Time for WWTD:

Garmin 305 or hard-side bike case?

I'll get more use out of the 305 over the course of the summer, but I will need to buy a bike case before I travel to Maryland in August.

Do I buy the bike case now and continue to live without the 305, or buy the 305 and figure on buying the bike case later in the summer?

OK - I need more info.

When is the trip to Maryland?

I assume you are flying, is that correct?

Will Maryland be your only trip with the bike this year?

Are you going to Maryland for a race, to visit someone you know, or for both?

The trip to Maryland is in early August and is the final century ride of my IMKY training which I'm going to ride as a celebration with my coach.

It's the only trip on my schedule so far but, if I have the bike case, I can take my bike with me when I have to travel for work. So far, all of the other trips that I have planned (long rides and training camps) are drivable distance for me and I can put the bike in the back of the car.

IMO, right now bike cases are the money pit.  I would closely watch what airlines are doing because we are going to get (more) screwed as time goes on.

If you can wait until beyond August, I am highly considering purchasing the Sunlite case that JeepFleeb talks about.  Apparently he has gotten through the airport without getting dinged a few times.  If I can do the same, I would buy that one instead of a hard case.

Ok - here's the thing - especially in light of the most recent announcement from AA (that's American Airlines, Ryan.  I don't want you to think you missed a meeting).  Not only are you going to pay for the case (there are some really good deals out there right now, but they have been out there for a while, I assume because less people are buying them) you are going to pay a butt load in extra fees from the airline.  Unless you are a really smooth talker, you are going to pay that fee both ways.  So, you spend at least 2-250 on the case, and then another $125 on the baggabe fee (because it is "oversized), and by the time all is said and done, one trip costs you around $400 or more to move the bike.  YIKES!!

If you buy a bike shipping box ($60) and ship is FedEx, you pay about $40 (each way), so you are looking at $140.  Many bike shops will do all of the work for you for less - and ship it to a sister store which will put it back together for you and tune it.

I am facing the same issue for when I go to Pittsbugh, except that I am flying, but my equipment will be on a team bus.  So, I have to package my bike so that it rides well on the bus.

I would buy the 305 and see if you can get it shipped for a lot less - or you have the option of renting one - just to see if you like it - then you can make a more informed decision.

It looks just like a piece of luggage. I think I have seen it as cheap as $167. I am likely buying it after I pay off my gas debt from my trip this next week.

Edit:  Amazon has it for $146

No, but apparently the proper people were notified and we're just to forget about it.

What up beetches!?

I ran last night. Felt good. I was trying to get 7 miles in 52 minutes. No go. It took me 59 seconds longer. Frickin' frack! Yeah. Not much pace booty out last night, surprisingly. Tonight there'll be talent galore at the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge -- a 3.5-mile snoozefest. I might do it twice just to pi&& off my coworkers. I'd do it three times to really irk them but I have the half mary on Sunday and still wanna pitch tomorrow night.

One thing I just realized is that you guys are referencing the soft-sided bike case.  I would get the hard-sided suitcase.  I just wouldn't want to trust a carbon bike a soft-case in the hands of a baggage handler.

I didn't know about the Sunlite case. I like that.

It looks just like a piece of luggage. I think I have seen it as cheap as $167. I am likely buying it after I pay off my gas debt from my trip this next week.

I just found this one for $145. Of course shipping is probably a bundle.

One thing I just realized is that you guys are referencing the soft-sided bike case. I would get the hard-sided suitcase. I just wouldn't want to trust a carbon bike a soft-case in the hands of a baggage handler.

I pm'd Aaron about the durability of it and the stress it puts on the bike.  He said it has plenty of protection.  Before I order it, I am going to call Sunlite and talk to them.  That is my biggest concern too.

Yawn.

Happy Thirsty Thursday! Dollar beverages at the baseball game tonight. I say that, but I probably won't drink at all. What's wrong with me?
