Champion 14677 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by melbo55 Originally posted by fortissimo So a week ago today my husband was walking out of his classroom with his phone in at his ear while I was about to walk into my room. The look on his face was the look something bad happened. His brother was on the phone to let us know that his son had been killed in a plane crash at Embry-Riddle. Zach was on his final test flight before graduation next month. Shortly after take-off, one of the wings of the plane fell off and the plane crashed, killing Zach and the FAA examiner on board instantly. To give us another punch in the stomach, our 11-year-old Golden, Jack, was at the vet getting his teeth cleaned. About an hour or so of finding out about Zach, the vet called to tell us Jack has cancer. It's a Mast cell cancer, not osteosarcoma like Dug has. DH takes Jack to the oncologist on Monday to find out what we can do for Jack. He is in no pain that we can tell, but he is the most hyper 11 year-old puppy in the world so it's hard to see what he really feels. The past week has been very chaotic. We're actually all doing better because we know Zach was doing what he loved. We were told that when the wing fell off the G forces probably caused the two to become unconscious immediately so they have no idea what happened. I feel so bad for the FAA examiner's family - he leaves a wife with two young boys under the age of 4. I also worry about my brother-in-law, Zach's father. He is still planning on doing IM Boulder in June. However, even before the accident his training has been interrupted by travel for work and illness. I hope he can race, because that's what Zach would have wanted, but we don't want him to race for the wrong reasons, if that makes sense. Thank you to all who have reached out the past week. I feel your thoughts, prayers, and strength. It means a lot. Robin, I have no words for this awful news. Wishing peace for you and your husband and his family and wishing for hopeful news for Jack. (((big, comforting hugs))) echoing what all have said. {{{WARMMELONPRESSES]]] |

Member 836 North Augusta, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Grateful for a variety of things: 1. It's the weekend and I already did my long run of the week. 2. Completed my first ever cycling FTP test and it wasn't as awful as I thought (well, except when I got a bit cocky in the 3rd set and went up a gear which equated to an additional 25 watts--that lasted about 90 seconds before I bailed to the easier gear). 3. There are only 28.5 more student days of the school year left. Come on summer vacation! |

Member 285 Cypress, Texas | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Well no race for me. The thunderstorms that were supposed to come in between 1 and 5 am came a little later and lasted a lot longer than expected. They cancelled the race. Bummer. Next one on the list is in June. |

So disappointing when the weather causes a cancellation. This is particularly difficult after months of training. Sorry. |

Sorry you didn't get to race. First, thanks everyone again for the thoughts and prayers. It means a lot. Second, despite temps in the 20s with winds in the 30mph range and gusts in the 40s and 50s, we raced because we needed it and wanted normal. It was so cold! About mile 1.5 we had to run through an underpass and there was about 4" of water. Our feet got soaked and after that my feet were so frozen and felt like I had cement shoes on. First 3.1 miles were uphill. As I neared the turnaround, I started hearing people complain about the wind. I asked myself, "what wind?" Then I hit the turnaround and it was all wind, all the time for 3.1 freezing miles. I had snotcicles frozen on my face! I wanted a sub-60 but went 1:05.43. Not very fast and disappointing, BUT! I won my AG by 8 minutes. I find it pretty hilarious because I'm so not a runner. DH is a bit bummed because he only beat me by 30 seconds or so. If he hadn't made me walk at the beginning because the uneven terrain was not limb friendly, which was also the end of the race, I would have chicked him! |
