Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Muskrat37 - 2013-01-10 3:00 PM What I am about to write will sound like I am joking, but I assure you, I am not. It is however ok to laugh when you read it, because I'm laughing at myself. Today, I was going to swim, but I couldn't get it in because I had to go buy new jeans for a 2nd date tomorrow. I've lost 40 lbs since starting this journey, and my old jeans are anything but sexy. I wanted some jeans that will show off my ASSets. (this is where you can laugh at me) So, I'm running (if you want to call it that) at a VERY slow pace. I tell myself I'm going to do 3 easy miles. As I'm running, I'm already saying to myself, screw this - I NEED TO DO AT LEAST 4 MILES !!! Then the conflict in my head begins... should I turn at 3, or go to 4? I normally do 5 minimum, so either decision is a super hard decision. I run through the turn around for mile 3, then start feeling guilty, because I know I'm supposed to be going easy and short. so I turn around where I know that I will be short of 4 miles. THIS IS WHERE IT GETS CRAZY!!! I literally am 1/2 way through my turn and I'm really struggling to force myself to turn around. I start getting all this anxiety (and I don't ever get anxiety about anything) and I'm stressing out. You see, I have this thing about setting goals and completing them, and since I decided I was going to go 4 miles, I felt I was cheating myself. But the guilt from running more than the original planned 3 miles was killing me. I force myself to complete the turn, and for the rest of the run, I can't stop thinking about that stupid 2 tenths of a mile that I "cheated" myself out of! I was feeling emotional about it. I tried to laugh it off on the surface but I swear, inside, I was dying. So Salty - Please, Please remind / tell me why it's good that we run slow and easy? What are the benefits of running slow? I easily could have ran 8 min miles and not been very sore - and I easily could have ran 6 full miles, maybe more. Instead, I literally forced myself to run 3.82 miles in 37:24 for a 9:34 pace and it was the hardest run I have ever done. It was hard to force myself to run that slow and harder to stop short of 4 miles. FYI - This week I ran Sunday - 5.6 miles (8:10 pace), Monday 10.1 miles (8:13 pace), Tuesday 5.3 miles (8:36 pace) then today 3.8 miles (9:34 pace). Also - this story, and your answer are going on my blog. My issue would be round numbers. I cannot do 6.3km I have to do 6.5 or 6. No way. I run an out and back on the weekends - up to 20km right now. So I run for 10km then run back home, I look at the tracker on my phone app and is says I've done 19.4km so there we go, 600m running around the block. Infuriating but I cannot let that go. |

So if I'm doing 100's I count to 2 rather than four. It also isn't so soul destroying. |

![]() | ![]() Chad, what was the purpose of your workout? Was it recovery? Did your run long yesterday? Why slow and short? Answer those questions first. My initial feedback without any of those answers is that there isn't much variety in your pacing. For reference, my recovery pace can creep Into the 10:00 min mile pace and my speed can get down close to 5:10 minute mile pace. Talk about a wide range. Also, it's generally short and fast, long and slow. The idea isn't JUST slower, it's also progressively adding volume. There are many parts to this equation. I can't keep preaching long and slow though. You either have to trust me (as well as LOTS of other coaches and physio experts) and give it some time and patience or just do it your own way. Why don't you read Jack Daniels running formula, Pfitzer's or Higdon's book? |

It's the only way unlessyou have a lap counter or something similar. I figure though once I get up past 1km I'm doing well anyway to keep swimming, who really cares about the distance. I'm pretty sure I put in some extra laps here and there because i think I've done less than I have! It's all distance in the bank. |

Do you do freestyle the whole time, or do you mix up strokes when everyone else does? It doesn't seem to me that there's much benefit in swimming the other strokes with triathlon as the end goal. I largely do freestyle and backstroke with my masters swim. I occasionally mutilate the breast stroke just to work a couple of different muscles. |

Why don't you read Jack Daniels running formula, Pfitzer's or Higdon's book? Ugh - I have so much to learn! I understand long & slow runs..but for some reason I was thinking shorter, slower runs. LMAO. Only purpose the run was to add miles for the week. I was thinking of your advice to "mix up my mileage" and I was also thinking about the "slower runs" being good. I am building up my runs - "marathon training" but don't have a specific plan other than not worrying about speedwork, and building my miles, but not more than 10% per week. I typically run around 8:00 to 8:15. This pace is relatively easy for me. Sub 8:00 and I start pushing it. It appears my race pace for up to a 1/2 is 7:30ish... Based on that - can you give me an idea of what I should be doing? I will run 7 days a week..no problem. Would at least like 6 days minimum. Current long run (@ 8:15 pace) is at 10 - 13 miles. (35 miles per week) I never run less than 5 miles. I am wanting to run the Yakima River Canyon Marathon on 4/6/12. Can you help me understand what I should do to get there? I really appreciate anything you can tell me. I will check out those books. Sorry if some of these questions are "dumb"...I just don't get run training. Right now I'm focused on building my weekly mileage to 45 - 50 miles. Edited by Muskrat37 2013-01-10 12:06 AM |

If it's not Fiber One I stick to some pretty strict rules: less than 5 grams of sugar, at least 3 grams of fiber and at least 3 grams of protein. I know, totally boring. I usually do half Fiber One and half Kashi Go Lean. It has to have fiber, etc. or I am hungry at by 10:00. |
