crank and going with a 12-27.  For the record I am not the strongest hill rider so I will be working the hills hard in the next two months.

I did them almost weekly in the fall.  The only problem was that I was always rushed to get to work so I didn't get the time I needed to focus on recovery.

I remember doing a 17mile run on labor day and then having to work 13hrs after.  I'm not even sure an ice bath would have had any effect at that point.

I HATE, HATE, HATE ice baths...Weekly for me too when I was training for my marathon last fall. I find I am super sensitive to extreme cold/hot things on my skin (I can't hold coffee cups without a sleeve...I normally just pass it off to someone to carry for me for awhile). I finally got smart and came up with a solution for myself: I would run the water luke warm to about 1-2inches in depth and get in the tub and then turn off the hot and up the cold, then add the ice.

Maybe other people do this too...I don't know...but getting in a pre-poured/pre-iced ice bath is pure torture for me. Haha

In Clermont, FL for a tri training camp.  Looking forward to 4 days of nothing but S-B-R and some WARM outside riding.  It'll be nice to just go out and ride rather than bundling up to no end.

Race day question here: where is the best area to park on race day? I'm staying about 15 minutes away from Placid and will be driving in race morning with the crew. I know I won't be able to head home until after midnight, that's not an issue, I'm just wondering the best place for a vehicle on race day so it's away from all the action. Any suggestions? I know there is a gravel lot in back of the high school, beyond that I assume it's just finding a street spot off course? Does anyone know of a good spot?
